The Rose Petals – Military Man (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“The fresh Country sound that you need to listen, is out now. Leading acoustic guitar chords bring harmony in your soul and welcome the Spring sense. Very notable singing and overall result that you'll remember for a long time.”

-Nagamag.com

The Rose Petals, fronted by songwriting partners Peter Donovan and Elijah Ocean, take off their rose-colored glasses in favor of a historical lens on the folk rock "Military Man," the latest release from the band's debut album American Grenadine.

Donovan says the song was written about the Eisenhower era and the false notion that there was ever a time when everyone was living the good life.

"American Grenadine is an album about American legends and tall tales, specifically those involving our Presidents and First Ladies. Most of these stories are inspired by actual events. But, over time, the details become tailored and exaggerated to the point of mythology - their subjects commemorated as our de facto American gods," says Donavan. "'Military Man' was written about General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the myth of the 1950s. The Eisenhower era is often remembered as a time of great prosperity. But in reality, not everybody was enjoying the good life. One in four Americans was living in poverty. However, after fleeing to the suburbs (via a brand new Interstate Highway System), the flourishing middle class was able to largely ignore the growing urban decay. Today, we usually think about the picket fences and the two-car garages. We wax poetic about the 'good old days.' We find the past much easier to digest through rose-colored glasses."

American Grenadine, the debut record from Los Angeles pop-rock band The Rose Petals, has been over a dozen years and thousands of miles in the making. The group’s songwriting duo, Peter Donovan (All the Real Girls) and Elijah Ocean (Rolling Stone named his 2018 single, “Down This Road,” one of its top 10 best country and Americana songs of the week) first met in 2008, but it wasn’t until Donovan embarked on a cross-country tour of U.S. Presidents’ graves in 2016 that The Rose Petals came to fruition. On that trip, Donovan and Ocean wrote over 20 songs, 11 of which comprise the group’s debut record, American Grenadine. Using jangly guitars, sparkly tambourines, and tantalizing harmonies, the album tells the unseen stories of 11 U.S. presidents and their wives, from Warren G. Harding’s postmortem scandals (“The Kids All Sent Their Pennies”) to Dolley Madison saving irreplaceable valuables like a copy of the Declaration of Independence and a painting of George Washington when the British came to attack the White House (“Chesapeake Leopard”). Far from a political statement, though, the songs on American Grenadine are not intended to be a celebration or an admonishment of their subjects. They’re stories about life, love, power, and death. They’re snapshots of threads in the American tapestry, as seen through the eyes of our very fallible American presidents. Ultimately, American Grenadine, through crisp layers of guitar and emotive vocal lines reminiscent of both R.E.M. and Gin Blossoms, proves that these powerful men — these seeming American gods — were just as imperfectly human as the rest of us

GOLDHOPE – You & I (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“Are you a social person or you prefer to walk alone? A song that gives emphasis to the benefits of a good company in our life. Soulful lyrics and elegant singing with alterantive electronic soundscapes. The hope we need to overcome obstacles, to keep going on and on.”

-Nagamag.com

You & I was written about the battle we often feel within ourselves, those unrelenting anxieties that can feel so alien and confusing to who we really are. It lives inside a part of your mind you don’t really understand, that doesn’t serve to help you in any way but thrives on making itself known at the most inconvenient of times, without invitation. This song is about facing that voice in your head, calling it out and realising that it does not define or control you, and knowing that you can break free from it.

GOLDHOPE are an ethereal alt-pop duo from North London comprising of members Zelah Van-Gowler and Elliot Neale. Encapsulating a distinctive blend of moody, raw and electronic soundscapes with soulful vocals and a focus on sultry, introspective lyrics, there is an all-encompassing range of human emotion and feeling to be found within the music. Prominent influences include BANKS, London Grammar and Sharon Van Etten.

The pair met whilst studying at university, with Zelah a keen writer and solo artist, and Elliot a budding lead guitarist and producer, and, having experimented with different sounds and projects of their own over the years, including their previous joint project under the name ZELAH, the two are now further refining their identity as collaborative artists in 2021 under their new name GOLDHOPE.

They are set to kickstart the year with their sophomore EP ‘Divided’ due for release in May, in the hope to build upon their previous successes in 2020 which saw them support Asgier at Shepherds Bush Empire back in February, and their debut EP ‘I’ receiving pick up from BBC Introducing in Cambridgeshire, CLASH mag and Spotify’s Alt.Pop and New Pop UK playlists.

