AKS – Parity (Video)

Categories: Hip-Hop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“”AKS” via his new Hip-Hop release, successfully gives us a taste of his own reality and view about life. Track with cozy, steady flow, plenty of synth samples and some guitar vibrations. The lyrics are of deep meaning and also clear enough to follow them up. Quite valuable result, ideal for selective ears.”

-Nagamag.com

Following the release of his last single, the soulful and aspirational ‘Up & Up (Heavens Above)’, which was supported by the likes of Capital Xtra, KISS FM, Amazing Radio, No Signal, Wordplay Magazine and GUAP Magazine, among others, British rap artist and producer AKS aka the “three letter man” is back with an introspective and deeply personal new single titled ‘PARITY’, as he continues to tease towards his long-awaited third EP As Plane As Day: Departures & Arrivals, which will conclude the South London wordsmith’s long-running ‘Modes of Transport’ EP series.

Produced by AKS himself, under the veiled moniker #3Letters, with live instrumentation from guitarist Adrian Remedy (Ed Sheeran), bass player Benjamin Muralt (Ledisi, Ill Camille, Pixie Lott) and keyboardist Charlie Stacey (Yussef Dayes), ‘Parity’ is a rich and textured rap track, layered with lush synth keys, glorious melodies and vibrant guitar licks, over which AKS wears his heart on his sleeves in truly captivating fashion. Switching up his rap flow into a bouncy melodic quickfire rhyme iteration that captures your attention, AKS speaks honestly to the pressures and aspirations of a black father.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Parity’, AKS says, “the song is about purpose really. The notion that we do the best we can for our kids so that their starting point in life is beyond where ours was. I’m sure that was also our parent’s aim, and in that from generation to generation, there’s a sense of commonality in that. Parity. I wanted to explore generational differences – both the things that separate us from the generations that came before us, and those points of commonality that unite us. Like, wanting the best for your kids is universal right?”

Unpacking the record further, AKS adds that ‘Parity’ was “born out of conversations I was having with other parents about the hopes and dreams that they had for their kids and the struggles they had with their own parents. More and more, I realised that many of the choices that we’re making as parents are the same choices that our own parents were faced with, and try as we might to step with our best foot forward and usher in a world that we’d be happy for our children to inherit, some of those aspirations don’t come to fruition. We’re all learning on the job. Still, we pour out our best for them”.

Heralded as one of the finest lyricists in the UK by the likes of Hypebeast and Okayplayer, with co-signs from Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Jay-Z collaborator Young Guru, AKS has always had a real sense of palpable excitement around his music from fans and critics alike. While his last EP Train Of Thought earned him two nominations at the inaugural Unsigned Music Awards, and his last single ‘Up & Up’ was championed by DJ Semtex at Capital Xtra and KISS FM’s Ellie Prohan, the South London native is excited for what’s to come as he gears up to close out his ‘Mode Of Transport’ series in 2022.

His name was created as a form of reinventing the negative term as it has been used oppressively throughout history toward brown bodies and their culture. VIB – Light At Midnight (Video)

Categories: Hip-Hop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , |

“A powerful message delivered with the crispness of a cold night. We dig the chorus and the clarity of the production. Human struggles never sounded so good. Lyrically engaging and simple in a classic hip hop way. ”

-Nagamag.com

Emerging UK rapper VIB has unveiled his riveting debut single, “Light At Midnight”. Making an impactful entrance with a slice of immersive, thought-provoking hip-hop, the talented rapper proves he’s someone to pay close attention to.

Despite this being his first release, he’s been a musician almost his entire life – playing the drums and guitar, as well as singing, since a young age. Along with his evident musical talents, he is also a documented philanthropist with his own charity, Vib Save Children, which he founded in 2013 at just 11 years old. The charity helps to save and change the lives of less privileged children by helping them access education and various resources needed in order to have a greater quality of life.

The now 19-year-old is also a published author with two anthologies of poetry under his belt – with all proceeds going to his charity. Aside from all of this, he’s currently a second-year medical student, again inspired by his deep desire to help change and save lives. “Light At Midnight” follows this same ethos and speaks on VIB’s life experiences and the injustices in the world that he is so passionate about changing and making a difference with. Highlighting his impressive lyrical ability and hard-hitting rap flow, the gripping track evokes emotion throughout, with the gifted rapper making sure listeners feel his passion behind every single word.

Elaborating further, VIB says, “I wrote ‘Light At Midnight’ to try and encapsulate my life experiences and highlight how it has changed me as a person and the way I view life, people and the world. The song is meant to symbolise that life comes with struggle, hurt and intentional segregation; but if we were all to lead with compassion and love in life, there is always light in the darkness. It’s a story of my life and what I want to change in the world. The music video symbolises the frustration in my mind and how it feels being stuck in a dark place. The injustices and things that are wrong in the world keep me up at night and have me thinking constantly about how I can change things.”

Clearly gifted with many different talents, VIB is a bright light in a world that can often be dark and uncertain, and “Light At Midnight” marks the start of his exciting new chapter. Driven by a passion to make a difference, VIB is a much-welcomed addition to the hip-hop scene and will surely be one to watch over the next year as he reveals more new music.

Karras – Delusional (Jack Lim Mix) (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Hip-Hop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , |

“We kicking it with those classic piano riffs and good vibes. Hip Hop is a frame of mind, and this track proves that. Classic sounds with a few modern twists. Put the top down and lets cruse this smooth creation. ”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with Nagamag few words about his project and this song:

"Hip-hop was the music that I first fell in love with of my own accord when I was seven. By the time I was of an age to start playing in bands though, punk was what I was surrounded by and so that’s what I churned out. For over a decade I played in countless punk and metal bands. However, when my last band broke up, I decided I needed to make music on my own terms without relying too heavily on others. Still needing a musical outlet, I felt magnetized back to what had lit the pilot light of my drive for music two decades prior. There were definitely people who thought even the idea of me rapping was laughable. It got to me a bit but I didn’t let it stop me. Many late nights, churning up nothing but subpar lyrics and flows, I would feel defeated and an imposter. I’d listen to the rappers I loved and admired and feel foolish even trying to make music in the same genre. Several times I told myself I was done. It wasn’t worth all the failure and discouragement. For some reason though I couldn’t quit. I’d always pick it back up and try again. With a handful of years of practice and study I eventually I went from terrible to not half bad. I’m not under any illusion that I can currently compete with the majority of established underground rappers, but what I do know is, is that I keep getting better and making bigger strides. I’m finding more people who dig what I’m doing and want to support it. And I’ve learned that I can handle the continual feeling of defeat in order to pursue the passion that I cannot seem to shuck. I think it takes a small does of delusion to keep at it. I’m okay with that.

This song was a particular challenge for the producers who made the various versions. I recorded my vocals to a J Dilla track that fit the mood perfectly. Dilla being well-known for the “drunken drummer” approach, made the tempo difficult for a producer to successfully recreate. I wanted these producers to build an original and unique beat around my already recorded vocals and reverse engineer me a track that not only matched my vocal melodies but also my exact rhythm. I didn’t want them scooting my takes much or having to pitch correct to fit their melodic chord progression. Many talented producers gave it a shot and a few of them came through with some damn great beats. This version by Jack Lim is a whole different take than I would have expected stylistically and I wound up loving it. I think he brought a nice pop bounce to it that I've yet to establish in my catalog."
