Slater Hogan and John Larner are best known for their work behind the turntables, but the pair have earned a large international audience for their House Music productions, which routinely pop up on the playlists of the genre’s best DJs. With over 100 releases under their belt, their tracks have been featured on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix as well as compilations for Ministry of Sound and Fabric Night Club. After an eight-year hiatus, the duo return with a funky house gem that’s primed for the dancefloor.
Rolling into action with a funked-out groove and traditional House beats, the duo let off a classy consortium of guitar licks, horns, delicate keys and a supple dose of soulful vocals that ring out an upbeat tune for good vibes all around. The low end is primarily shouldered by the bending bass notes that take care of the sub frequency warmth, whilst the rhythm and groove provides the timing for a busy melodic content. ‘Moonlight’ perfectly balances that hybrid space where electronic drum machines and acoustic instrumentation meet in the middle ground to create that distinctive funky house flavour that never grows tiresome over the decades.
Trends and sub-genres come and go in House music year by year, but whatever the current hype sounds like – there’s no such thing as a House music scene with no room and love for a solid funky record that harks back to the natural roots of this boundless genre.
‘Moonlight’ is out now via Guesthouse Music and can be purchased and streamed on all good digital music platforms.