Sophie Hutchings – Love & Keep (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“Delicate composition -Love & Keep- from the eponymous single. Like a bunch of white flowers that shatters into our wounds, healing them. Beautiful classic sound from the charming -Sophie Hutchings-.”

“Нежнейшая композиция -Love & Keep- с одноимённого сингла словно гроздью белого винограда рассыпается на наши раны, заживляя каждую из них. Прекрасное классическое произведение от очаровательной -Sophie Hutchings-.”

-Nagamag.com

Sophie Hutchings is an Australian composer who flourishes in an outdoor lifestyle. She embraces and thrives in both the calm and sometimes chaotic aspects of nature. Sophie is slowly working towards the release of her Love & Keep EP. The EP brings tranquillity into an uncertain space and looks at the value life and friendships can bring no matter what you are facing. The two segments released so far came in the form of the softly nostalgic injection, Elysian Days and Not Alone. Both hold similar qualities of appreciation and connection. The third injection, also named Love & Keep, nods in solidarity to world sleep day. As an insomniac, Sophie embraces the calm that her music expresses. As she’s learnt more and more about her insomnia, Sophie utilise this routine it to aid her nighttime rituals.

"I guess it's just allowing time to contemplate, reflect and breathe, to free us of extra anxiety to what has already been brought upon us and to not feel alone in that"

Instead of leaning towards the (arguably) traditional outlets of a teenager, Sophie grew up drawing on the mindful, meditative benefits of the ocean and the environment around her. It came naturally to Sophie to weave elements of this medicinal effect through her work. When Sophie wasn’t riding the waves, or absorbing the changing scenes of the horizon, Sophie was thrown into her Father’s vast jazz collection or her older brothers’ love of heavy indie rock.

Although creating, crafting and tweaking her music comes naturally, Sophie prefers to work internally, immersing herself in sound, rather than launching herself into the world of the stage. Her music has been described by The Guardian as holding “an intimate contemplative quality; sometimes melancholic, often with an exhilarating beauty.” Having amassed over 80 million streams on Spotify alone, Sophie has crafted her trademark sound and has collected accolades that include a play on Jorja Smith’s Tearjerker podcast as well as support from 6 Music, Radio 1’s Chillest show in the UK and ABC in her home country, Australia.

"Though it initially felt like a challenge, once I got going the experience became unique doing something opposite to the routine of others. It was peaceful, like a moment in time had stopped and I was documenting that moment."

Love & Keep is a body of work that exposes a profound self-discovery journey that analyses connection, embracing the unpredictable, sometimes volatile, nature of the world, and how sleep is fundamentally intertwined in everything we do. Recorded in the dead of night, this six-track EP looks at the sometimes expanse of sleep as a quiet, reflective beauty, through the unique lens of the insomniac, Sophie. Sophie’s delivery holds a reminiscent feeling, a longing for the support of your loved ones, rather than another soulless, endless, scroll through the social universe.

Gilligan Moss – Special Thing (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, House, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Gilligan Moss deliver a really "special thing". Original House vibe with some disco elements. Prototype ideas carefully presented and catchy title for the majority of listeners outhere.”

-Nagamag.com

“Special Thing,” was written as an ode to our French predecessors - robots and monoliths alike. There’s something deeply hypnotic about a filtered vocal loop and chord progression, but it can sometimes feel like trying to bottle lightning. Simple songs are often the hardest, and in true collaborative fashion it’s a tune that Ben rescued from Evan’s trash pile - we’re glad he did. Grab yourself an ice cold ‘Pfizer and head down to the beach to listen to this one.

Jaap Mol Interview on Nagamag

.

Nagamag:
What are the genres that describe better your music style?

Jaap Mol:
My main genre is neo classical. But I tend to expand it to ambient electronic music with some beats where I feel they add something to the music.

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Jaap Mol:
I started taking classical piano lessons when I was about 6 years old. I don't exactly remember why it were piano lessons and not another instrument, but I kept playing for years. I even played church organ for while, but discovered I'm way more inspired by a piano.
When I was around 15 years old, I discovered punk bands and that was all I wanted to play from that point on. So I bought a bass guitar, started a band and quit my piano lessons when I was 18. Since then I played in all kinds of bands, mostly pop punk, but also bands inspired on those really cool emo core bands from the zeros which I still love.

