2020. The world suddenly stands still. EGOPUSHER has to interrupt their «Beyond» tour. From the band bus back to the rehearsal room. Time to record the ambient album that has been floating in the back of their minds for a long time.

The Ambient Mix Tape is based on Tobias Preisig's and Alessandro Giannelli's wish to present their otherwise energetic sound in a calmer way. It comprises seven tracks, characterized by synthesizer sounds, impressive basses and intimate violin parts. Each piece has its place. What unites them is this comforting sound, which the duo recorded and produced on their own. Honest and direct.

Imitation, the incredibly fine and subtle opener, is an ideal introduction to this album. Inevitably, the gaze moves into the distance until the warm and powerful basses bring the listener back down to earth. In Sentinel, massive walls of sound build up between an organic hi-hat and an electronic bass drum. These walls open up effortlessly at the end. Finally, we return to the big screen with Vacuum. An appealing mix of 60s French cinema, Francis Lai and neoclassical coolness. The club and the stroboscopic lights take a break. But even in small and cramped rehearsal rooms their is enough space for sounds of epic proportions.

Preisig and Giannelli skillfully keep developing their unique and self-sufficient world of sound. This is their space. And it fills up again and again without ever being overloaded. The spherical dimension and omnipresent closeness to sound, that the duo creates at the same time are extraordinary. The careful mix by Berlin ambient piano artist Jan Wagner underlines this achievement impressively. The Ambient Mix Tape is a timeless result of a short epoch that makes the EGOPUSHER cosmos grow.

Edward Newell x Esgazette – Treasury of Reverie and Memory (Spotify)

“Our favourite Cinematic sound, this time decorated with sweet piano keys is offered with great artistry. Peaceful, balanced and elegant track, like a blooming flower in the morning dawn. The treasure of your sound collection has the seal of Edward Newell.”

-Nagamag.com

Edward Newell was born in 1961 and grew up in a country village near to London as part of a large musical family. His early training was mostly in classical music, his father being an adept multi-instrumentalist. Edward played cello from a young age before taking up guitar during his school years when he joined a rock band. He subsequently played electric bass, double-bass and keyboards while first encountering electronics and studio recording. Recently he began composing music that develops from improvisations on piano or cello. His first solo release consists of chamber pieces built from a few tracks; they are largely acoustic but feature samplers and studio effects. His atmospheric music explores many moods utilising both the textural and melodic.

The studio-based project that is Esgazette began in London in 1981 as a post-punk jamming band. Subsequently working out of Wales and Scotland, Esgazette has passed through several incarnations with founder Will Datson as principal creator collaborating with guest vocalists and players.

Such flexibility of movement is a reflection of Esgazette’s pioneering use of what Will calls ‘the suitcase studio’, which has followed the progress of home recording from cassette and portable reel-to-reel to computer multitrack.

Esgazette could be seen as exemplifying ‘indie’ music, meaning working truly independently of the established music business, since before the tag existed. Esgazette has always stood for spontaneity and experimentation in everything from instrumentation and recording techniques to cover art and video. If, in the past, this has set limitations with regard to technical sophistication and flag-waving publicity, it has allowed for creative and productive freedom.

While Esgazette’s output suggests a host of influences - from German experimental rock of the 70s, 80s synth pop, to more recent sampling and electronica - it is never bound by generic conventions. The songs can be existential, angsty, lyrical or downright theatrical, yet each manages to suggest a distinctive imaginative scenario. In a similar way the instrumentals trigger a range of moods hinting at TV mystery themes, meditative soundscapes and unsettling soundtracks for yet to be made movies.

From Dark EP. Listen it herE: https://open.spotify.com/album/2JWpWUnz9YNsERs3macgZv

Virginia-based, French composer Nicolas Laget releases his captivating new EP, ‘Dark’, out now on all streaming platforms.

Inspired by the likes of Johann Johannson, Max Richter, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds, Nicolas draws from his combined influences to create his own unique brand of Neo-Classical compositions. Fusing modern classical with electronic beats, Nicolas thrives on being able to experiment with his music and the concepts and emotions he’s able to portray.

Speaking of the EP, Nicolas says, “This is a collection of pieces created over many years. Some were created for films, some are pure musical pursuits. They are tied together by their emotional content. This music explores various states of discomfort, disorientation, angst, oppression, sadness, and tragedy.”

The EP’s opening track ‘Threat and Sanctuary’ laments humanity’s inability to respect and protect the natural habitats of millions of species. Last Night is the bittersweet farewell of a loving wife faced with a terminal disease while ‘Payback!’ and ‘Time Thied’ are from the soundtrack to “Dear Walmart” which documents the corporate giant’s history of unfair treatment of its workforce. ‘Vis Mens Lux Rex’ is about war, domination, and hubris, ‘Hypnosis’ explores losing perspective and a sense of reality.

‘Sensorium 2220’ ponders the future of humanity as machines and software reshape the world we live in, ‘Broken Mosaic’ narrates the fits and starts, ups and downs, small victories and setbacks of the long process that is recovery, and finally, the EP’s closing track ‘The Riots’ is from the documentary ‘Struggle & Hope’ and is about the Tulsa massacre on May 31 1921.

African by birth, European by upbringing, Asian spiritually and American at heart, Nicolas Laget has been a musician since childhood. His early years were spent singing in choirs and playing Baroque chamber music on the alto recorder. In his teens Nicolas expanded his musical horizons by studying the flute, the tenor saxophone and the keyboard. After obtaining a masters degree in composition from the University of Virginia with a specialization in Orchestral music, he seized the first professional opportunity he came across and settled in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

In the last decade Nicolas – aka Kolai - has become a noted producer. His first album, released by the London-based jazz/soul/dance label Chillifunk, was nominated best jazz album of 2003 by London’s Jazz FM. He has performed in Europe, Asia, and the Americas with various bands as a flutist and tenor saxophonist.

In 2003 Nicolas founded the Sweet Spot Studio in response to the many engineering requests he received since releasing his first records. He has helped craft Jazz, Rock, Ska, Neo Soul, Gospel, and Dance records heard across the world.
