Phe R.E.D.S makes his return with new single, “Closer,” featuring fellow Seattle artist Catch24. Released today via H1GHR MUSIC, the R&B number captures the push and pull of a budding relationship. Written to mirror a conversation, “Closer” is the mix of emotions that comes with feeling out a crush and deciding where things stand. While Phe R.E.D.S offers the perspective of someone who is cautious and guarded after previous heartbreak and disappointment, Catch24 voices taking that leap of faith. The track is produced by label mate and close collaborator Cha Cha Malone and it is the teaser to a larger Phe R.E.D.S’ project release that’s in the pipeline for later this year.

Leng Phe, who goes by the stage name of Phe R.E.D.S, is a Cambodian-Chinese American music artist. He is signed to H1GHR MUSIC, an unconventional independent record label that focuses on unique talents from Seoul and Seattle. Discovered by founder Jay Park through Seattle’s local hip hop and break dancing scene, Phe R.E.D.S initially got into music because he didn’t see many who looked like him making music. His name, which is a combination of his surname and an acronym for “remember every dream stolen,” pays homage to his family, who were refugees from Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge. It serves as a reminder to discover one’s dreams and live them out for those who didn’t make it, in addition to striving to break generational curses. “I think I’m unique in the sense that I’m Cambodian-Chinese, signed to a Korean label, and pushing my music in America,” he shared. Since his debut with the single, “Smile,” in 2017, Phe R.E.D.S has released a string of records, including “Love On You” (Prod. GRAY), “Your Hands” (Feat. Jay Park) (Prod. GRAY), “Way 2 You” (Prod. Cha Cha Malone), “ Juice” (Feat. Hoody) (Prod. Mokyo) and “Senseless” (Feat. pH-1) (Prod. WOOGIE). After contributing to H1GHR MUSIC’s critically acclaimed label compilation album, [H1GHR : BLUE TAPE], with his single, “Swing My Way,” Phe R.E.D.S has taken time off during Covid to focus on personal wellness. In between spending time with family and friends, he has been pursuing his other lifelong dream, pilot training. Invigorated, he said “Closer” makes for a strong return. “It’s like I’ve lived a little bit of life and I can take this experience and put it into a sonic medium for people to listen to,” Phe R.E.D.S said. The single marks a new chapter and leads up to a larger project, to be released later this year. Stay tuned for more news from Phe R.E.D.S.

GIVVEN – Losing Colours (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“"Givven" present their fresh single, balancing between Downtempo and Commercial sound. The artists have done great work on vocals and this can be spotted directly. 3D effects, unpredictable sound shifting and a slight taste of acoustic instrumentation, increase the whole production level.”

Downtempo pop trio GIVVEN's single, 'Losing Colours', out today via Bias Beach Records.

https://lnk.to/GIVVEN-LosingColours

International trio GIVVEN has released their latest single, ‘Losing Colours’ on the 10th of February. The single is the title track for their upcoming audiovisual EP which will be released on the 24th of March via Bias Beach Records. The EP will feature three unique songs with music videos shot in the beautiful landscapes of Iceland, the first of which, ‘Taking On Water’, was already released and accompanied by a gloomy blue-tinted video. One-third of the trio is Adrian Held, part of the renowned Klangkarussell duo. GIVVEN released their hit debut single, ‘Ghostkeeper’ with Klangkarussell in early 2020 which has reached over 6,6 million views to date, followed by several more singles which would collect over 50 million plays across platforms with support across a wide variety of international publications and radio stations.

The trio is comprised of Adrian Held who is from Austria and based in Berlin, Germany, Jordan Haller who is also from Austria and currently based in Toronto, Canada and Nikodem Milewski who is from Poland and based in Vienna. Nikodem Milewski is also responsible for mixing and mastering the EP and has previously worked with the likes of Robin Schulz and Gryffin, amongst others.

In the early stages of the GIVVEN project, the band used the likes of Jai Paul for inspiration however, more recently they’ve begun to also turn to the works of Bon Iver and James Blake. In turn, their own texturally rich sound will find itself at home next to the laidback likes of Chet Faker, Son Lux and James Blake.

