Doctor Flake – Lockdown
(Spotify)

Jean Marie Leger’s alias Doctor Flake is a project that explores the philosophical and meditative corners of the Electronic music universe. His deep and atmospheric production tendencies are powerful and magnetising to listeners that appreciate the intricacies of this kind of production work. We delve deeper into this new four track collection of his selected works.

Lead track ‘Lockdown’ is a reflective and low-tempo production that flourishes via deep and meditative kick drums as a foundation for a Techno-centric stack of layers in the rhythmic and melodic department. Atmospherics and glossy reverbs full the stereo spectrum and all combined – this makes for a tranquil start to the package.

‘Winterness’ starts life as a heavily processed guitar sound that is thoroughly drenched in reverb and delays to create a padded style backdrop to the pulsing kick drums and brooding bass synths. Progression is the central focus of this track as the tension, suspense and anticipation swells over the length of the production.

Track 3 is ‘Hands’ which again shows off Doctor Flake’s melodic and downtempo aptitudes as we’re treated to a gorgeous array of angelic vocal chants, cloudy percussive melodies, deep and reflective chord transitions and a hypnotic lead that verges on psychedelic. It’s Café Del Mar, Berlin and your favourite place to unwind and destress all rolled into one.

Wrapping up the EP is ‘Volcano’ which delves into a deeper realm of sub bass content with a kick that really hits the insides hard. The percussive elements take a more Techno-edged time and groove pattern to provide a more militant drum section as a foundation. Things get wild when a flurry of pitch-bent wind instruments begin to ring out a droning alarm of a melody to create an otherworldly vibe that fuses acoustic and electronic tones.

It’s a journey that Doctor Flake has purposefully conceptualised with this package. Starting from his Downtempo past and journeying into the future with his sonic explorations with mid and up-tempo Techno, his electronic discoveries are always fresh, thoughtful and very listenable.

Harry Nathan, you – Harriet Tubman?
(Spotify)

This song listes also #1 on Hype Machine (26 April 2020)

Australian producer, singer and songwriter Harry Nathan is back with a saucy late-night groover titled ‘Harriet Tubman?’, featuring Harry’s across the hall neighbour, Hollywood actor Ryan Lee (known for his roles in Goosebumps, Super 8, This is 40)

Harry explains below there’s a goofy and unexpected story around the making of ‘Harriet Tubman?’

“Ryan walks in to my studio one day and starts talking into the mic, not realising I was recording. The first part of this recording ended up in the outro of ‘Fool For Your Love’, from my first EP. It landed perfectly in that spot. “You” continued talking, as if hosting a fictional radio show, when an imaginary Harriet Tubman decided to join us. I genuinely had no idea who Harriet Tubman was, asking ‘Who’s Harry Tubman?’ - to which Ryan replied ‘Underground Railroad Queen’.

My close childhood friend Tass Diakos was in L.A visiting from Sydney, and suggested we turn it into a house vibe. An hour later we were all in our pyjamas sitting on Ryan’s living room floor, building the song on my laptop. Then we finished the production in my studio with my boy Preston (Walker). It fell together so quickly and easily.” – Harry Nathan

Padre Tóxico – Wait for It
(Spotify)

An atmospheric minimal electronica with dreaming arps and soft drums that will hypnotize you in its sound design patterns.

Few words about Padre Tóxico:

Music possesses a quality that can transcend time, that's why it is never too late to follow through on your passion. Padre Tóxico is proving that to everyone with his latest records. He has been a fan of hip-hop since it’s inception and grew up during the golden era with dominant forces and timeless albums dropping left and right. Artists like Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Nas, ATCQ got him interested and sparked a fire so strong that it followed him for decades to come. In more recent times, he had that same wave of excitement strike him when he discovered electronic music from musicians such as Jon Hopkins, Kiasmos, Synkro or Stimming.

Just six months ago is when he had the realization to attempt the creative process himself. While his sound is still developing, he has taken his two loves and produced records with the stylings of both, with EDM tracks like "Rugged” and lofi boom-bap like “Summer in L.A.” showing off his innate diversity. On 3.05.2020 after 6 months of work, Padre Tóxico releases two LP's - electronic "Synesthesia" and hip-hop flavoured "Life supplement".

Runaway – Original Song by Svea Lyon
(Video)

Runaway is a song which total produced and performed from Svea Lyon speaking about of running away with your soul mate with her warm soft vocals that will tickle your ears.

Few words about Svea Lyon:

Had it not been for a man with an American flag eye patch and an acoustic guitar Svea Lyon (Suh-vay-uh) (Lee-own) may have never started singing. Mr. Woody was her first-grade music teacher, and the first person to recognize her innate talent for performing. One day in class he asked for a student to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Since no one else raised their hand Svea broke the silence and started to sing. Mr. Woody told her she had a beautiful voice and to keep on singing.

Fast forward ten years and Svea heads Mr. Woody’s advice by singing every chance she gets. Although it has been some time since she last sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star she continues to write about everything from the sky to clementines. She plays piano and guitar and aims to write a new song every week. Artists like Fiona Apple, Alicia Keys, Stevie Nicks, and Stevie Wonder inspire her. She lives in Los Angeles, with her little sister and mom. Aside from music Svea likes to read, watch the Office, and drink tea with cats.

Altamullan Road – Underwater
(Video)

Gearing up for the release of their mesmerizing debut album due in
the fall of 2020, Altamullan Road, fronted by the sublime voices of
Johanna Kurkela and Johanna Iivanainen already gave us a peek
into their world of wonders with their 1st single “When It’s Time”.

There may be no return after the 2nd, saturnine “Underwater”.
With “Underwater” the supernatural sisters paint a gloomy picture
of a deathwish bittersweetly mixing with hope. A musical canvas
resounding with echoes, the song is sparsely colored with firm,
broad strokes and eerie harmonies. The song weaves an intricate
network of gossamer melodies and submerges the listener in
gothic, melancholic bliss. As light and airy as the singing appears at
the outset, the lyrical message lies clandestine, anticipating just
below the monochrome surface for you to dive in.

“Underwater” is a pensive tide, lying in wait to wash over you.
Altamullan Road is the silent wail of angels becoming the darkness,
the grief of waning memories and the faint flickering of candles in
the dark.

Siv Disa – Fear
(Video)

‘Fear’ is a fascinating look inside Siv Disa’s mind. Produced with friend and collaborator Sam and the Sea, dreamy drum patterns and analog synths phase into a warm, enveloping atmosphere that orbits around introspective lyrics. If you’re not careful the song can lure you into a false sense of security – it’s easy to find yourself comfortably lost in the production, but closer dissection of the lyrics reveal the song’s true, poignant nature. Disa’s writing is deeply personal and therapeutic, with this track inspired by the dissociative and self-critical mindsets that empty connections can push you into, whilst also questioning what causes us to be more authentic: the truth or the fear of it.

On the track, Disa said: “A lot of the questions in ‘Fear’ come up when we’re dealing with a lot of stress and difficult situations, and right now everyone is connected by having to deal with something enormous – I think everyone’s dealing with their own fears in that way.”

‘Fear’ is released alongside a haunting music video, with Disa figured as an ominous presence in a cold, dreary landscape; unclear to the viewer whether she is a threat or is being threatened. Inspired by 70s exploitation movies and found-footage horror films such as The Blair Witch Project, it perfectly encapsulates the uncertainty and eeriness of the track.
