Just ahead of Piano Day tomorrow, pianist/composer Vanessa Wagner celebrates the release of her new album Study Of The Invisible on InFiné with her stunning take on Philip Glass’s “Etude N°16” — a tense, and determined vision of the piece.

The album sees her breaking new ground in a repertoire that she is, in France and even in Europe, practically the only “classical” pianist to tackle – a contemporary and timeless repertoire that can be described as “minimalist”, but which in reality covers a multitude of singular universes and musical personalities that are often out of the ordinary, all generations combined. Bryce Dessner, Caroline Shaw, Harold Budd, Brian & Roger Eno, Nico Muhly, Timo Andres, and more, are all here.

"Six was written in memory of Tyler Kulp - a friend of ours who passed away suddenly while we were studying at IUP. Tyler was a talented multi instrumentalist well known in the percussion community for his impressive ability to play the marimba with 6 and sometimes even 8 mallets. A pulsing vibraphone rhythm is set up on an Fmaj7 chord using 6 notes. Soon after, chord tones are bowed up high on the same instrument. Electric guitar played with an eBow enters later, doubling the bowed vibraphone tones. Synthesized mellotron-type pads fill in and blend with an overdubbed electric guitar, both soaked in modulation and wet effects. A sawtooth wave sub-bass synth carries the low end. This song is about the endurance of love over time. It is a lullaby that is dedicated to all our loved ones, who are always in our hearts, including our animal friends. I had the great pleasure of working with one of my favorite singers, Kimberly Knighton, who performs the vocals here. The song itself goes back to an early melody I had written years ago, with more recently revised lyrics. I recorded the song at June Audio in Provo, Utah. The film was shot by videographer Nick Sales, who also provided the cinematography. I am thrilled to share this with you all. I hope it brings to mind your loved ones, including those who are with us today as well as those who have passed but will remain in our hearts forever.
