The Leeds-based dream-folk duo, Sunflower Thieves have shared their latest stunning track, ‘Lichtenberg Figures’. The track is released with a brand new visual featuring the duo.

The new track takes its name from the branch-like scars or patterns which form after either the human body or the ground are struck by lightning. Like their previous two singles from their upcoming EP (‘Sirens’ and ‘I Don’t Know Why’), ‘Lichtenberg Figures’ is a track warmly wrapped in personal experience and authenticity as the duo address finding strength and life-changing experiences from moments of adversity and vulnerability.

Accompanying the release is a new video, directed by Olivia Sofia Ferrara which captures the duo’s close friendship as they are seen performing the track as they playfully spread coloured paint on each other and around a studio in shapes reminiscent of Lichtenberg figures.

Speaking on ‘Lichtenberg Figures’, Sunflower Thieves said, “We were fascinated by Lichtenberg figures because of how they can look beautiful whilst coming from something so intensely dangerous and powerful as lightning. The song is about going through something traumatic and coming out the other side stronger, proving to yourself and others that you’re unbeatable.”

There’s no shortage of legendary stories about songwriting duos: Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, King and Goffin…the list is immense, and each has their own quirks and twists. As the world entered a global pandemic in 2020, a songwriting partnership for a new era began to emerge: Kerenyi/Spears, an artistry partnership between songwriter Justin Kerenyi and producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer Deke Spears.

The duo first teamed up in 2017 when Deke produced Justin’s first solo album, Silent Stars. Kerenyi, a lawyer by trade, always had an affinity for songwriting and had played in an Atlanta area band for nearly a decade. To make his lifelong dream of recording an album a reality, he turned to Deke. The two had previously met through work with the Songs for Kids Foundation, a music mentorship and interactive program organization for kids and young adults with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities.

Deke, an accomplished musician and producer in his own right, had spent nearly a decade performing and recording with the buzz-worthy Atlanta band, Quiet Hounds, when he relocated to a farm in Athens, GA in 2019. There, he began to construct his own studio, Magnetic Recording, from the ground up.

Having bonded over a shared affinity for well-curated music, as the pandemic became a reality, their friendship took on a new flavor. Justin approached Deke with an album concept in 2020 – bringing his songs to life through a variety of Atlanta-based artists and vocalists for a collaborative project.

In this virtual world, the duo worked together by video and email for about a year before having the opportunity to safely collaborate in person. The pair connected over very organic, wholesome aesthetics with inspirations ranging from classic ‘70s artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Jackson Browne; Bob Dylan; and The Beatles, to more modern artists that include Dawes, Ray LaMontagne, Tom Petty, and Elliott Smith. They also share a common interest in philosophical teachings of Buddhism, Eckart Tolle, and meditation, leading to songs that reflect themes of love and loss, mindfulness, and relinquishing ego.

Deke recorded vocals as a reference guide to inform the melodies and articulation of the arrangements. But soon, both found that those reference guides had a magic of their own and Justin encouraged Deke to keep his voice on the project. To fill in the gaps, Justin and Deke assembled an amazing cast of local Atlanta and Athens musicians to round out the sound … and soon, a unique collection of songs was

The Story You've Been Told is the closing track from Kate Ellis' sophomore album ‘Spirals’ produced by John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Indigo Girls). The song encapsulates the album’s theme of how we go around in circles inside our heads getting lost in the maze of obstacles and pain we encounter in life – but it’s about getting out of these spirals of thought to a more peaceful place.

In Kate's words about this song: "We carry around stories about who we are, where we come from, what happened to us, and what it means. But it creates a false system of beliefs. The Story You’ve Been Told is about finding your way out of these thoughts that can possess you and memories and feelings that can trap you by realizing that the stories aren't true and can be discarded. It's also about living with another who knows this and wants the feeling to cease. It touches on the conflict that situation creates when one party hopes toward the impossible cause of changing someone other than themselves.

2021 Was A Stellar Year For Canadian Country Recording Artist Justin Fancy. From Releasing His Debut Album, Winning Music NL's Country Artist Of The Year And Rising Star Of The Year, And His First Top 50 Song On The Billboard Canadian Country Radio Charts, There Seems To Be No Stopping The Newfoundland-Based Artist.

Fancy steps up to the plate in a big way by delivering a defini-tive statement on never looking back on his newest single, the upbeat and uplifting “Beauty Queen.”

The first single from his forthcoming sophomore studio record to be released in Spring 2022, “Beauty Queen” sees Fancy take a closer look at a failed relationship. Looking for a new rabbit-hole to dive down? Try hanging out with the visionary, metamorphic spirit of Ethan Gold for a song or a season. The San Francisco-bred, Los Angeles-based global-citizen indie singer/songwriter/director/dharma-dream-scaper has probably experienced some level of heartbreak, joy, contemplation, or angst that you can relate to. And where many of us kick, scream, love, and stuff things down, Mr. Gold turns them into transformative artful expressions. Through personal loss, physical trauma, and both literally and metaphorically toxic living situations (see his Pitchfork and London Times touted, self-produced debut album Songs from a Toxic Apartment) he’s opened his heart through music, and transformed pain into perception.

Right now, Mr. Gold is launching his return to live performances, with solo shows through northern Europe centered around a trilogy of LPs that explore the experience of being a 21st century earthling. The singles featured below come from the first installment, Earth City 1: The Longing.

Gold’s next release, “Storm Coming,” is a moody, dreamlike song that anticipates a future that may be either one of romance or of regret. Dedicated to Gold’s friend and manager the late Irish musician Joe Cassidy, the cascading guitar and Gaelic snares steer us through stages of grief—not only for Gold’s friend but for the fate of our ailing planet. Eventually, the somber denial and sadness give way to distorted guitars shouting anger and reverent martial melodies straining for acceptance. Gold’s understated lyrics balance the natural imagery with self-reflective spiritual inquiry.

Video director Paul Khera, who was photographer and artist for Suede and other Brit Pop bands, chose to heighten the environmental message in the lyric video. His sequence of stately monochrome encounters between the natural and manmade worlds captures the futility of discussions about the global climate, by presenting impactful data points that disappear within seconds, making them unintelligible, like ignored warnings in the midst of the storm of imagery and song. Ultimately we’re left to contemplate Gold’s mournful, final question: “Why did you wait so long?”
