TAKEN FROM THE UPCOMING ALBUM ‘OAN KIM & THE DIRTY JAZZ’

Mambo is the latest single from Oan Kim’s upcoming album ‘Oan Kim & the Dirty Jazz’. Inspired by the likes of Archie Shepp and Charles Lloyd, Oan’s inimitable jazz saxophone style is neatly entwined in this mysterious and minimal track.

The single follows on from the first release of the album Wong Kar Why, which features French musician Edward Perraud. The album was produced by Oan himself in his home studio in Paris, with Oan playing saxophone and guitar throughout. On Mambo, he explains ‘as with most of this album I wanted to mix different genres. It all started with the guitar and bass line alla Nick Cave or Timber Timbre. This bass line really sets a particular mood of subdued tension, that I wanted to do a jazz saxophone track on.’

Also singing on the track, Oan added ‘the lyrics describe a compulsive liar enjoying the joy and laughter that his lies provoke’.

‘I called it Mambo because it reminds me of music from the Mambo era and I liked the connotations, but it’s clearly not a mambo per se’.

Oan’s compelling sound palette follows from studies at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Bill Evans Piano Academy, whilst also being fascinated by contemporary music and the indie scene in which he played for a number of years with electro-rock duo Chinese Army and rock band Film Noir.

Bringing together his musical and artistic influences into a melting pot of creativity, Oan’s passion for music and filmmaking is evident with the mesmerizing music video for Mambo. Featuring two contemporary dancers, the video showcases the ‘dynamics of seduction within a dance number’.

Inspired by a mix of Pina Bausch and Fred Astaire, the video aims to show ‘where a couple is gaging each other, getting closer, pushing back, pulling closer, embracing, controlling the other, or falling into each other’s arms’, whilst also keeping the urban settings of dance similar to in the film Pina by Wim Wenders.

The dance is based on these ‘push/pull dynamics’, borrowing elements of ballroom dancing that match the retro elements of the music.

Mambo, the second single from the upcoming album ‘Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz’, is available now on all major platforms.

Leila Milki – Fall Asleep (Video)

Categories: Jazz, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“”Leila Milki” has combined her deep sensual voice with Neoclassic instrumentation, creating a romantic sense to her listeners. The concept in “Fall Asleep” is full of mystery… it feeds your imagination and calls you to explore its Cinematic character.”

-Nagamag.com

“Fall Asleep” plays out like an orchestral dreamscape, a hazy lullaby…exploring femininity and vulnerability in the face of abuse and peace-keeping. It showcases my vocal & classical-piano performance, along with an unfurling string quartet. It’s meditative, romantic, and mysterious, with dark-meets-light and Arab-fusion influences.

This brand new music video was a remote collaboration from Los Angeles to Toronto, capturing the dance between the familiar, and the pull towards something greater. It’s a terrifying limbo, but all the more worthwhile: daring to indulge those glimmers of freedom beyond our daydreams, when we’ve been taught to place the world’s comfort over our own.

Through this cinematic ballad, my hope is to champion visibility for fellow first-generation daughters of immigrants whose dual-identity limbo often intensifies our experience of early adulthood.

After supporting Gregory Porter at The Royal Albert Hall, GEORGIA CÉCILE is set to share her hypnotic new single ‘BITTERSWEET’

Georgia Cécile – Bittersweet (out on Warner/ADA now)

Taken from the top 3 selling album ‘Only The Lover Sings’: https://ada.lnk.to/Georgia-Cecile

One of Jazz’s hottest new prospects, singer/songwriter Georgia Cécile is building a reputation as one of the UK’s one to watch talents. Off the back of a whirlwind couple of months which has seen the Scottish artist release her debut album to critical acclaim and support Gregory Porter on four of his shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall, she’s now set to release her latest single taken from the album.

Showcasing her long-term songwriting partnership with award-winning pianist/composer Euan Stevenson, ‘Bittersweet’ is an emotive hypnotic song that explores the tensions of a volatile yet deeply passionate romantic relationship. Lyrically, the song uses the dark, vast ocean as a metaphor for the hazards of love as Georgia laments “Lost in reeds, we drift with the tide”. The song deploys rich cinematic strings and a mesmeric piano riff that emulates the ebb and flow of the tide, the lush instrumentation framing Cécile’s supple vocals, the poetic lyricism and modal melodies always the focal point.

Tipped as ‘One To Watch’ by BBC Introducing and Jazz FM, Cécile’s debut album “Only The Lover Sings”, released in September, topped the Official UK Jazz Album charts at No.3 and has been championed by the likes of Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter in recent weeks. The album, which is enjoying its 7th week in the top 30 is influenced by the likes of Nancy Wilson and Stevie Wonder, whilst Cécile also sites contemporaries like; Melody Gardot and Celeste as inspiration for her sound. Tracks from the album have been featured in major playlists at Spotify, Apple and Amazon and has been nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2021 Scottish Jazz Awards.

‘Bittersweet’ follows other singles from the project including; ‘Come Summertime’, ‘He Knew How To Love’ and ‘Always Be Right’ – which have picked up plenty of media support ranging from BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing and Jazz FM to The Independent and Wonderland Magazine. Also this year, Georgia marked International Women’s Day by performing live for the BBC’s Jazz Nights show and she was included in Jazzwise’s ‘Women In Jazz’ feature that day.

Cécile’s UK 2021 album tour includes some of her biggest shows to date: the opening Gala for the prestigious London Jazz Festival at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre with the Guy Barker Orchestra, her sold out debut at the infamous Ronnie Scotts, and Edinburgh’s famous Queen’s Hall which will be her official album launch concert.

“What kind of emotions can result from music when you listen to the improvisation of live, wind instruments? Your soul feels rejoicing, all negative emotions are retreating and everything flourishes. All these and many more are hidden in this magnificent jazz composition.”
