Often – Palm Trees (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , , |

“The mood is warm fuzzy blankets on a beach wile a sunset is happening. The lyrics are deep and very well filtered with a bit of recording magic. Slow steady tempo sets the tone. ”

Artist said about this song:

“I had a best friend that I would refer to as my longest relationship. We spent our 20’s partying and weeping all over New York’s lesbian dance floors. It was exactly how your 20’s should go, including how abruptly it all seems to end. There was so much buried beneath our friendship, so when I moved away and started to know and see myself more clearly I really couldn’t avoid our disjointed roots. Last year was particularly hard, as it was for literally everyone, but it also gave me a lot of time to sit and stew and work things out and be mad in ways I never gave myself the grace to be. One night when I got near the end of that rope it was about 2 in the morning and I just needed to do something with all the energy. I started playing these very simple chords and this sweet melody formed and turned into “Palm Trees”. There’s kind of a knot in the song, a lump in your throat of all the things left unsaid, but it’s ultimately a simple goodbye. An acknowledgement of what was and the peace of knowing when it’s time to turn the page.”

Born in the flat plains of Ohio, Often (they/she) hunts for what can carve her out. A natural wanderer, they shifted their perspectives in the Arizona desert, the mountains of France, and the crowded streets of New York. After achieving early dreams of being a working photographer, Often began slowly sinking deeper into their infatuation with the transformational nature of sound. First fitting themselves into an electronic chill pop duo called DIMES, they played small shows in Brooklyn dives until they escaped to and ultimately transformed from life in Atlanta, Georgia.

Often has been discovered on several Spotify Editorial Playlists, was featured on the series finale of Showtime’s Golden Globe winning show “The Affair,” and has a genuine investment in making connection with her audience, hosting a Weekly Reground each Wednesday evening offering a safe space to center themselves and others. Often aims to provide the calm, euphoric experience of healing within her music. Little spells to release our truest selves.

QUOTE

“‘almost everything i’ve ever wanted to say’ is truthfully that — it is in every way, nearly everything I’ve ever wanted to say musically, lyrically, sonically, experimentally, and emotionally. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to create and complete a work like this; something where I’ve sat in my room and slowly worked from beginning to end without any real goal in mind. Almost like I’m reading a book about my life, piecing together one experience after another but not quite knowing where or how the story ends.”

-andreas owens

'almost everything i've ever wanted to say'

The mentality and overall vision behind andreas owens has been pretty different to that of The Millennial Club. Ironically, the biggest distinction between the two projects lies less in the final product, but more so within the creative process itself.

Adapting an “anything goes” mindset helped facilitate a lack of pressure to fit within a specific genre and andreas owens quickly found himself enjoying the refreshing freedom present in creating without convention. This unadulterated creative energy ultimately led to the birth of almost everything i’ve ever wanted to say: a diverse and genre-blending EP that not only reflects his personal growth as a songwriter and producer, but surely defines his personal footprint as a truly generational artist.

BIOGRAPHY

andreas owens is the solo project of Los Angeles-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Andres Owens, the lead vocalist of indie pop and R&B band The Millennial Club. Delicately blending intimate vocals with unabashedly ‘pop’ backbeats, the So-Cal native has been slowly but steadily building a catalogue of truly unique material. Embracing the ever-evolving notion of bedroom pop, everything is written, recorded, and produced in his (tiny) bedroom-turned-studio.

In his own words, “It’s the only way I’ve found it to feel authentically myself. The safe, familiar space is the catalyst for facilitating something visceral and unapologetically my own. It allows me to release my compulsive ‘perfectionist mindset’ and instead create with the understanding that mistakes are inevitably a unique and beautiful part of the process that makes it my own.”

Track Commentary by andreas owens

“bad4you”

“‘bad4you’ is likely the first song I’ve ever written where I can truly say I understood the significance of every sonic and conceptual decision. I’m not sure why, but with ‘bad4you’ in particular, I felt like something just clicked and suddenly everything made sense to my brain. Writing and arranging the song became less about convention and expectation, and more about what I felt the song needed, throwing caution to the wind, and consciously letting the song finish itself. I think in doing that – in a sense, giving myself to the song and not trying to dictate its final form – I found a place of comfort knowing I wasn’t forcing anything into the track that perhaps didn’t belong. Through the process I think it came into focus that production is, in every sense, a language, and producing ‘bad4you’ really helped widen my vocabulary.”

Teulu – Fulgurant (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“There is a real ethereal quality & sense of spaciousness in Teulu’s track “Fulgurant,” Underlined with melancholy, a little darkness & danger, but above all with love & wonder. This is a real lights down, headphones on, Eye’s closed, An audio, sensory delight to be savoured..”

