Jonny Glenn – Like Father Like Son (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“A gentle, soulful chord progression that guides the melody and is an accurate mirror of the title and lyrics. Ostensibly a tender love song, Jonny is actually describing being abandoned by his father at a young age, & conveys self-reflective emotions in a bittersweet way. Instrumentally, the song is also a fabulous vehicle for his Hendrix (Little Wing) like guitar work”

Talented Los Angeles newcomer Jonny Glenn is ready to share his most vulnerable offering "Like Father Like Son," the focus track of his debut album, 8, due out next week. The rising, alt-pop artist gets deeply intimate with this new single that shares a piece of his heart and breaks down his walls.

Raised by a single mother in the American South, opportunities at large simply weren't available. Listening to music became his escape; one where anything seemed possible. Pouring his all into his passion, Jonny prepares to set sail with his debut album, aptly titled "8" based on the date December 8th - a powerful day in the cosmos. December 8th is not only Jonny's birth date but the death of the famous astronaut John Glenn (with whom he shares a name) and the assassination of John Lennon - one of his biggest musical influences.

New single "Like Father Like Son" foregoes any superfluous production and rather focuses on the rawness and sincerity in Jonny's voice and lyrics. Accompanied by just a simple yet gorgeous electric guitar, "Like Father Like Son" is Jonny's most honest, impactful, and reflective offering to date.

"My dad left when I was 4 years old," he shares. "Then I grew up. Just my mom and me. It was just the two of us. I'm so thankful to have as strong of a mother as I do. As I've grown into myself and have been taking a deeper dive into myself, I've realized how the trauma of being abandoned affected me.

I grew up always thinking I was more mature than my peers (even though I was the youngest in my grade), or at least had to be. I thought that I was stronger than most. I had become the man of my house at a young age. An 8 year-old 'man.' As a kid, I had no idea how the events of my young life would shape my behavior through adolescence and into becoming a young adult and into my first significant relationships. I made a few mistakes along the way, some of which I thought were similar to those my dad had made and would lead me down a similar path. That scared me.

https://twitter.com/TheJonnyGlenn

This song is about that - not wanting to be like my dad. And not making any of the mistakes he did. As ironic as it sounds, by facing my fears and my past, I've been able to start breaking the cycle of acting unconsciously and have given my true self a chance of rebirth. No longer do I need to react in order to survive. Through this long process, I am starting to learn how to just be. That has been a true blessing and I feel like I am the closest to true happiness that I've ever been."

"8" sees Jonny explore themes from loneliness and heartache to self-discovery and empowerment. Each song is set to alt-pop soundscapes featuring textural elements of R&B, indie-folk, and electronica making it feel both familiar and different at the same time. From his latest release "Runnin'" a private confessional about young love to his newest powerhouse "Like Father Like Son," Jonny shares his most important life experiences throughout this album.

Combining pop with rock influences, often paying homage to childhood idols Elvis, Freddie Mercury, and Nirvana, Jonny's wide range has garnered worldwide praise. His recent releases have amassed over 3 million streams and over 100,000 monthly listeners. His 8 album is bound to position the rising Jonny for success in the years to come.

Estella Dawn Interview on Nagamag

.

Nagamag:
Which are the genres that describe your music style better?

Estella Dawn:
Pop/Indie/Neo Soul/Electronic/Adult alternative are probably the main genres I write in. I've never been particularly worried about sticking to one genre, what I'm feeling and what I've been listening to impacts the music I make on any given day, I like to roll with that, Sometimes it's rock/pop other days it's laid back indie, you might not enjoy every song I've written but there's a wide range of styles so something might just tickle your fancy.

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Estella Dawn:
I began classical piano lessons at the age of 9, picked up the guitar a little later, around 13 and started writing more structured songs at that point. Banging away on the keys or strumming the three guitar chords I knew, it really just grew from there. Now I write in my own studio, using Logic. Recording software has helped me to expand my style and flesh out what I hear in my head. Having the ability to create beats and full song instrumentation has made a huge difference in where my songs are now, I've released 12 original songs in 2020/21.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Estella Dawn:
I can't say that there's any specific moment in my childhood that I can attribute my love of music to, it's something I've always just gravitated to. I used to make up songs from a really young age and I was always just drawn to music related activities. Songwriting has become my way to reflect on and process the world and my experiences within it.

Nagamag:
Do you prefer studio or performing live and why?

Estella Dawn:
I enjoy both! However I am definitely more comfortable in the studio. It's easier to nail a vocal take when I'm not also trying to control my nerves. I've always been a pretty shy gal so I find my throat and voice do funny things when I'm performing live. I just have to work around it when I put my set together, I'll start out with easier songs and save the big belting numbers for later on. That being said, there's truly nothing like being on stage, you feel so close and connected to everyone listening, you also get to set the tone and create a mood. I think there's something incredibly special about live music, ultimately it's an experience shared between the people there that night and the performer. The show will be different, every crowd will react differently, every song will be sung/played a little different, you can't recreate that, it's like a snowflake.

Nagamag:
Who would you consider your main musical influences?

Estella Dawn:
Musically I have always been drawn to songwriters with interesting lyrics, or singers with strong vocal performances. Ultimately songs that make you feel something. I would say I draw inspiration from songwriters like Halsey, Jaymes Young and Dermot Kennedy. I also really love that artists like Billie and
Finneas Eilish created such interesting and original music from their house. That they made every creative decision from the songwriting itself to the production and everything in between is incredibly inspiring. I also really admire artists like Sam Cooke, Etta James, Julie London, Ella Fitzgerald, their songs just hit you in all of the right places. It's timeless music and you can't beat the emotion they pour into their singing.

