Jaap Mol Interview on Nagamag

.

Nagamag:
What are the genres that describe better your music style?

Jaap Mol:
My main genre is neo classical. But I tend to expand it to ambient electronic music with some beats where I feel they add something to the music.

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Jaap Mol:
I started taking classical piano lessons when I was about 6 years old. I don't exactly remember why it were piano lessons and not another instrument, but I kept playing for years. I even played church organ for while, but discovered I'm way more inspired by a piano.
When I was around 15 years old, I discovered punk bands and that was all I wanted to play from that point on. So I bought a bass guitar, started a band and quit my piano lessons when I was 18. Since then I played in all kinds of bands, mostly pop punk, but also bands inspired on those really cool emo core bands from the zeros which I still love.

But when I finished my study, that musical environment dried up and so did the bands. I went back to my keys, sang in a a capella group and worked on some music on my own but never really got back to it; life happened and I got a job as a teacher. Back then I thought I'd never do any serious music at all ever again.

But then a friend of mine started a band and needed someone to play keys and that's how I got back into music. It worked out really well and I started playing in bands again, but this time no punk and bass guitars, but keys in pop, pop-rock and electro pop bands.

Meanwhile I discovered that my love for pop music and my interest in quiet piano and string music could be mixed pretty good and I started experimenting with what turned out to be the neo classical ambient music I create now. But I am always tempted to try new styles and experiment with other genres. Right now, for example, I worked on a live show for which I remixed all my tracks into an ambient electronic hybrid DJ-set.

That's what I love about music the most; I get bored quite easily, but never with music. It's an endless source of inspiration.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Jaap Mol:
I think, funnily enough, that first feeling when I heard a punk track on the radio has been one of the most important moments to spark my music career. I waited for weeks, glued to the radio, to record that one song to tape, because I never heard anything like it. That was a really important moment, because that was when I realised that it was actually possible to create something myself.

Nagamag:
What inspires you to create new music?

Jaap Mol:
Everything I create in music always starts with a sound I love. That can be the sound of a beautiful old piano, something I come up with when tweaking a synth, or just a sample from a plugin in my DAW.
I'm not a very technical player, and at first I saw that as a limitation. But I learned that to be really creative, you have to set boundaries and limitations, and mine forces me to really dive into a sound I love, and create something beautiful from that. I'm embracing that now, and I'm really happy with how it turns out.

Nagamag:
What does your creative process look like?

Jaap Mol:
I like to do a lot by myself. I'm kind of a control freak, so when I didn't find what I wanted to create elsewhere, I wanted to master the whole process. I compose and produce while writing, just like pop records.
Sometimes I ask other studios for help because they have better equipment, but most parts I record at my own place. I like to do the mixing myself as wel, because a lot of mixing happens during the production.

I like to work with concepts for my music, so that's why I prefer to do al the artwork, photography and video's myself as well. To master all theses parts of the creative process takes a long learning curve, but I like to be curious and just love discovering new things to improve. It's an infinite playground.

Nagamag:
Most artists have a favorite song from a different music genre than the one they are producing music for... Which is yours?

Jaap Mol:
Sufjan Stevens "A Little Lost"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which track from a similar artist you admire?

Jaap Mol:
Jon Hopkins "Echo Dissolve"

I Am Snow Angel – life breath (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Electronica, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , |

“The perfection of simplicity from "Life breath" directly at your speakers. So etherial and elusive Until you realize that it's over. Like water flowing slowly in a small pond carrying leaves to an unknown direction. Respect for that true artist!”

-Nagamag.com

life breath is a textural, instrumental meditation on collective loss and rebirth. It is the second track on my forthcoming EP "elegy" (due out March 12, 2021). Fun additional fact: I am a sound designer for Ableton, the Germany-based electronic software/hardware company. I design midi instrument pre-sets for their digital audio workstation, Ableton Live. One of my recent creations is a midi pre-set in the "Drone Lab" sound pack (which was released alongside Ableton Live 11) called "lifebreath." I designed this drone-y sound as I was indulging in this instrumental meditation, and I wanted to share it with Ableton users and music creators around the world.

I AM SNOW ANGEL fuses digital and organic elements, creating a sound that is at once ethereal and earthy. The music is composed, performed, produced and engineered by recording artist and multi-instrumentalist Julie Kathryn. I AM SNOW ANGEL has been featured in MusicTech Magazine, TapeOp, American Songwriter, Magnetic Mag, Refinery 29, and many more for her “fluorescent beats and emotionally charged melodies” and “dedication to craft.” She is an imaginative and prolific producer, sound designer for Ableton, and co‐founder of Female Frequency, a musical collective dedicated to empowering women in the music industry. Her newest release, Elegy (due out March 12, 2021), is a creative meditation on our collective loss and rebirth.

Zachary Bruno – Emunah (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“-Emunah- is pure neo-classical minimalism. With repeated and slightly varied patterns, developing an attitude that is perceived by the ear right away. -Emunah- is a way to express the author's personality and the freedom of being.”

