Geist Contagion Interview on Nagamag

.

Nagamag:
What are the genres that describe better your music style?

Geist Contagion:
With my project Geist Contagion, I find myself with varied inspirations from one song to the next, so it becomes a bit of a daunting task to label each with its own discrete genre. There are elements of Glitchstep, Breakbeat, Techno, Industrial, Ambient, and Drone throughout my releases. I generally don't stick to one style for very long because I get bored easily, and I like to keep the listener on their toes.

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Geist Contagion:
I started out like a lot of people do, playing guitar in a garage band with my friends. *That eventually fizzled out, as it often tends to.* Shortly after, I attended school for artist management and music production, which is where I developed my love of synthesizers, and of a whole new world of musical styles and composition techniques. From there, I dove headfirst into experimental electronic music which lead to the formation of my main project, The Databats. I met the folks over at Slice Records around this time and after working together on a couple of gigs, they brought us into their stable of artists. Geist Contagion spawned from there as my first full solo project. I wanted an avenue for the music I was writing that didn't stylistically gel with my work with The Databats. This has allowed me to explore my songwriting ideas more deeply, and to illuminate music that otherwise wouldn't be making it out into the world at large.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Geist Contagion:
I've felt a strong connection to music since I was very young. Some of my favourite parts of Saturday morning cartoons were the theme songs, not the cartoons themselves. As an adult, one of my more formative experiences was attending a live performance by Alessandro Cortini's solo project Sonoio, opening for Ladytron at The Phoenix in Toronto. Watching him utilize a myriad of synthesizers and vocal effects to craft such a layered and complex performance really opened my eyes to what was possible as a solo electronic performer, and to what an audience would be interested in experiencing.

Nagamag:
Tell us about your new album Écoutez and the process behind it.

Geist Contagion:
Écoutez is a collaborative album by Geist Contagion and Arcane Trickster. I met Damiano from Arcane Trickster a few years back when The Databats travelled to Australia and hooked up with the Slice Records crew for a couple of club gigs. We got along well and had a good rapport, so working together seemed like the logical next step.
Flash forward to 2020, and we found ourselves with a lot more time on our hands, so Damiano and I messaged back and forth a bit to discuss our ideas for a project. We then exchanged a bunch of demos via email, and once we decided on the tracks we wanted to use, we got down to editing, remixing and performing on one another's work. The ensuing result was a rather cohesive blend of each of our styles that we hope provides the audience with a fun journey from start to finish.

"Écoutez" means "listen" in French. It's both a title and an instruction. We'd like the audience to take a moment out of their hectic lives to do exactly that, just listen.

Nagamag:
What are the plans for Geist Contagion in 2021?

Geist Contagion:
I've been writing a lot of music, so hopefully we'll have followup to my record "Residue" out by the end of the year. On the collaborative front, there are a couple of projects going on at Slice Records that I plan to be very involved in, so you'll be hearing new remixes and joint productions from me as well. I'm very excited for those.
In terms of live performances, we're still under tight lockdown up here in Canada, so I've had to adapt. Thankfully, there are more ways than ever to reach out and interact with your audience, and I plan to take full advantage of those. Livestream performances, music videos, and interactive experiences are all part of the plan, so stay tuned for that! I'm also hoping I'll be able to get out and perform work by this project live some time before the end of the year, as I haven't had the opportunity to do that yet.

Nagamag:
Music has no borders and many of us we may listen to more genres that we are mainly involved. So share with Nagamag which track comes first in your mind from music but is NOT similar to your genre?

Geist Contagion:
Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois "Night MXCMPV1 P74"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which track from a similar artist you admire?

Geist Contagion:
Oneohtrix Point Never "Nothing's Special"

“Music David Whitman is a bouquet of passions and a deep, sincere respect for his work. The album Soul Flow is an example of defeating improvisations within the framework of Jazz, and ensemble percussion as an inventive element of hunting technical masterpieces.”

“Музыка David Whitman это букет из страсти и глубокого, искреннего уважения к своему творчеству. Альбом Soul Flow пример поразительной импровизации в рамках изысканного Джаза, а ансамблевая перкуссия как изумительный элемент ловкого технического мастерства.”

“One more special track from Hypnotic Peafowl & Bendja in slow bpm and Psydub style. Clear synthesis and prototype sounds, which prove the great experience of these artists.”

-Nagamag.com

Hypnotic Peafowl breathes new life into his experiments and explores different soundscapes with a quality sound design. Always in a work of advanced hybridization, he brilliantly mixes his multiple influences: orchestral music, jazz, funk, bass music. In this opus, some sweet piano bar melodies and retro inserts with stoner rock influences, dominated by hypnotic, repetitive rhythms, accompanied by a very heavy bass with a warm envelope.

