Artist said about this song:

"As I recorded my classical album Perfect Symphony, my grampa, who's an executive producer on this project, urged me to include some of his all-time favorite standards (in addition to Amapola and Besame now streamable as well). Now these are among my favorites and among the top the wishlist I receive when I perform at venues with this type of ambience."

Oan Kim – Agony

Categories: Jazz, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“The Bass and mellow hi hat take us in. His voice carries across the chords supported by complex rhythms and trumpet additions. Clever, clean, and yet so dirty, we dig. It speaks to us with the darkness of a mysterious moonrise. ”

Oan Kim releases debut album ‘Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz’

‘Every now and again something comes through that opens a musical window that was previously closed to you, and Oan Kim‘s ‘Mambo’ fits firmly into the latter camp’ – Joyzine

Fusing together his different musical influences, Oan Kim takes us on a journey of stylistic exploration with his new album Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz. The former Film Noir and Chinese Army members’ new direction is jazzier and more experimental, whilst nodding to his past so far in contemporary classical music and electro rock. Oan explains ‘ It was a deliberate decision to give the jazz saxophone a front position on what would otherwise be an indie music album’.

Writing, recording and producing the record in his home studio in Paris, the multifaceted musician and filmmaker’s DIY approach allowed the tracks to evolve freely ‘without ever knowing where they would take me, operating almost in a vacuum of space and time gave me a lot of freedom’.

‘Pop music will never have that miraculous improvised flair of a good jazz solo, while jazz rarely has the enthralling efficacy of pop music. But who said music had to be as polarized as politics? So I wanted to bring together the best of both worlds.’

From the memorable motifs of ‘Agony’ to the atmospheric noisy sound beds heard in ‘Smoking Gun’, and free flowing jazz saxophone of ‘Quintet’, Oan’s music feels assured yet honest, imaginative, boldly creative and daring. Also contributing to the album are acclaimed French jazz musicians Edward Perraud, featuring on The Judge and Wong Kar Why, and Nicolas Folmer playing trumpet on Quintet, Symphony for The Lost At Sea, and Fuzzy Landscape.

Throughout the album, Kim takes influence from a range of artists including but not limited to Kurt Vile, Stravinsky, and James Holden, whilst taking note from classic jazz artists such as Miles Davis. On his style, Kim explains he puts himself ‘somewhere between Pharoah Sanders and Radiohead’.

Such influences can be heard throughout the album, with an array of different sounds and styles established. The latest single from the album ‘Agony’, inspired by Cold War Kids, features a catchy ostinato with the piano neatly interplaying throughout. Further along the album tracks such as Thelonious are more atmospheric, with intricate details and noises, and an emotive ambience with delicate vocals to match. The track, titled referring to his son’s second name (a homage to the great Thelonious Monk) is described by Kim as ‘like a lullaby’.

Having also worked as a photographer and filmmaker, receiving awards such as Swiss Life 4 Hands Award, Silver Horn of the Krakow Film Festival, Emerging Documentary Filmmaker at DMZ festival and more, Kim also takes inspiration from films throughout the album. Reflecting on his writing process, he explains ‘Hitchcock used to say: once you’re finished with the screenplay you can write the dialogues. I feel the same way about songwriting. Themes of each song come out of the music itself towards the end of the song writing process’.

With a visually driven imagination, film references to Wong Kar Wai, Fight Club, and Naked Lunch emerge on the album. The first two singles from the project Wong Kar Why and Mambo also followed with music videos directed and filmed by himself. The video for Wong Kar Why? A documentary short described as a chronicle of a romance, features candid shots of his wife Katherine that have been taken between 2016 to 2021 in various locations including Paris, Seoul, New York and Marseille, described by Kim as a ‘video of a portrait of the person I met and fell in love with over the years’.

A melting pot of sounds and influences, Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz is sure to set Oan Kim as one of the most exciting talents to emerge on the jazz scene.

Gianni Brezzo – Il Sole

Categories: Audio, Jazz, The Latest|Tags: , , , |

“The subtle spaced-out intro takes us to the right place. The drums and the horn slowly pick up like fresh rain evaporating off the cool Earth. The background swells with unknown noises and the flute takes us away, climaxing with the strings. Yet all sounds so natural and correct. ”

Gianni Brezzo - the Cologne-based jazz affiliated project led by producer, multi-instrumentalist and musical maestro Marvin Horsch - inaugurates his 2022 with the stunning single "Il Sole".

The track is a perfect sonic voyage that encapsulates the growth of Gianni's sound. Subtle, yet lush layers of synths, horns, strings, keys and a strong, beat-driven percussion all ebb and flow together, bringing to mind the finest Library Themes of Piero Umiliani, Sven Wunder, Janko Nilovic and others.

Accompanying the track is a gorgeous video put together by Jakarta label mainstay Robert Winter and the DIE OTTOS crew which rides a visual wave around Marvin's relationship to Italian culture. Footage is derived from Marvin's now-annual visit to see his grandmother.

