About this video:

Christopher Hunt is a London based writer and video director, with an interest in semiotics, symbolism, surrealism, graphics, and photography. It was for this reason that he was compelled to write, direct and shoot “Flourished” in collaboration with German-based music producer Danya Vodovoz.

The use of VR (virtual reality) is similar to a lucid dream where a person can be immersed into a world of unreality, meanwhile believing that it is true. It was a converging of these two ideas that Christopher wanted within the script and to find ways of exploiting them visually.

Interestingly, while most people report dreaming in color, there is a small percentage of people who claim to only dream in black and white. So to produce “Flourished” in black and white was an alternative away from normality.

Dreams are apparently, an accumulation of things we experience during the day as stored information. However, we can also benefit from dreaming because it acts as a filter for defining reality. Ideas can flow from the process of what happens after sleeping because the subconscious is in the background processing the data and filtering the rubbish from the good. That is why people are known to say “let me sleep on it”.

We are unique because we can live what we conjure up from our thoughts or ideas that have been processed during sleep, although we may not remember what we dreamt most of the time. “Flourished” is about the positive way we manifest our ideas, thoughts, dreams, desire, and things we may have on our minds and finally bring them to life the next day.

The work was the inspiration of Russian filmmaker, Tarkovsky, and shot in black and white with elements of dark and light scenes because he knew how to captivate the viewer. Also, the aim was to have more than just a meaningless music video, and the idea to overlay Shakespeare quotes on selected imagery helped to encapsulate meaning.

The more you look when you replay the video, the more meaning one might find. For example, the flowers on the table at the beginning of the scene, the leaves blowing in the wind, the actress entrapped in budding flowers, and her struggle to touch reality encased in a virtual world.

Our brain is very capable of reading between the lines, and this is probably the reason why we can construct preconceived ideas and ignore the truth. Knowing this fact helps to exploit many possibilities in the video. It is not until further analysis and evaluation over time that we can find the truth. Combining all these elements in the video is a culmination of synchronization, movement, and emotion.

Credit goes to the Actress Giulia Cipriani, who put her soul into each scene, down to shedding tears on cue, and Emelia Millar, age 5, in her first role.

Epitomising the rich culture of their heritage through the imagery and lyricism Vector x Mastaa showcase their new DJ Magnum collaboration ‘No Worries’. Bringing an abundance of feel-good-energy straight to your speakers, as it blares with a seasoned myriad of instruments, from drum patterns to trumpet horns.

Directed by Tokyo James the visuals bring the energy of the track to life as the music video bursts with colour and vibrancy. Forging an experimental style both Vector x Mastaa engrain the essence of African culture with rap, coining a ‘Rapfrobeat’ sound. The balance between both genres is reflected through the music video and lyricisms as African culture is merged with Western clothing and the track includes a mixture of English and Yoruba.

No Worries’ is taken off Vector and Mastaa’s collaborative project ‘CROSSROADS’. The five-track EP spearheads the partnership between Afrobeats and rap. The pair use their rhythm and poetry to construct a different narrative over traditional African beats. They also open up the gate to the whole diaspora as their sound reflects the music derived from numerous countries and their music becomes the playground to where they unite.

Their project ‘CROSSROADS’ is a seamless blend between traditional rap and more a rhythmic and melodic sound. They have also teamed up with DJs on two occasions, which of course includes DJ Magnum on ‘No Worries’, as well as DJ Neptune on ‘Eyan Colgate’. Having developed their artistry as individual acts ‘CROSSROADS’ documents the moment where Vector and Mastaa’s creative paths meet.

Joining the new wave of artist popularising the ‘Rapfrobeat’ sub-genre, Vector x Mastaa are your ones to watch for 2021.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen, the composer collaboration between Stars of the Lid founder Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O’Halloran, are set to release new album ‘Invisible Cities’ on February 26th 2021, the stunning score to the critically acclaimed theatre production directed by London Olympics ceremony video designer Leo Warner. Released on their own Artificial Pinearch Manufacturing label, the album comes as part of an agreement with A Winged Victory for the Sullen’s current label, Ninja Tune.

On the album, the music is distilled into a 45-minute version that draws on expansive worlds, hopeful compositions, and ominous soundscapes. “Desires Are Already Memories” is a steady unraveling, with heartbeat ambient synths slowly building on and overtaking the track’s choral ambience.

In some instances all it takes is one moment before you don’t recognize yourself. You’re riding a horse trough the desert of Arizona and suddenly you find yourself sitting opposite a stranger that is yourself. With their song “In a Minute” INEZ look closer at the crossroads as live presents them to us. Front woman Ines Brodbeck wishes herself to “another place without time” and takes a dive into a pool (of sound and water, that is).

In the water pomegranates float around, a symbol of fertility, and in the music itself reverbchambers open up to new dimensions. “My time will be mine” sings Brodbeck and sounds as timeless as sublime. In the jangly guitars we catch an earful of Ennio Morricone and in the crimson cloak a glimpse of David Lynch. And then she inserts a jack cable into the pomegranate – and there goes an explosion of sound and colour.

“Esse” (Latin, infinitive, “to be, to exist”) is the centerpiece of the “Symmetry” album. The entire album is symmetrical, and “Esse” itself is completely symmetrical and reversible in time, both musically and visually in this video.

Formed by Finnish singer-songwriter Jussi Alamikkelä, Ivory Woods reached the ears of its indie folk audience in 2017 with their debut album Ivory Woods. The album consisted of songs from the previous couple of years and was put together with help from producer Matias Kiiveri and fellow musicians Atte Loponen, Jeremia Kangas, Matias Haataja, Aapo-Matti Puhakka and Joni Seppänen. It presented a unique combination of solitary, nature inspired folk songs with deeply contemplative lyrics and the band’s built-in rock n’ roll flow that had been bringing them together for years.

The group headed back to Hollywood House studios, Helsinki, in November 2017 to record their second release, All the World Is Yours EP, which was released in February 2018.

After focusing on touring, writing new material and launching an unofficial series of home recordings called Timberline, the band released their newest single Flickering Light with b-side Sanctuary in early 2020. The release presented Ivory Woods in their current 9-piece form with six guitars. The sound keeps on growing.

I felt that the year they’ve had meant there were loads of DJs out there who would love to know about these early killer cuts. So, I asked them to do a 2020 update of ‘Walk On Water’ to see if I was right…”

Music, while sharing stages with the likes of David Guetta, Roger Sanchez and Thomas Gold just to name just a few.

‘Walk on Water’ feat Terri B! is built on vast, rubbery kick drums that set a fine groove while the warm chords bring the house heat. Terri B!’s vocal is the glossy icing on top – it soars to the heavens and will swell the hearts of all who hear it as the razor sharp drums drive onwards and upwards.

This is a perfect way to end the year for this ever more essential duo and is sure to be the standout tune in many New Year’s Eve lockdown sets as 2020 draws to a close.
