“A delightful midtempo gem polished to perfection. Very groovy lyrics that captivate and draw in. A feelgood track that will surely be on repeat for many trying to elevate their mood. ”

It's a german song about a girl I met a while ago. She reminds me of the famous pop star Shakira. We only met once, but just in the few minutes we got to know each other, there was this kind of tense feeling of "love". We never met again after this day, but maybe we will. So this song is about her. It was produced by me, lyrics by me and mix mastered by me. It has a catchy hook and a very chill vibe.

Alex Dunn – Southern Star (Spotify)

“The night comes and it's time to relax. Sit back and choose "Southern Star" for a joyful trip among some softly vibrating guitar chords. Follow the singer's expressive voice and say goodbye to your everyday stressful situations!”

-Nagamag.com

Before returning to Seattle to pursue music, rising Americana folk artist Alex Dunn spent much of the past 15 years working and living on boats as a commercial salmon fisherman in Southeast Alaska. Now back in Seattle and coming up on the release of his sophomore LP Southern Star, Dunn has encapsulated his experiences at sea in the album’s title track out via Color Red on September 17, 2021.

“Southern Star” is an oceanic folk song that carries the rhythms of the sea while detailing the arduous yet dreamy nature of living aboard a small wooden fishing vessel. Much of Dunn’s life was often ebbing and flowing, dictated by the seasonal nature of the fish themselves—it was only natural for him to compose an Americana homage that reflects this uniquely aquatic existence. Dunn enlisted Bryant Moore (True Loves) as his co-producer and the two captured the reminiscence of long, hard days toiling upon the sea and nights spent below deck, lulled by the water slapping against the hull, the creaking wood expanding and contracting as the boat heaved up and down.

Dunn collaborated with his good friend and renowned multimedia artist Elena Stonaker on a music video to accompany the track and re-create imagery of a dream-like reality where one floats through rugged waterscapes filled with wild creatures and the experiences of a particular, untamed solitude.

“The video for ‘Southern Star’ showcases Elena’s signature style of creating soft and beautiful, almost child-like worlds, while at the same time evoking the darkness that often lies beneath the surface,” says Dunn. “I wrote many songs while living and working aboard commercial fishing vessels and the video details the numerous creatures and seascapes that filled this wild existence while focusing on the power of dreams—for they are the connections to a promising future. In this case, a future symbolized by the guiding light of a ‘Southern Star.’”

Southern Star is set for release in fall 2021 on Color Red, a music discovery platform founded by Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds that is also home of fellow Seattle artists Polyrhythmics, True Loves, West Seattle Soul/The Pulsations, and more. The record was tracked and mixed by Robb Davidson of Avast Recording Co. and mastered by Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound.

The Lovepools – Island Of My Own (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Blogwave, The Latest|Tags: , , , |

“"The Lovepools" have released another Synthpop dynamite, to keep us active and interested in old good sound. The Summer spirit is still here and those funky loops can hit directly in our brain. Are you ready to dive in the cool waters of a sunny island? Just let your imagination follow this sound!”

-Nagamag.com

"Island Of My Own" is a summery pop-rock song by The Lovepools which features a bright production driven by an evolving synth riff, 80s drum loops, and funky synth-bass runs sounding in the territory of Prince and Michael Jackson. The instrumental is spearheaded by an embellished vocal performance by lead singer Anthony Shea, who sings of beaches, storms and isolation.

The Lovepools are no strangers to musical inspiration from video games and this energetic single from them is no exception. Singer, Anthony Shea attributes much of the song's lyrical inspiration from the gaming title: "Stranded Deep" which is an ocean survival game involving a plane crash near a series of deserted islands. The single's artwork is also a direct inspiration from the graphics and visuals the game offers. One night while playing the game, Anthony began to wonder what it would truly be like to attempt survival on a deserted island. Questions of isolation, civilization and moral philosophy began to present themselves to Anthony who quickly transmuted these ideas into song form which quickly became "Island Of My Own".

Island Of My Own was written by Anthony Shea and completely produced, recorded and mixed in Anthony's bedroom with Aria Cruz lending a hand as co-producer. The band used "24K Gold" by Bruno Mars as their mixing guide-track and Anthony finished the production and mix of the song on the 50th mix. Jorge Espinosa of Tropic Culture Studios retakes his role of mastering engineer which now marks his fourth completed master for the band.

The Lovepools new single, "Island Of My Own" will be released worldwide on all digital platforms on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021.

Lagartijeando, Khalil Mounji – Mano de Fatima (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, The Latest, World Music|Tags: , , , , , , |

“Welcome to the world of rhythm in this organic roots inspired sound journey. Blended with a smooth midtempo beat that inspires one to travel the mystical worlds of ethnic sounds. ”

-Nagamag.com

Lagartijeando returns to Wonderwheel with the second taste of his upcoming album, “Mano de Fatima.” Maintaining a focus on fusing traditional sounds with forward-facing, electronic production, this single sees the Argentinian turn toward Morocco and its peoples’ deep cultural histories for influence. Specifically, “Mano de Fatima” features Gnawa artist Khalil Mounji on vocals and guembri (aka sintir, the three-stringed, skin-covered lute used in Gnawa music). Mounji’s melismatic voice carries hypnotic qualities over Lagartijeando’s driving beat, forming a sound that is at once meditative and exciting; it is a fascinating meeting of two worlds that invariably compliment each other, from the southern tip of the Americas, to the northwestern corner of Africa.

Lagartijeando is the name of producer, musician and DJ Mati Zundel. Strongly influenced by his travels through Latin America, Mati's signature psychedelic dance tracks latch onto everything from traditional folk sounds from the Bolivian altiplano to the jungle beats of Brazil. Mati hypnotically fuses his traditional influences (with an emphasis on shaman chant and charango loops) with contemporary electronic beats, creating a sound that once left NPR speechless.

His album is due out on Wonderwheel Recordings at the end of October.