Following on the heels of Gianni's 2020 EP "The Awakening," the single "Il Sole" is the first single from his upcoming full-length LP - an absolute knockout - so keep your eyes and ears peeled! Announcing Friday, March 4th.

“Прекрасная открывающая, заглавная тема к биографическому кинофильму -The Duke-, отправляющая нас в далёкие 1960-ые годы. Позитивная, насыщенная действием музыка, авторы которой являются настоящими инженерами импровизации и колорита звуковой магии!”

Forenzics x Washington – Unlikely Friend (feat. Washington) (Video)

Categories: Audio, Jazz, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“"Unlikely Friend" is one of those works that don't require adaptation, as it's pure music without unnecessary embellishments. The energy of Jazz flows like a warm stream, penetrating into the most secret corners of the human soul and leaving a bright mark there.”

“Это одно из тех произведений, которые не требуют адаптации, это — чистая, без лишних на то прикрас музыка. Энергетика джаза льётся тёплым потоком, проникая в самые потайные уголки человеческой души, оставляя там своей яркий след.”

-Nagamag.com

"New Zealand’s Split Enz disbanded in 1984, but numerous reunions, classical collaborations and re-imaginings have always pulled former members – Neil Finn and Tim Finn among them – back into its orbit. Nothing, however, has been as musically ambitious as Forenzics, Tim and Enz keyboard player Eddie Rayner’s deep delve into the bands earliest days. Taking what the pair refer to as “shades” from tracks such as Walking Down the Road and Matinee Idyll (129) from their 1976, Phil Manzanera – produced LP Second Thoughts, and the later, should have been a hit Give It A Whirl, Finn and Rayner rebuild entirely new songs, alongside seven actual entirely new songs....

Quinn Sternberg – June (Spotify)

“The breath of wind instruments, the light rustle of percussion and the huge abundance of feelings that pour through the speakers. Find out an immersive effect indescribable in words. An authentic emotional euphoria, which reflects "Quinn Sternberg" sincere love for music.”

“Дыхание духовых инструментов, лёгкий шелест перкуссий и огромное изобилие чувств, которые льются сквозь динамики. Непередаваемый словами эффект погружения. Настоящая эмоциональная эфория, в которой отражается искренняя любовь авторов к музыке.”

-Nagamag.com

The second single from Cicada Songs, the sublime “June” (out Feb 18), best illustrates Sternberg’s departure from the traditional soloist vs. band structure of most jazz ensembles. “I just told everyone in the band, like, no one’s the soloist, we’re just playing,” notes the composer. Indeed, it’s hard to hear any one instrument take the fore in “June”. It’s very much a sum of all parts, with Quinn’s bass interjecting melodic fragments under interweaving lines tossed between Sam’s saxophone and Charlie’s guitar, with echoes of all in the bell tones coaxed from the Rhodes piano by Oscar and cleverly underpinned by the dexterous Peter Varnado’s drumming. Named for Quinn’s dog, “June” evokes images of a dog running through a field in a peaceful doggy dream. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure scene where you can pick a musical line to hang with, take in the ensemble sound as a whole, or just lie back and dream yourself.

Shanu – Senker shel (Spotify)

“Beautiful lyrical composition based on a leisurely narration. The variety of live instruments and soft vocal execution is also attractive for your ears. It leaves a pleasant aftertaste which can improve your bad mood.”

“Красивая лирическая композиция, построенная на неторопливом повествовании, в которой звучат разнообразие живых инструментов и мягкий, с особой глубиной исполнения вокал. Приятное послевкусие, отличное дополнение к вашему хорошему настроению.”

Chuvash ethno-jazz, rhythm and blues and fusion in the new Shanu album "Taran var".

The Shanu band presents their first full-length album "Taran var" (in Chuvash means "Deep ravine") of 8 tracks recorded in 2020-2021. It intertwined melodic lines with technical riffs, jazz harmonic progression with folk motives. There is a place for soft bossa nova and punk-rock-level expression.

The album contains arrangements of Chuvash folk songs and the group's own compositions. In the canvas of the album, you can hear elements of different world cultures and a rethinking of folk themes. So, the archaic song “Taran var”, forgotten by the people, sounded in the traditions of swing, where the main musical and expressive means is the rhythm, which was originally laid down in the song itself. In "Senker shel" ("Blue Shawl") one can feel the mutual interweaving of the Tatar and Chuvash cultures. It sounds like a lullaby, but this is not the song that a mother would sing to her child, but rather a lullaby for an adult who is sad about the transience of life. There is a place in the album for light, as if inspired by the summer wind, songs. "Atar" ("Let's go"). The track, arranged in the style of rhythm and blues, urges not to forget about fun and dancing in the monotony of everyday work. "Urapa" (translated as "Cart"), despite the classical violin introduction, is reborn into a jazz composition, breaking the rhythms with complex time signatures.

The album is available on all music platforms.