Nagamag:
Many artists listen to genres that they are not producing music for. Which track is your favorite that is NOT similar to yours?

Estella Dawn:
Redbone "Come and Get Your Love"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which is the track from a similar artist you admire?

Estella Dawn:
Dermot Kennedy ‘Power Over Me’

Dupont Brass – Homecoming (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Jazz, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , |

“-Homecoming- performed by -Dupont Brass- combines elements of Soul music and funk, where pronounced R&B and Hip-Hop draws an unpredictable rhythmic pattern, which makes the composition more energetic and memorable.”

“-Homecoming- в исполнении -Dupont Brass- сочетает в себе элементы Soul-музыки и фанка, где ярко выраженный R&B и Hip-Hop рисует непредсказуемый ритмический рисунок, что делает композицию более энергичной и запоминающейся.”

-Nagamag.com

http://www.dupontbrass.com/

On “Homecoming” DuPont Brass takes us on a trip down memory lane. They set the mood over a bed of mellow, romantic R&B. The music is laced with a sentiment of love and desire - and while the singer is pursuing a long lost lover, he is ultimately looking to recapture so much more than that. The incomparable feeling of youth. The freedom of possibility. And the chance to have it all before we’re too old to enjoy it. Mixing horn ensembles is an art form in and of itself, and the work done here is akin to the Mona Lisa. But unlike Leonardo da Vinci’s work, there is no
doubt that this song will leave a smile on your face. The band brings the song home with a guitar solo that sings out - reminiscent of great R&B solos brought to us by the Isley Brothers. Take a listen and share with a friend - you will surely find that the love is contagious.

https://www.instagram.com/dupontbrass/

DuPont Brass is a unique, soulful, brass ensemble hailing from the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Originally composed of five music majors from Howard University trying to raise money for tuition during the Christmas season, they have now grown to a 8-piece ensemble consisting of brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. Gaining popularity from playing at local Metro stations, DuPont Brass started out professionally playing for weddings, banquets, and other private events in the surrounding area. Thanks to the foundation laid in their earlier years, DuPont Brass has had the opportunity to perform in conjunction with the D.C. Jazz Festival and on the prestigious Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. Consistently touching the hearts of the community with their heartwarming testimony, DuPont Brass has been featured on WPFW's “Live at Five” three times and featured in the Washington Post Newspaper five times. Through their training in both classical and contemporary styles, the young group has developed a sound that mixes varied genres of music, including jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. Their latest release entitled Eclectic Soul is a testament to that sound. Overall, the mission of DuPont Brass is to uplift the spirits of people with their music, not just in the DMV area, but across the world.

Freedust, Sheila Weaver – Bad Move (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Jazz, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Freedust combines funk-soul and trip-hop with prominent jazz motifs. Classic soul vocals like an echo from the distant past. Soul music, bouncy rhythm to re-charge your positive mood.”

“Freedust сочетает в себе funk-soul и trip-hop с ярко выраженными джазовыми мотивами. Классический soul вокал словно эхо из далёкого прошлого. Душевные мелодии, бодрый ритм и заряд позитивного настроения.”

-Nagamag.com

Freedust first became airborne when Daniele Carmosino met singer Lisa Widmark among the creaking Hammonds and weather-beaten Moogs of an antique music equipment store in 2015. With more than just musical influences in common, the pair shared a feel for the music they wanted to create and soon began realising their vision in Daniele’s home studio. Combining their initial inspiration of Swing music of the 1930s and 40s, filtered through their love of pop, jazz, electronica and vintage gear to create a something new yet familiar, timeless. The duo were soon joined by guest singer Sarina Leah from London and the geographical influences of all three Freedusters (Italy, Sweden, UK) combine to form their singular sound .

Their debut EP ‘Jump Up and Down’ is a journey through bouncy beats and dusty breaks, scratched horns and whimsical electronics underpinning catchy melodies and gossamer vocals, for a fresh and playful approach to female-fronted experimental pop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4t0RMWfExg&feature=youtu.be

London-based artist Ashleigh Bankx is the latest singer to emerge from the UK’s resurgent soul/R&B scene, and she’s making a huge statement at the top of the year with the release of “Angel”. The independent artist’s first official release, “Angel” is an impassioned love song that arrives with accompanying Lutch Media-directed visuals to set the mood. Inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Rihanna, as well as music from her Zimbabwean roots, Ashleigh brings a much-revered throwback neo-soul sound of yesteryear, with a unique, modern twist.

“Angel” begins with an empowering voiceover sample from Nina Simone that leads perfectly into the rest of the song. Ashleigh says: “‘Angel’ is about self-liberation, understanding and valuing yourself through past experiences with relationships and society. The song is about black love and centres around the concept of self-love, self-confidence, self-pride and the unity of and journey between two lovers. I want the listener to determine what mood and emotion they feel when they listen to the song.”

“Angel” shines a light firmly on Ashleigh’s impressive lyricism and her emotive, soul-drenched voice, which provides the perfect vessel for her music’s exploration of the love and pain we as people experience in our everyday lives and relationships. With her first release of the year now uncovered and an EP series also in the works, Ashleigh Bankx is set to make a big impact and will surely be one to watch out for in 2021.
