Nili Fossae is a group of large, concentric trenches on Mars, located at approximately 22°N, 75°E. It is also the collaboration between UK-based multi-instrumentalists and composers Pete Sené and Martin Roberts.

Sené and Roberts met while touring with different bands in 2017, sharing an inherent interest in each others live setup. With Sené's work for Everything Everything, and solo project Lessening; and Roberts' career with German electronic act Schiller, and band Aelius, it was clear they had similar styles in composition and sound design. When the world stood still in May 2020, the two decided to use the time to collaborate on an EP inspired by artists they loved; Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, and Olafur Arnalds to name a few.

‘Into The Blue’, Nili Fossae's first complete body of work, is an exploration of Ambient Electronica, Post-Classical, and everything in between; focussing on tone and texture over traditional musical structure. The EP was written remotely, with Sené and Roberts composing and drafting arrangements in their respective home studios, before building upon the bare-bone ideas with additional synths and production.

With their collective careers in live music spanning over two decades, it is only a matter of time before Nili Fossae make their debut live appearance; where their synth-heavy aesthetic will forge the landscape of their Martian namesake.

This track was recently featured on the influential “Hearts of Space” radio show.

This electronic arrangement of the composition is inspired by early, baroque, classical and neoclassical music, as well as electronic music and minimalism. Diane Arkenstone – Chapel of the Soul (Spotify)

“Etheral strings and soaring vocals combine with a beautifully understated piano to create Diane Arkenstone’s Chapel Of The Soul. The droning strings and repetitive piano combine to produce a calming piece, designed for reflection of the special moments of life and contemplation of the soul. ”

Arist shared with Nagamag few words behind this song inspiration:

“ I had just finished a hike through a fragrant forest of juniper, piñon and pines trees, to clear my head. As I was walking through the trees, I felt strength and release in my body, mind and spirit, and thought of the forest as a kind of ‘chapel of the soul'. When I got home to the studio, the energy of the forest was still with me, and the song was born.” - Diane Arkenstone

Iderdown Interview on Nagamag

Categories: Electronica Features, Electronica Interviews, Features, Interviews, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

.

Nagamag:
Which are the genres that describe your music style better?

Iderdown:
I like to think of it as leftfield music, influenced by a wide array of genres. They all get blended together when I start writing, so any track at any time will be a mixture of noise, prog, post-rock, ambient, drone, glitch, trance, industrial and breakbeat.

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Iderdown:
Well, I was in an industrial band in high school and at the same time playing around with screamtracker. This was followed by some indie rock years in bands and toying with 4-track bedroom lo-fi songwriting. I started releasing my instrumental electronic music as iderdown in 2003 and continue to work on diverse projects like the dark folk band Within and playing as part of the drone collective Cosmic Homeostasis.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Iderdown:
I have been making melodies in my head for long as I can remember and grew up in a house full of music but the first time I heard the songs that made me want to create was during high school, where I was lucky to have a group of friends who explored strange worlds of music.

Nagamag:
Tell me about your latest release?

Iderdown:
iderdown's last release was a collaboration ep with Arcane Trickster called Snowbird. It's an ambient soundtrack for a tranquil shore.

Nagamag:
What's coming up in the future for iderdown?

Iderdown:
A five track Lp of Ambient music that I wrote mostly inspired by the music of Peter Namlook. There will also be a companion set of remixes by Tempest Recording and Slice Records artists.

Nagamag:
Many artists listen to genres that they are not producing music for. Which track is your favorite that is NOT similar to yours?

Iderdown:
Japanese Breakfast "Posing In Bondage"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which is the track from a similar artist you admire?

Iderdown:
BVDUB "Never In The Prison Of Their Stars"