But when I finished my study, that musical environment dried up and so did the bands. I went back to my keys, sang in a a capella group and worked on some music on my own but never really got back to it; life happened and I got a job as a teacher. Back then I thought I'd never do any serious music at all ever again.

But then a friend of mine started a band and needed someone to play keys and that's how I got back into music. It worked out really well and I started playing in bands again, but this time no punk and bass guitars, but keys in pop, pop-rock and electro pop bands.

Meanwhile I discovered that my love for pop music and my interest in quiet piano and string music could be mixed pretty good and I started experimenting with what turned out to be the neo classical ambient music I create now. But I am always tempted to try new styles and experiment with other genres. Right now, for example, I worked on a live show for which I remixed all my tracks into an ambient electronic hybrid DJ-set.

That's what I love about music the most; I get bored quite easily, but never with music. It's an endless source of inspiration.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Jaap Mol:
I think, funnily enough, that first feeling when I heard a punk track on the radio has been one of the most important moments to spark my music career. I waited for weeks, glued to the radio, to record that one song to tape, because I never heard anything like it. That was a really important moment, because that was when I realised that it was actually possible to create something myself.

Nagamag:
What inspires you to create new music?

Jaap Mol:
Everything I create in music always starts with a sound I love. That can be the sound of a beautiful old piano, something I come up with when tweaking a synth, or just a sample from a plugin in my DAW.
I'm not a very technical player, and at first I saw that as a limitation. But I learned that to be really creative, you have to set boundaries and limitations, and mine forces me to really dive into a sound I love, and create something beautiful from that. I'm embracing that now, and I'm really happy with how it turns out.

Nagamag:
What does your creative process look like?

Jaap Mol:
I like to do a lot by myself. I'm kind of a control freak, so when I didn't find what I wanted to create elsewhere, I wanted to master the whole process. I compose and produce while writing, just like pop records.
Sometimes I ask other studios for help because they have better equipment, but most parts I record at my own place. I like to do the mixing myself as wel, because a lot of mixing happens during the production.

I like to work with concepts for my music, so that's why I prefer to do al the artwork, photography and video's myself as well. To master all theses parts of the creative process takes a long learning curve, but I like to be curious and just love discovering new things to improve. It's an infinite playground.

Nagamag:
Most artists have a favorite song from a different music genre than the one they are producing music for... Which is yours?

Jaap Mol:
Sufjan Stevens "A Little Lost"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which track from a similar artist you admire?

Jaap Mol:
Jon Hopkins "Echo Dissolve"

MV Dusk Crisis – Your life will never be the same (Video)

Categories: Blogwave, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“Unexpected trip to the past with “Mv”! An excellent oportunity for the retro-maniacs, emulating the ’80s synthesizers with inspiration from old video games. Very valuable work that brings back our nostalgic moments.”

-Nagamag.com

ABOUT THE SONG

“Your Life will never be the same” is the first single by Mv based on the cyberpunk retro-futuristic graphic novel DUSK CRISIS. It is based in the sense of hope and dreams in the midst of despairing circumstances, which encourages the listener to face its life like an adventure to live rather than a problem to sort out.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Manuel David Vasquez, also dubbed as Mv among his friends and followers, is a fantastic musician, songwriter, and artist. While he lives in Melbourne, Australia, he was born and lived a significant part of his life in Colombia. Earlier as a child, he learned to play the violin when he was hardly five years old. Later as he grew older, he learned to play guitar and piano as well. Ideally, he mastered these instruments during his teenage years. But he understood the need to transition and that it was a crucial time to bring some significant change in life to make his work known. He decided to pack up and leave Colombia and migrated to Australia .

He is also an avid reader of Sci-Fi and CyberPunk and on a lazy day. Hence, he has recently started working on a Graphic Novel, Dusk Crisis. He has also combined Synthwave music that complements the genre of the novel.

In addition to these hobbies he pursues, Mv likes to travel and visits the historic and landmarks of each country. While touring new countries, he also explores history and culture of the music and observes the contemporary shift in music trends.

Amongst his all-time favorite artists are Gloria Estefan & Miami sound machine, Al Jarreau, Giorgio Moroder, Luis Miguel, Juan Luis Guerra & 440, Vangelis, and Eros Ramazzotti. His modest personality, cheerful demeanor, soul-stirring voice, and creative music assures he has a long way to go, and he will captivate his audiences with his work.

The imaginary of DUSK CRISIS depicts the darkest environment for the main character of the story. Still, he has to endure the pain and frustration in order to accomplish his core purpose in life.
