“Jazz elements, funk and soul flavor and an impressive improvisation. -Better For You- is the successful combination of live and electronic music, in which the incomparable and exceptional vocals of -Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez- are just crazy!”

“Джазовые элементы, колорит funk и soul и впечатляющая импровизация. -Better For You- это удачная комбинация живой и электронной музыки, в которой бесподобный и исключительный вокал -Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez- просто сводит с ума!”

-Nagamag.com

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a singer/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a family of musicians, music was Raina’s first language and it runs deep within her veins. Rooted in Jazz and R&B, the songwriter invites us into her unique sonic world with harmonic nuance and lyrical poetry.

Raina’s cross-genre style is built from the bottom up. With improvisation as a starting point for her songs, Raina draws on her emotionality and leans into her perception of the world around, uncovering hidden depths within daily life and articulating personal truth with vulnerability and bravery. Songwriting is her way of processing and understanding life in all its complexity.

Her latest single “Better For You” grapples with the gaze, focusing on the experience of being objectified and the ambiguous response to this reality. The song is most explicitly about sex and the ways in which heterosexual dynamics often prioritize men’s pleasure. “Better For You” highlights the ways in which women contort themselves physically and emotionally to be more desirable. Raina shares, “It also depicts the flip side of this, where we become or can become hooked on being the desired one; the way we come to need it, the way our identity becomes tied to this positioning. This is the ambiguity, the grey.” Drawing on her Latinx heritage, the rhythmic piano phrases, dynamic instrumentation and a grooving rhythm section provide a hypnotic backdrop for Raina’s clear and concise vocals.

The accompanying video is a depiction of different aspects of self and their varied responses to the same encounter. The parallel progression of the character in the orange world untying the ribbons and the character in the yellow world becoming emotionally undone, represents an unraveling, a release from the constraint of the gaze, a coming into her own rawness and vulnerability, co-existing with her strength all at once.

With over 600k streams on Spotify and a budding global audience, RSG has packed rooms at prestigious venues such as Brooklyn Bowl, SOB’s, Rockwood Music Hall, MoMA PS1 and many others. Opening for artists such as Starchild and the New Romantic, Raina has a deep connection to the New York City music scene. She has performed for 3-time Grammy Award winning singer Marc Anthony, who took a strong interest in her music, as well as having had the honor of working with Jazz composer William Parker, performing with him on stage and appearing on his albums.

“Better For You” is the first single to be released off of the upcoming album IF THEY’RE MINE, due spring 2021.

Remy Styrk – The Smell of Burning (Spotify)

“The single -The Smell of Burning is poetry wrapped in a classic piece. Minimalistic orchestral structure, expanding layers of strings and piano.”

“Сингл -The Smell of Burning- это поэзия в обёртке классического произведения. Минималистичная оркестровая структура, расширяющиеся слои струн, сюиты и фортепиано.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with us few words behind his project and source of inspiration about this beautiful track:

"...This is my score to my short film "The Smell of Burning" about finally learning to process my mom's death over a decade later.

ABOUT THE FILM:

“i see my mom everywhere i go, in everything i do, and in everything i want to accomplish, but she is always just out of reach. i am entangled in her memory, and the memories of those she inspired.

my memory of my mom is more of a protective energy than a face. the feeling of her arms, her voice, and her security.”

https://www.instagram.com/remystyrk/

I’m Remy Styrk and I’m a composer and creator. I was born to a homeless heroin addict in Newark, New Jersey in 1999. At the age of 14 months, I was adopted by a couple, the husband, a fashion photographer and wife, a creative director. My parents’ love of the arts helped deepen my curiosity in music and the creation of it. In 2004, we moved to Leawood, KS from our colonial house in Accord, New York. Within months of settling into the new house and state, my mom suddenly passed away due to a brain aneurysm. She was my guiding light.

So here I am, grieving the loss of my mom and growing up in suburban Kansas as predominantly the only black kid in the neighborhood. I played into a character not my own, often choosing isolation. My mom was learning to play the piano in her adulthood and had a Roland Keyboard. I knew as long as I had the keyboard, I was safe. Starting to make melodies on it allowed me to express honest energy.

I've studied at the Grammy Museum, learning from artists such as Matchbox Twenty, Fallout Boy, and Sevendust. I've worked on sound design and music for films, tv shows, and commercials from HBO/Showtime.

I make short films to tell personal stories. These films also double a way to continue to process trauma, learn and educate, and continue to my mom’s memory..."

