Black Caviar puts a cheeky spin on hustling for money with his new track “Collect Check” on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak. Featuring smooth, velvety vocals by EMIDA, this house gem opens with groovy melodies that gently meld into a deep, minimal bassline that feels right at home both on the dance floor or when listening at home. “The songwriting process was spurred from a period of financial instability. It led me to write about wanting to hustle out of that situation and aspire to a more opulent lifestyle. The lyrics’ collect cheque – run it back’ are about getting paid but still wanting more because It’s never enough. Ending with ‘run it forward’ – straight to the bank. It was a fun song to write because money can be quite a taboo subject. But with this track, I wanted to make it cheeky, sassy and cool.” – EMIDA

“I had a best friend that I would refer to as my longest relationship. We spent our 20’s partying and weeping all over New York’s lesbian dance floors. It was exactly how your 20’s should go, including how abruptly it all seems to end. There was so much buried beneath our friendship, so when I moved away and started to know and see myself more clearly I really couldn’t avoid our disjointed roots. Last year was particularly hard, as it was for literally everyone, but it also gave me a lot of time to sit and stew and work things out and be mad in ways I never gave myself the grace to be. One night when I got near the end of that rope it was about 2 in the morning and I just needed to do something with all the energy. I started playing these very simple chords and this sweet melody formed and turned into “Palm Trees”. “‘Angels Pray’ came from a place of longing, specifically longing for an escape. it’s that inexplicable desire to run out the nearest exit and leave everything behind in search of your higher personal truth. it’s the need for a bird’s eye view. When we find ourselves in the midst of chaos, it is often very difficult to view our circumstances from a larger perspective. The narrator of this song is searching for solace, perhaps in a new place, or perhaps in another person,” Grassi says.

The core motif of the piano solo piece is the imitation of the Turkish folk music instrument Saz. Kovalenko herself is a great admirer of the Turkish composer Say. In front of 15 cameras and with a light show staged especially for the performance, she stages “Black Earth” as never before. The 25-year-old pianist impresses with a lot of feeling and great musicality. The recording is part of the second episode “Classic meets Electro” from the concert film series “WeLive on Tour”.
