Jimkata – Hard Headed (Video)

Categories: Rock, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , |

“High-end and high quality vocal arrangement, undoubtedly go into a plus track such as -Hard Headed-. It creates a special effect of nostalgia, important for each of us, where the last echoes predict that the best days are still ahead.”

“Лидирующий вокал и качественная аранжировка несомненно идут в плюс треку -Hard Headed-. Создаётся особый эффект ностальгии по важным для каждого из нас временам, где отголоски эха прошлого предвещают, что самые лучшие дни ещё впереди.”

-Nagamag.com

New electro-rock trio Jimkata’s latest single “Hard Headed”. The song, which explores themes such as perseverance in the face of adversity, strength, and how sometimes being too stubborn to give up is a good thing, was inspired when the band’s lead singer Even Friedell learned more about soldiers who were drafted away from their loved ones to fight in the Vietnam War. This deeply resonated with him, and after such a challenging year for everyone, Evan states “we’ve all had to make tough choices, have faith and find inner strength to make it through this.”

The song features deep soulful vocals that effortlessly flow over courageous melody backed by their signature analog synths to create a flawless groove.

The visuals were created by lighting designer and visual artist, Greg Ellis and feature the band performing in an analog video giving off a psychedelic 70s retro vibe. The single and accompanying visuals are off of their album Bonfires, set for release this summer.

Jimkata are a three-piece anthemic, synth-washed, electro-rock band based out of Ithaca. With a triumph of swirling analog synths, infectious pop hooks and candid lyrics, Jimkata have built a distinct sound which has been resonating with listeners across the country.

Friends since middle school, Evan Friedell, Aaron Gorsch and Packy Lunn infuse Jimkata, (named after the so-bad-it’s-good 1985 gym-fu caper Gymkata) with both an adventurous musical streak and relatable lyrical themes. Mixed in with the modern synth sensibilities and hard driven indie rock are influences drawn from the likes of Motown, singer-songwriters like James Taylor and even old country songs, where storytelling and a quick turn of phrase share priorities with melody and the beat. Jimkata have concocted an unusually rich and rewarding mix and one that’s evolved naturally.

After taking a two and a half year hiatus following the release of six studio albums and the successful building of a vibrant, grassroots fanbase, Jimkata are preparing to release their next album, Bonfires. The 10 track album is set for release as a series of singles every month with an accompanying visuals and merch line. Thematically, Bonfires touches on poignant themes of uncertainty, being in limbo, and looking for an anchor of hope in these trying times.

Bonfires is set for release summer 2021 worldwide.

No Signal – P S D (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“"No Signal" created something more than impressive for us. Epic sound with all the meaning of the word. Starting with a soft and etherial touch, "PSD" gradually raises its level of power with vocals that make you hold your breath! ”

-Nagamag.com

A portal into the No Signal world is through a highly conceptual, darkly theatrical, and genre-defying music. Once you enter this captivating universe of sound you’re granted access to a realm of thought-provoking concepts, thrilling narratives, mesmerizing visuals rife with symbolism, and captivating videos. No Signal’s upcoming single “P S D” out January 21, 2021, features a chilling vocal masterpiece that conjures themes from previous releases, as if to mark an end to this era of No Signal, and the spawning of anew.

“No Signal should be an immersive experience with stories and concepts. It’s way more than just the music. My goal is to create a realm of art that truly accentuates just how far you can go with it, and to bring back intelligent music, and make people feel things they haven’t felt before, something words can’t be put to” shares the Boulder, Colorado-based artist. “I take this work very seriously.”

https://www.facebook.com/No-Signal-996061243922398/

No Signal officially released its first EP in February 2018, and, in two years, has released two singles, an EP and a full-length debut album. Riley writes and sings every lyric, every piece of music, and plays every instrument on his recordings. He also storyboards each release, sometimes writing many pages to flesh out his ideas, and he currently has the next 6 albums mapped out. It’s a prolific and weighty outpouring of music from an 18 year old.

Between albums, No Signal releases standalone EPs which are a respite from the LP mindset. These are experimental in music and concept, and they are often independent of No Signal’s established thematic territory.