The Tame and the Wild – We Lost More Than A Battle (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“How many times have we been in trouble, ready to give up, but found the courage to go on instead? We may have lost more than a battle but continue to fight. This is the message of “The Tame and the Wild” via their light and charming Folktronica song.”

-Nagamag.com

This song is about accepting the fate of relationships. When it comes to a end there are always losses on both sides. And even if you’re down and burned to the ground, you’ll eventually get back on your feet, you just have to follow the light. The Tame and the Wild lyrics are like polaroids: snippets of real life situations, moments or feelings, condensed to the length of a song. This is the second of a four-song project called „We Lost More Than A Battle“.

https://www.instagram.com/thetameandthewild

The Tame and the Wild is a nostalgic-indie-folk band around the singer-songwriter duo Seja & Flëpp. Its music drives with vocals exploring human emotions among the natural world, sea and stars, youth and age, resiliency and love, boldness and resignation, honesty and memory. The songs urge one to touch those personal situations that are set in and often so tightly bound to nature. The Tame and the Wild see their influences in the sounds of bands such as Daughter, Angus & Julia Stone, Kodaline, Boy or Feist.

Sun Rain – Moonwalk (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“The sound of a mechanical piano can be compared to the breathing of a person, and the vibration of string as the heartbeat. -Sun Rain- made his composition -Moonwalk- with warm layers of ambience, music that sounds alive! ”

“Звук механического пиано можно сравнить с дыханием человека, а вибрацию его струн за сердцебиение. -Sun Rain- разбавил свою композицию -Moonwalk- тёплыми слоями эмбиента, тем самым сделал её практический живой.”

-Nagamag.com

This song is inspired by an astronauts trip to space. It opens with a slow rise that signifies the anticipation before take off and grows into a wall of sound catapulting the listener gently through the earths atmosphere and into the weightlessness of space. The song is atmospheric and calming with gentle piano at its forefront. 'Moonwalk' is the lead single from the upcoming EP entitled 'Ma'.

Based in Toronto, Ontario the music of Sun Rain is an opportunity for composer/producer Chad Skinner to explore the sounds of modern classical, ambient, and downtempo. The main focus for this project is to create thoughtful music conducive to feelings of contemplative stillness for the calmer moments that life has to offer.

Forest May – All the Time (Spotify)

“Many of us usually suffer from anxiety and are victims of an endless rush. Hopefully there is some nice music to take you back to normal. We suggest this piece with the lovely singing of Forest May and the soothing guitar chords that can cure your soul.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with us few more words behind her project and this song:

"...I have played flute since I was a little girl, played in orchestras, and then in indie bands. I sang large choirs for many years at McGill University. I have been a yoga teacher for 20 years and started Modo Yoga (formerly Moksha Yoga) to help connect peace work with activism. I started writing songs to help people relax in the yoga classes I was teaching. I found that people that had a really hard time being still were able to relax when I sang a song. For years I would just sing a capella, then while teaching in Toronto I started learning guitar as an exchange with an indie musician - he got free yoga, and I got free guitar lessons.

Many years ago while doing an MA in Buddhist Studies with Peter Harvey I wrote this song - Ko-an as a way to share the teaching of self inquiry in yoga classes.

I finally released this song a couple of weeks ago and have been amazed at the response. It has been such a brutal time for everyone that finding ways to relax is so helpful. So - I'm hoping to send this song out as a way to do just that - give people a little break in their day to remember their inner peace, and inner wisdom, always residing, always present.

I'm very inspired by Joni Mitchell. Although I am classically trained in flute (I play primarily bass flute now which is what I played in the band Little Scream for many years), I'm mostly self taught on guitar. I don't know what key I'm playing in on guitar, and I can't just pick up a guitar and play with others the way I can on the flute. It's inspiring to me that Joni also didn't ever know what key she was playing in, and yet her songs are pretty much perfect!

I'm also really influenced by Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and then more indie artists like Joanna Newsom, Blonde Redhead, I loved Fleet Foxes' 1st album,

...Here's part of a post I wrote about the song:

It takes a village to raise a song.

Ten years ago I started a little music project called Forest May. I played a bit in tiny indie rock venues but mostly I played and play these songs to quiet bodies in Savasana. They’re quiet songs. Savasana means corpse pose. It’s a practice in dying - letting go - releasing and relinquishing control and arising from the posture re-born. Either that or it involves planning grocery lists in a prone position - really depends on the day. Ha.

I recorded all of the Forest May bed tracks 7 years ago. Then life happened..."
