Georgia Cécile – Bittersweet (out on Warner/ADA now)

Taken from the top 3 selling album ‘Only The Lover Sings’: https://ada.lnk.to/Georgia-Cecile

One of Jazz’s hottest new prospects, singer/songwriter Georgia Cécile is building a reputation as one of the UK’s one to watch talents. Off the back of a whirlwind couple of months which has seen the Scottish artist release her debut album to critical acclaim and support Gregory Porter on four of his shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall, she’s now set to release her latest single taken from the album.

Showcasing her long-term songwriting partnership with award-winning pianist/composer Euan Stevenson, ‘Bittersweet’ is an emotive hypnotic song that explores the tensions of a volatile yet deeply passionate romantic relationship. Lyrically, the song uses the dark, vast ocean as a metaphor for the hazards of love as Georgia laments “Lost in reeds, we drift with the tide”. The song deploys rich cinematic strings and a mesmeric piano riff that emulates the ebb and flow of the tide, the lush instrumentation framing Cécile’s supple vocals, the poetic lyricism and modal melodies always the focal point.

Tipped as ‘One To Watch’ by BBC Introducing and Jazz FM, Cécile’s debut album “Only The Lover Sings”, released in September, topped the Official UK Jazz Album charts at No.3 and has been championed by the likes of Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter in recent weeks. The album, which is enjoying its 7th week in the top 30 is influenced by the likes of Nancy Wilson and Stevie Wonder, whilst Cécile also sites contemporaries like; Melody Gardot and Celeste as inspiration for her sound. Tracks from the album have been featured in major playlists at Spotify, Apple and Amazon and has been nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2021 Scottish Jazz Awards.

‘Bittersweet’ follows other singles from the project including; ‘Come Summertime’, ‘He Knew How To Love’ and ‘Always Be Right’ – which have picked up plenty of media support ranging from BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing and Jazz FM to The Independent and Wonderland Magazine. Also this year, Georgia marked International Women’s Day by performing live for the BBC’s Jazz Nights show and she was included in Jazzwise’s ‘Women In Jazz’ feature that day.

Cécile’s UK 2021 album tour includes some of her biggest shows to date: the opening Gala for the prestigious London Jazz Festival at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre with the Guy Barker Orchestra, her sold out debut at the infamous Ronnie Scotts, and Edinburgh’s famous Queen’s Hall which will be her official album launch concert.

“Light Jazz composition, which we want to compare with a gust of a warm, summer breeze. Walk along this velvet sound. Music which dips us into the atmosphere of the artist's imagination and can set free from any negative thoughts.”

“Лёгкая джазовая композиция, которую так и хочется сравнить с порывом тёплого, летнего ветерка. Прогулка по набережной в сопровождение бархатного звучания. Музыка, которая окунает нас в атмосферу воображения автора и полностью освобождает от любых негативных мыслей.”

Radamés y Pelé is a song written by the great maestro Tom Jobim for his last album, to render homage to this two geniuses – and friends of his: the composer Radames Gnatalli and the soccer player Pelé.

This mixture between choro and bossa-nova is the first release of the project Jobiniando, and was handled by 3 exponents of the new Brazilian Jazz:

Livio Almeida (sax tenor) has a master’s degree in composition at the Brooklyn College of New York and plays with great names of the American jazz scene, such as the Grammy award winning pianist Arturo O’Farril, Ari Hoening, Helio Alves and Romero Lubambo.

Rodrigo Bezerra (guitar) is one of the most prolific guitar players and composers of his generation. Having recorded 6 albums as a leader, he can easily combine jazz and brazilian music, and have played with artists such as Ellen Oléria and Carlos Malta.

Rodrigo Balduino (bass) is member of the Esdras Nogueira Quartet. He has shared the stage with names like Bocato and Dominguinhos and has recently produced the new album of Ramiro Pinheiro, released with the jazz label Fresh Sounds.