It’s hard to pin down an epiphany that led a 14-year-old boy to set out to explore the grand artistic statements that permeate No Signal. The facts are that Riley grew up in a musical household, but never took music seriously until he was 14. At that time, a flood devastated his family’s house, warping all the guitars his father owned. Riley and his father went through the lengthy process of restoring each guitar and on that last remaining instrument, Riley began exploring music, and, from there, he began to organically branch out and taught himself to play other instruments.

At first, his tastes encompassed the pop music of the day, but hearing aggressively emotive music shifted his perspective. Discovering Tool was epiphanic for Riley as it showed him music could be a fluid form of creativity. Tool also showed him the power of narratives and symbolism as part of a music package. Soon after his Tool transformation, Riley set out on a journey to establish his own world of creativity. He soon realized that communicating his vision to others was almost futile. So, he began a solitary artistic pursuit as No Signal.

“P S D” is an eerily ethereal track which features melodically foreboding keyboards, thrilling vocals, and an imaginative ambient arrangement. The songs opening conjures calming yet captivating keyboards and ambience which weave appropriately into the falsetto vocals that Riley had yet to present until this very track. Although “P S D” is a far departure from his hard hitting songs like Idée Fixe and The Hunger, Riley always manages to weave his signature style on every one of his songs that to make it distinctly “No Signal”

“Are you about to listen something to activate yourself, or just relax? Surprisingly you can achieve both with just a single track! The House mix that calls you to the dancefloor, but the lyrics are so calm and smooth... Concentrate on the beat for an energy boost, or let the singing soothe your body.”

-Nagamag.com

Desire (Villanova Mix) is a laid-back house mix, that creates a relaxed mood but is danceable. I worked on this mix alongside an incredibly talented producer/DJ Hugo Villanova. I wrote the track as a fun tribute to the soul singer Sade and wanted to create a modern timeless feel that is simply feel good, so I knew Hugo was the one to work with. Overall, the song has a weekend sunset feel, slightly tropical and most of all just makes the listener feel good.

OYLS – Netflix (Your Product is Too Good) (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , , |

“What do you usually expect from a new release? “OYLS” have not only made a nice song, but also an interesting clip to watch. Based on its electronic sound style and funny lyrics, it can truly attract everyone’s interest.”

-Nagamag.com

LA based electronic duo OYLS are releasing the music video for their song “Netflix (Your Product Is Too Good)” directed by Nicole Lipp. Both the third single off their most recent album OYLS (For Your Consideration), as well as the third episode in a series of seamless videos dubbed as a visual ‘Pop Opera,’ the video stars legendary actor and Los Angeles local Danny Trejo (Machete, Spy Kids) in a very humanizing role: a lost soul binging Netflix late at night in a motel – with snacks, naturally.

With the hopes to destigmatize mental illness, the band shares, “The song is really about how we cope with our negative feelings, whether they stem from the stress of our daily lives, mental illness, or uncertainty about the world.” OYLS explains, “To have someone of Danny’s stature willing to portray a vulnerable character struggling with his own mind is invaluable to normalizing our conversations about mental health. It really is a huge honor to have him involved.”

“Netflix (Your Product Is Too Good)” takes a minimalistic stance sonically, crafted with an array of electronic warmth. With pulsing, throbbing synths, punctual pronunciation, rich in character and snappy tones softened by the echoing flares, the catchy hook and lyrics are dusted in a lighthearted gleam while holding a colder, more relatable theme. The song has moments of robotic, electro style harmonies adding a haunting effect and samples that add a witty sound but a harsh message, replicating that inner voice we all know.

Reflecting the addiction to the easily supplied, numb living of the modern world, the video shows Danny Trejo unknowingly glued to his screen with an endless supply of munchies, binging his life away. OYLS share, “We explore some of the conflicted relationships we have with pervasive technology and late-stage capitalism. Unlimited content at our fingertips is both a remarkable tool and a powerfully addictive escape.”

Prior to the release of OYLS (For Your Consideration), the duo sold space on their album cover for anyone to purchase, with proceeds going to MusiCares, a non-profit that assists musicians struggling with mental illness. Proceeds from this music video will also go to MusiCares and they have made it possible to donate directly to the cause through their Spotify page.

“We hope to impact the discourse surrounding mental illness. It’s such a stigmatized topic but so many sufler on a daily basis that it really shouldn’t be. Hopefully we can help make that change.”

“Netflix (Your Product Is Too Good)” will be followed by five more episodes slated for later this year, released via Handwritten Records.