“-Emunah- это чистый неоклассический минимализм, паттерны которой повторяются и незначительно варьируются, создавая нужный настрой и максимально легко воспринимаемой на слух. -Emunah- это способ выразить авторскую индивидуальность и свободу бытия.”

-Nagamag.com

In August 2013, Zachary released his debut album, Before the Rain, which reached #37 on the New Age charts. Kathy Parsons, of MainlyPiano.com called the collection of original solo piano pieces “amazing music and an extraordinary beginning to a very promising career in music.” After being introduced to piano lessons at age 6, music composition almost instantly caught Zachary’s interest. And it wasn’t long before he was attempting to scribble down melodies and riffs onto homemade staff-paper. While composition came naturally to Zach, it took the constant encouragement of family and friends to finally persuade him to record his first album of his original compositions. Finally, after over 4 years of practicing, composing, and putting the final touches on the pieces, Zachary released his debut album of 12 original piano solos out into the world. The album would be titled, Before the Rain (2013). It did not take long before he saw an interest for his music, and a year later, he released his second album, Dawn Light (2014), which was promptly nominated and awarded 2015 Album of the Year by Whisperings Solo Piano Radio (2016). Zachary is currently working on his third solo piano album scheduled for release in late fall of 2018.

“Contemplation of infinity, which is filled around our world. Feel like a bird flying over the water surface. Hear the vibration of the nearest land. Only you, your fantasies and new single -Zenith-, are diluting silence and its magnificence.”

“Созерцание бесконечности, которыми наполнен окружающий наш мир. Почувствуйте себя птицей пролетающей над водной гладью. Услышьте вибрацию ближайших берегов. Только вы, ваши фантазии и новый сингл -Zenith-, разбавляющий воцарившуюся тишину своим великолепием.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with us few words about this song"

"This track was created after a free form recording session with friend and cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne. I recorded Raphael improvising for a couple hours in several different keys and styles and then compiled the recordings into a sample library. I then chopped and layered sections of the of the recordings to create a rich soundscape of strings and pads that float gently underneath bubbling arpeggios."

Based in Toronto, Ontario the music of Sun Rain is an opportunity for composer/producer Chad Skinner to explore the sounds of modern classical, ambient, and downtempo. The main focus for this project is to create thoughtful music conducive to feelings of contemplative stillness for the calmer moments that life has to offer.

Jaap Mol – Here To Love (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Ambient and neoclassical; the perfect union of two elements. This is the love of two hearts, sunsets and sunrises. Also the whisper of the morning dawn and the singing of the cicadas during evenings. -Here To Love- gives an unforgettable feeling.”

“Эмбиент и неоклассика - это идеальный союз двух стихий. Это любовь двух сердец, закаты и рассветы, шепот утреннего прибоя и пение цикад прохладными вечерами. -Here To Love- дарит незабываемое ощущение. ”

-Nagamag.com

The fundament for this track was a rather hateful speech by one of our angry world leaders which I sampled an tried to turn into something beautiful. The result is this peaceful piano piece, which is essentially a loop, supplemented by drifitng synths, haunting cello’s and guitar. We can turn hate into beauty. Because we’re all together in this world and we’re here to love.

Woulds – Cure (Spotify)

“-Cure- can be called a model of cinematic ambient and drone. A thick, white mist like atmosphere, a strong, complex melody within the genre. Light touch of despair and wandering alone.”

“-Cure- можно смело назвать образцом кинематографического ambient и drone. Густая, словно белые слои тумана атмосфера, сильная, комплексная мелодия в рамках жанра. Лёгкий налёт отчаяния и блуждающего одиночества.”

“-Introduction track (Lull) - from the new album -You & I Would Die- rise like a huge, invisible magnet that draws in networks, where the voltage increases with each passing second. Do you feel it? Unimaginable feeling.”

“Трек -Introduction (Lull)- с нового альбома -You & I Would Die- словно огромный, невидимый магнит затягивает в свои сети, в которых с каждой секундой растёт напряжение. Чувствуете его? Невообразимое ощущение.”

-Nagamag.com

S. E. Webster is a folk-rock artist born and raised in the deserts of Southern California. S.E.’s music evokes sunsets, sepia tones, and long drives on dusty, far-off roads. With intimate vocals and lush instrumentation, S. E. has cultivated a modern but timeless sound. His music gives voice to feelings of longing and nostalgia for what could have been.

“You & I Would Die” is a 4 song debut EP set for release on February 26th, 2021. The songs trace the arc of a romance destined to end too soon, the victim of circumstance and cross-country moves. As the first chapter of a trilogy, this EP sets the scene and brings the listener along for the ride. The follow-up EP is set to be released in Summer 2021.

S. E. collaborated with producer/composer Erik Groysman (Karmina, Cape Weather, Drunk History) to create a visceral, visually-stimulating experience with the help of mixer Steve Bone (Cape Weather, Mario Jose, Hannah Sumner).