FUTURENOT continues to drum up the excitement for their debut record Greatest Hits with the release of their third single, “Supernova” featuring Seattle-based MC Moe Betta now available on Color Red. Led by horn mavericks Jason Cressey (True Loves, Monophonics) and Peter Daniel (45th St Brass), the band is rounded out by fellow trailblazers in the Seattle music scene Tim Kennedy (Big Tooth, keyboards), David McGraw (True Loves, drums), Cole Schuster (big bad thoughts, guitar), and Mark Hunter (The Dip, bass). Tonight, the band will celebrate the release of “Supernova” with a hometown performance at Drunky Two Shoes BBQ in Seattle with support from Jaws of Brooklyn and DJ Abe Beeson.

"Supernova" is the densest track on the forthcoming album Greatest Hits. Originally written by Jason, the song started with a simple bass line that evolved into all of the smaller pieces that make up this vibe machine you hear today. Like its title implies, this track is exploding with power and illumination. Massive pocket, deep bass, driving lyrics delivered by a veteran emcee, crispy guitar, otherworldly synth sounds, soaring horn melodies, peaks, and valleys, 'Supernova' takes you on a journey that has something for everyone. The track was the first of three songs the group wrote in collaboration with Moe Betta and one of the newer additions in their repertoire.

https://color-red.com/

Cressey and Daniel looked at the pandemic and their newfound time away from the public performances as an opportunity to hunker down and produce the cinematic, jazz-inspired, hip-hop crossover music they had been crafting together over the past several years. The album title seems like an oddity for a brand new group releasing their debut LP, but as the group explained in a feature piece with Abe Beeson of KNKX’s ‘The New Cool’ it “represents the ‘greatest’ moments from several dozen musical ideas they've been working through even before FUTURENOT was formed.” The album embodies an eclectic musical palette as it incorporates elements of “Theme from Shaft”-like anthems, vibey cinematic soundscapes, and conscious, yet lighthearted hip-hop impressions that appeal to fans of high-profile cross-over projects like Roy Hargrove's ‘The RH Factor’, Robert Glasper’s ‘Black Radio’ and crate diggers mining for old instrumental soul 45s alike. It’s vintage-inspired music realized through a modern lens.

This track was made to connect with anyone who has found themselves in a pattern of subconsciously choosing the wrong intimate partners. Even though we feel magnetised towards these characters and we truly see their inner beauty, it may not be enough for a successful relationship and can often lead to heart break.

The Heavyweights Brass Band, Joel Visentin – Sweet Pauly’s Boogaloo – song by The Heavyweights Brass Band, Joel Visentin | Spotify (Spotify)

“There are compositions that act as a clock bomb. It worths listening to them. Your pulse becomes faster, any clouds over your head are vanishing, the legs ask for a dance and then a stunning explosion happens! Bright and very positive jazz improvisation, which instantly trembles not only the spirit, but also the body.”

“Есть композиции, которые выступают в роли часовой бомбы. Стоит только начать их слушать, пульс учащается, тучи над головой расступаются, ноги сами просятся в пляс и потом раздаётся оглушающий взрыв! Яркая и очень позитивная джазовая импровизация, которая моментально взбодрит не только дух, но и тело! ”

Invoking a scene like a ‘60s beach video, Sweet Pauly’s Boogaloo gets you up and moving. Get your shimmy and mashed potato ready and groove with the Heavyweights on this energetic tune. Featuring Joel Visentin on organ, Sweet Pauly’s Boogaloo shows the Heavyweights in fine form.

https://linktr.ee/heavyweightsbb

From Paul Metcalfe of the Heavyweights Brass Band:

Sweet Pauly has become my nickname. Tom, our tuba player, always says “Sweet Pauly Metcalfe” when we see each other again. So, I thought I’d write a song about it. It’s upbeat as I tend to talk too fast.
We recorded this on the 2nd recording day and this was the first song we recorded with Joel on the organ in the studio. The addition of Joel really added energy to the room as well. It’s also the song that I feel reminds me of the ‘before times’ the most. I think it’s because this song especially shows the performance energy of playing together that was obviously missing during the lockdown. I remember listening to it a few months into the stay-at-home order and thinking, oh yeah, that’s what it felt like.