The trio take lush textures and paint them against a backdrop of grief, finding ways to layer the metaphorically monochromatic grey emotion against a rolling bassline and vocal echoing remnants. Acoustic elements lend a gentle tone while the spacey, soaring choruses convey the raw pain found within the lyrics.

Speaking of the single, GIVVEN tell us: "We're incredibly proud of ‘Losing Colours’. From the writing to production, it all took months to dial in and get perfect but we think you can really feel the time and love we put into this one when you listen to the track. Every little detail in lyrics and melody and sound design was meticulously thought out and dialled in. For the vocal production, I was inspired by a song called "Stories" by "Refs" and how they automated the formant shifting of their vocals in the second verse. I thought that was such a cool way to play with vocal delivery so I took the concept and built on it a little and brought that to the verses of ‘Losing Colours’ to give the vocals a new way to twist and turn and kind of keep the listener off-balance."

After a monumental 2021 for the sensational Zimbabwean singer, FRYA (pronounced Fre-ya) is ready to share her new hit single ‘Changes’, which accompanies the release of debut album ‘Balance’.

Tipped for major success by iconic international platforms including GQ, who recently interviewed Frya and identified her as a ‘vocal powerhouse’, the Zimbabwean born singer and songwriter is quickly establishing herself as an international star. Prior to the release of ‘Balance’, her debut body of work, 4 of Frya’s tracks were hand-picked for the soundtrack of Netflix hit series ‘Blood & Water’, all of which feature on the album. As an emerging artist, this is a monumental feat and one which can be attributed to both her music and character. Whilst her colourful life experience, emotion and feelings lend to the empowering, versatile and powerful soundscape that her music delivers, it is also her eloquence and fierce determination that open a world of intrigue in to discovering Frya’s world. Describing her sound as “The modern African woman: Versatile, powerful, bold”, it is clear why the world of music, style and culture are gravitating towards her with features across Notion Magazine, Earmilk and many more already scratching the surface of what is to be found from an artist like Frya.

Unveiling the melodic masterpiece, ‘Changes’ comes courtesy of world-renowned producer ‘Mr Kamera’ and creates the perfect template for FRYA’s soulful, soothing vocals to shine. Choosing a poignant and stripped back approach, in comparison to previous musical versions of FRYA that we’ve heard, the instrumental stands out with breath-taking piano chords and epic synths that crescendos as the song develops. Fuelled with FRYA’s emotion and exceptional talent at turning it in to words, the heart wrenching lyrics delve into the deep changes that are inevitable when it comes to love and loss. Adding a deeper understanding to the inspiration behind the record, FRYA explained “Changes is a song that’s very dear to my heart because it was inspired by my mother, Juliet. I wanted a song that expressed my pain…honestly, but also expressed a realisation that loss of any kind is simply love persevering.” FRYA goes on to say “When the album pre-order went live in September, I received so many messages on Instagram from people in different parts of the world. I connected with people who had experienced loss during the pandemic and even before that. It’s humbling to know that I’m helping other people feel and release emotion the same way the song helped me. It also made me realise how powerful my intention was when i wrote the song.”

As FRYA continues to build upon the momentum that she garnered last year, she shares her powerful album ‘Balance’. This project includes a variety of differing sonic styles that all merge to create an unforgettable debut. With songs such as Changes, Back It Up, Chandelier and Calculate already creating a cult-following, after featuring heavily on the soundtrack for ‘Blood and Water’, her captivating allure knows no bounds. Showcasing her versatility, FRYA delivers soul-stirring ballads in tracks like ‘For You’ and ‘Changes’, whilst in tracks like ‘Fire Fire’ and ‘BDE’ she demonstrates a party centric, reggaeton sound. Her debut project sums up the passionate singers’ approach to music, as she strives to create the perfect synergy. In her own words, FRYA concludes: “the album is a perfect balance of who i am: tough, sassy, soft, bold, vulnerable and the music expresses that. All my different sides working together to create a ‘Balance’".
