I wanted to write a song inspired by the Andrew Sisters as well as Bing Crosby and dedicated to the idea that one person multiplied by another can seem so much greater than the sum of its two parts. This has definitely been true in my experience. The fantastic harmonies are courtesy of Abigail Flowers who has recently been hailed as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by the Nashville Industry Music Awards. Often, in the Big Band Experience's live performances, I highlight certain musicians or small groups within the band. "Multiplied by Two" is no exception. Aaron Moe plays throughout the tune with an impromptu arrangement on alto saxophone and Dave Stanoch lays back with a one-take, live groove. Both instrumentalists are clinicians, authors and teachers who've stuck with me since I started this musical adventure. I may have to rename the song - "Multiplied by Three." The Big Band Experience set out to offer a taste of a true big band...the style and the pulse, the horn arrangements and the intimate crooners. As a singer-songwriter who appreciates many genres of music, my original compositions can sometimes be all over the proverbial map. Recently, I've been thrilled to find high school jazz vocalists sending me their versions of "Multiplied by Two" - some with an upright bass, others simply a cappella. I'd like to think "Multiplied by Two" may be at home in the feel of the Great American Songbook, and that this is noticed. If so, I've truly succeeded.

Hijaz: The wail from a foreign land

This song is the wail of the helpless feeling of "homesickness" of people who are in search, especially those who are in search of themselves.

The story was formed by the encounter of a person, on a musical journey who had lived abroad for a long time and finally returned to his homeland, with other souls that are constantly in search like him. First, the wailing sound of ney was heardand then the words of Mevlana Celalettin Rumi…The melodies and rhythms that were revealed always reminded the same endless longing, which is the longing for the "essence" where one cannot stay distant from "oneself".

Undoubtedly, it is Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi’s words that best describe this longing.

The first 18 couplets of the Masnavi are about the "ney", which is pulled off from the reed bed and cauterized inside with fire, narrating its cries in the hands of a master and trying to return to its homeland. Nevertheless, this search, this cry never ceases. As the poet Ahmet Cemil Cankat from Urfa said, being on a foreign land is always hard...

Manchester’s Marconi Union have offered up their introspective blend of electronics and atmosphere over the course of the discography, and there’s a certain graceful manner in how their richly melodic compositions unfold, evoking a weight and emotion through experimentation and boundary pushing.

The new single “Strata” sees Marconi Union diving headfirst into their expansion of sound. "Strata is a rare example, for us, of a track that we tried out live a few times before committing to the album version,” Meadows explains. "It’s one of the most up-tempo pieces we've ever written, it has an energy and emotion which for us borders on elation.”

For the first time on Signals, out November 5th on Just Music, there is a distinct propulsive nature to the proceedings that add a more rhythmic touch and wide-reaching perspective. Signals was informed by the bands’ admiration of a number of different drummers and this played a significant part in helping shape its sound, an admitted shift following the release of the largely beat-less Dead Air. The upcoming album combines synthetic textures with organic sound, and merges the familiar with the unknown, transporting the listener deep into their imagination. The one-word title is both mysterious and evocative, suggesting a multitude of images that range from high-tech electronic messaging to ghostly abandoned radio stations and even that most basic level of human expression: body language.