-Nagamag.com

“Fulgurant,” meaning the flash of lightning, is the debut single from Teulu’s forthcoming 3 track EP, Fulgurant. It follows the rise and fall of emotions around seeing something so spectacular yet frightening and potentially destructive. To truly see the beauty within the chaos.

https://www.instagram.com/teulumusic/

Initially based out of Portland, OR, Teulu found an obsession with the rawness of the rich, dense forests of the pacific northwest. In these forests came those extended moments of solitude and solace. It was during these nomadic excursions that Teulu realized he had more to offer than drumming for a variety of different indie rock projects. From this, his vivid thoughts and feelings started to transform into their own compositions.

Not long after Teulu found footing in this laid back electronic genre, he grew restless of routine, and decided to hit the road. The goal : to live minimally, and create through real, routine-less experience. Fulgurant is the beginning of this endeavor.

“Few artists have their own personal production and “Juno Roome” proves that he’s one of them. All you have to do is listen to his new Lo-fi Pop single, concentrate on the etherial voice and elusive melodies of this gem. Don’t forget to watch the clip too!”

Juno Roome is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, filmmaker, good driver, bad stockbroker. My first impression of him was that he is tall and has a low voice because that was his Tinder bio. He lives in a bunker in Sunset Park with a member of the Triads and a diarrhea monster. The last time I tried writing about Juno, he got really depressed. I hope he does not lose too much money in stocks. ~ Julie Chen (2021)

Sofi Gev – Horrors in the Dark (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , |

“"Horrors in the Dark" is a song that talks about our bad life incidents. Traumatic experiences deeply burried in the mind, but never forgotten. Even if we cannot erase such negative memories, we should find the strength to become unaffected from their influences. Sofi Gev sings to bring hope and somehow soothe our broken hearts. Priceless work from a real artist.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with Nagamag few words behind this inspiration:

"I wrote “Horrors in the Dark” after my mother lost her brother to suicide, which was and remains unbearably hard. My uncle was a towering figure and a gentle soul, wise and compassionate. The third verse is an homage to him, who we lost far too early, and to the power of his life and legacy. His passing and the grief of all the people who loved him made me think about how we all have some kind of trauma inside of us that never fully heals. The kind of pain that is very difficult to even talk about. “Horrors” uses metaphors to convey how we dance around our deepest fears that we sometimes twist into something else entirely in our minds because they’re too painful to face head on. But these dark things in our lives are still always a part of us.

I wrote this song with my producer, Nate Pyfer (Kaskade, The Moth and the Flame, Sego), and co-writer, Chris Scharman. The strings were arranged by Stuart Maxfield (Fictionist, s2_Cool, Mr. Mental)" - Sofi Gev

Josephine Philip – Call My Name (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , |

“There are no words that can convey the beauty of the melody from -Call My Name-. Sound smooth as the sea surface from a bright, sunny day. Sound aesthetics with their own space. You don't notice how fast are four minutes of composition and you are back to your home port.”

“Нет ни одного слова, которое сможет передать всю красоту мелодии -Call My Name-. Звучание ровное, как морская гладь в яркий, солнечный день. Настоящая эстетика звука, в которой есть свой собственный космос. Не замечаешь, как быстро проходят четыре минуты композиции и ты возвращаешься в свою родную гавань.”

-Nagamag.com

Call My Name is a song about love and longing. The longing to be together, to be important, to be held, to be adored, to be missed and ultimately, the burning longing for somebody ready to make sacrifices to save you. A respite from the ordinary terrors we often face alone. It is also a song about staying strong under unbearable conditions and finding strength in loss. The insisting and mesmerizing vocal - equally strong and fragile, is accompanied by a sparse and dreamy composition with trippy drums. It pushes and pulls with the raw strength of the tide. Immersive and confident, the song engulfs you and carries you away.

Singer, composer and performer Josephine Philip lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Her work is influenced by a multitude of artistic expressions; choir works, contemporary art and performance, jazz standards, experimental music, film, literature and classical music. Call My Name is the first single from Josephine Philip as a solo artist.

Philip began working on her forthcoming album during the winter of 2019 and the process accelerated in the pandemic year of 2020. The mutual isolation that many of us shared, became a catalyst for the process and both compositions and lyrics resonate the personal and communal experiences of this period - cycles of intense being, joy, despair, love, frustration and careful optimism, shattered by pessimism, and then briefly relieved by hope.

The songs are written and produced in collaboration with Copenhagen based producer and musician Lasse Martinussen.