This album is part of a long narrative, all my releases are built around a central character : the peacock and his spirit. The metaphor for imaging his spirit is the Pandora's box.

Quickly it is the story of a colorful peacock who is schizophrenic with all the other worries that arise from such a pathology.

Beautiful to look at, full of life and energy. A funk/Jazz fan, he exudes the joy of life. But not that, the black sides are there.

All of my past and future releases are in the form of chapters that tell a passage of the Peacock's life. Here: Pandora's box or Logorrhia tells the impression of feeling better after a first meeting before the awareness and the psychic fall.

“Another twisting creation from Hypnotic Peafowl. The title "Understand the Universe" make us wonder how it all began while listening the craftfully composed sound vibrations.”

Aurélien Dornier, sound designer, musician and composer, releases his first album "Logorrhia" on the Hadra Records label with his Hypnotic Peafowl project: 8 new exclusive tracks, resolutely eclectic, which reflect the artist's advanced musical research. A work that is at once colourful, festive and dynamic, enriched by collaborations with artists such as Bendja or the emerging French group Version Bizar.

Chapter 3 of a cleverly orchestrated narration, Hypnotic Peafowl transcends the simple sound production and has been working on a work that has been a common thread in "Pandora's Box" since its first independent release "Enygma". A work of intention where nothing is left to chance: from the visual aesthetics of each piece of work to the choice of sampling, Hypnotic Peafowl produces each release as a chapter in its history. After releasing its second release "The Mirror" on Zenon Records in early 2020, Hypnotic Peafowl is now laying the third stone of its building "La Boite de Pandore".

2019 will mark for him the release of his first album "Enygma" a self-produced album But not that!

He continues to be noticed by his musical eclecticism, in fact mastering himself Peafowl is not content to produce music Psygressive intended for the dancefloor, lover of alternative musical culture he has another facet to his credit.

He likes to produce songs where he gives free rein to all his imagination where the words of others would not be only dancefloor but also musicality, subtlety and travel. Music where he likes to take the time and embark with him in another world ... always accompanied by Jazz sound he loves so much.

You will understand, Aurelien did not stop surprising us that it is on the dancefloor and on an alternative scene there is a good chance for you to meet him in the course of this year 2019!

“Brand new and very emotional chilling work from Sulkin' Raven. An electronic music producer who combines the ambient sounds for passive listening with the grooves for the active ear.”

Artist shared with us few words about this song:

"When I wrote this EP back in 2016, it was the first time I set out to release music on my own without any collaborators. I had worked with my band members or worked with filmmakers on musical projects in the past but never solely by myself, so this was a new adventure for me. At the time, I was still very unsure how to capture the sound in my head, and what I ended up releasing wasn't very representative of what I wanted at the time. I didn't know who I was as an independent artist, and I lacked the skills to manifest the sounds in my head without others' help. Following my first EP's release, I continued to experiment and develop as an artist, leading to better and better music from Sulkin' Raven. Now I feel like I have found myself as a craftsman, a composer, and an artist. Because I was so unsure of myself when releasing my first EP, I never promoted the songs much because I knew deep down they weren't me, and they weren't representative of the sounds that were in my heart. Now I've re-made, re-shaped, and re-released the EP, bringing it up to my current standard for my music. Now it’s a release I'm truly proud of and something I feel excited to share with everyone in the world. Okay, for Real This Time represented how I felt then, and it is how I feel right now with this new version of this old track"

“Imagine the mysterious “Atlantide” sinking deeply in the sea through a short colourful dream. A special Electronic music piece by Musetta full of passion and fantasy.”

-Nagamag.com

With their new single “Atlantide” Musetta goes back to their trip-hop roots. Join them in this journey through the ancient ruins of a long lost civilization, Atlantis, guided by Matteo’s deep and dark textures and Marinella’s siren call.

Spawned in the armpit of Milan, Italy, Musetta burst onto the downtempo scene in 2008 with their debut album, “Mice to meet you!”, which combines Marinella Mastrosimone’s haunting lyrics with Matteo Curcio’s evocative atmospheres to generate a solid record chock full of technical masterpieces, inspired by early 20th century arts, film-noir and science fiction – a retro feel with a futuristic edge.

The remixes of ‘Peace and Melody’, soon followed by ‘Red Star’, ‘Nicotine’ and ‘Standing by my Side’, released on over 150 records by Morrison Recordings (Canada) and Armada Records (Holland), climbed the Beatport charts and got the endorsement of Pete Tong, Tiesto, John Digweed, Sasha, Armin van Bureen, Markus Schulz, Paul Oakenfold, Laurent Garnier and David Guetta.

Musetta’s tracks were synched on several TV series, such as “Better Call Saul”, “Elementary”, “House of Lies”, “Star-Crossed” and features (“Enough Said”, “The Past is a Foreign Land”).
