Matthew Steven Whitaker – 4th of July (Spotify)

“Music as nothing else in this world absorbs all that surrounds us. In such works where guitars are so naturally and harmoniously revealed, the singer's voice and the good atmosphere of Neofolk, create a certain and unforgettable mood.”

“Музыка как ничто другое в этом мире впитывает в себя всё то, что окружает нас. Подобные произведения, в которых так естественно и гармонично раскрываются гитары, искренний голос вокалиста и добрая атмосфера neofolk, создают определённое и незабываемое настроение.”

Artist shared few words about this song:

"This is me channeling extreme heartbreak into a song. I went through a breakup on the 4th of July. After a year or so with only the verses, I wrote the chorus while going through another tragic breakup. Sad songs seem to come about easier than happy ones. I tend to think it’s because music is a great outlet to channel our sadness. Yet, happiness needs no outlet." - Matthew Steven Whitaker

Jasper Sloan Yip – Blushing Autumn (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“Life has a main cycle which follows nature. “Jasper Sloan Yip” captures the spirit of Autumn in this magnificent single. Soft Rock sound, based on acoustic instruments in a mix with warm singing. Highly artistic result, which can attract almost everyone.”

-Nagamag.com

Jasper Sloan Yip’s latest offering is as moody as a rainy day in his hometown of Vancouver. The atmospheric double EP is full of ethereal harmonies and resonant strings while Yip tackles grief, heartbreak, and inevitable endings, all pinned to downbeat languid rhythms.

As with all endings comes new beginnings, and within this sense of struggle are edges of hope. Yip summarizes the album as “a meditation on learning to live with the death process,” as well as the birth of new life and a new chapter – specifically, Fatherhood.

The new double EP, Strange Calm / Blushing Autumn emerged from the liminal period after the Strange Calm sessions at the Noise Floor had been cut short by COVID. In the midst of isolation, Yip recalls how the second EP came to be.

“I felt that what we had made was finished, but also that there was more to say. So with nothing written and not much to go on other than a desire to create, I committed myself to recording a second EP at Afterlife Studio in Vancouver with producer and longtime collaborator John Raham (Destroyer, Tanya Tagaq, Frazey Ford). Almost immediately after doing this, my wife and I learned we were going to be parents the following summer, and from that point on there was nothing else to write about. What resulted was Blushing Autumn: four quiet songs about the anticipation of new life.”

The next challenge was how to go about making collaborative music in isolation. In the weeks leading up to the sessions, Vancouver’s COVID numbers were trending in the wrong direction, depriving Jasper and the band of an opportunity to workshop the material. Rather than fret, the band decided to lean into the circumstances, inviting cameras into the studio to capture whatever happened under the guidance of filmmaker Lester Lyons Hookham of C’est La Vid Productions. “That was an exercise in trust,” says Yip. “I was already nervous about recording untested songs, but we decided to embrace the opportunity for spontaneity in the hopes we’d capture something special on film, and I think we did.”

Jasper has hinted at a much larger film project still in the works for 2022. For the time being though, he is sharing footage of the sessions as a music video for “Blushing Autumn”, showing the band in situ, joyfully creating together in-studio again after a long separation.

Slam Band and Sam – Black Hole (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“When six artists work together in a song, the result cannot be dissapointing! Find your favourite Soft Rock sounds mixed together in a song that can attract like magnet in a very effective way. Let the instrumental notes feed your imagination and relax.”

-Nagamag.com

Slam Band & Sam’s newest single sees the band taking a big step forward when the world around them seems to be spinning more out of control than ever. It’s called Black Hole, and it was initially inspired by NASA’s groundbreaking black hole photos in April 2019; however, singer/lyricist Adam Vasko sees it now as a functioning parable for hard times – for when your circumstances suck you in and make positivity harder and harder to exude.

It’s a step forward for Pittsburgh’s Slam Band in more ways than one. They’ve now introduced keyboardist Dave Carrera into the band – a change that’s caused a noticeable, fiery upheaval in their sound. His synth, Rhodes, and organ work adds inimitable textural layers rarely heard within the pantheon of East Coast jazz and blues-rock, and “Black Hole” is no exception, featuring cascading, intergalactic synth noises that fill post-chorus pauses like a cosmic fermata.

The song is more experimental than their past work, too, incorporating ever more brass and slap bass than before as the backing vocals trickle in and out in soft “oohs” behind Vasko’s raucous celestial deliberations. A closer listen to the lyrics unshrouds a newly distinct brand of introspection, examining important choices in the face of hardships. What does it mean to choose kindness? Too choose to keep moving when it feels like you’re paralyzed? To choose to keep your head up?

The band has been through some hard times, collectively and individually, and it leaks (perhaps unconsciously) into the song. Interpersonal turmoil, family members getting sick, loss, and grief – it’s all there, but, despite this “Black Hole” is relentlessly energetic; a call for listeners to hang in there and to shrug off the negatives whenever possible.

Rook Monroe – Dandelion (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Rook Monroe's vocals abound with their own unique charm, and the musical structure of Californialand plunges headlong into the light atmosphere of Indie Pop. Piano sounds, acoustic guitar riffs and bass drums provide the basic rhythm of Rook Monroe songs.”

“Вокал Rook Monroe изобилует своим, неповторимым шармом, а музыкальная структура альбома Californialand окунает с головой в лёгкую атмосферу Indie Pop. Звуки пиано, рифы акустические гитары и барабаны с басом обеспечивают основной ритм песен Rook Monroe.”

"Dandelion is about not letting your dreams die. Not being afraid to fly. Leaving your baggage on the ground and letting life take you where it will." - Rook

http://www.instagram.com/rookmonroe

Rook Monroe's debut EP, Californialand, and its titular single, set the stage for the narrative arc of a rolling stone leaving a place he must leave in the past, to find a destination he can't define. Californialand finds Rook at an intersection of confidence and confusion, as much concerned with leaving lies behind as with heading towards one.

Produced with his good friends Trackside (Selena Gomez, BabyJake, Khamari), the production duo with whom he built his nostalgic sonic identity, the self-written project was crafted in LA as part of a yearlong process of musical discovery. The closing track Say Goodbye To My Children was created with super producer Brendan O'Brien (Grammy Producer of the Year, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan), who played a great role in helping find the overall sound.

Rook's first three singles garnered immediate love with editorial placement on Spotify's New Music Friday and Fresh Finds, Tidal's Pop: Rising, and Apple Music's Wake Me Up. A successful songwriter in his own right, having penned Rihanna's critically acclaimed 'Desperado' - and more singles for artists ranging wide, from Jeremih to The Chainsmokers - he summons all his influences into a rock influenced package for his passion project.
