Maria Grönlund – Aureolin (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“In -Aureolin- composition each combination of chords is in place and sound really great. The tone and spacing, as well as the accompaniment have a so beautiful affection on the soul, even before you open the door into the world of harmony.”

“Каждый из аккордов и их сочетание в композиции -Aureolin- на своём месте и звучат просто бесподобно. Тональность и интервалы, а так же аккомпанемент так красиво ложатся на душу, что перед вами открываются двери в мир прекрасной и гармоничной музыки.”

-Nagamag.com

You may know Stockholm’s Maria Gronlund from her weekly live stream ‘Meet Me At The Piano’ on Facebook. Or from her debut album ‘Songs of a Sad Sailor’, which was a Spotify Classical Pick. Or even from her short collection last Autumn called ‘Colors of my Mind: Pt. 1’, which was the first of three releases that will go to make up her next LP ‘Colors of my Mind’. Part 2 of the collection is nearly upon us with three pieces of neo-classical imagination due later this month.

The natural reaction when listening to Maria Gronlund is the finest kind of peace. That’s because in a world where everything is jumbled up and confusing, we need quiet spaces where we can just breath under no duress whatsoever. And that is what this new collection bequeaths upon the listener, the tender ebb and flow of Maria’s playing to iron out furrowed brows. Over three tracks we get to bath in a hushed symphony of piano music that is awash with vitality.

Opening track ‘Aureolin’ (March 9) is like a feather blowing in a warm breeze, a creative arpeggio it appears to take off in seemingly random directions before settling. Or was it just that we didn’t easily get with its momentum and suddenly the calm descends? Whatever occurs there is soothing company in store, which is likely to result in reflection rather than navel gazing and hope rather than self-pity. ‘Aureolin’ provokes us into a continuous feelings probe which can only be good for both the mind and soul. Its presence does become more pronounced as it goes on, to add to the sense of letting it all go to the sound of someone else’s tempo for a change. Hands up who’d like to be taken by the hand and driven to somewhere where it all makes sense, all of us – thought so!

‘Vermillion’ (March 19) is the follow-up track and it truly showcases Maria’s inspiration for her new album, writing and recording music while a painter drew what came to mind organically and in tandem – each inspiring the other, a brush stroke followed by a music note until both an aural and visual picture emerged. In this case there are flights of fancy, short bursts and arcs that colour the scene that will likely form in the listener’s mind. This is probably the liveliest track on the EP, a song with hope as its byword and so tenderly dispatched it can be absorbed with the minimum of effort. ‘Vermillion’ becomes one of those rare compositions that tends to linger in the air long after fadeout.

‘Spring Green’ is the closing number on ‘Colors of the Mind: Pt. 2’ and is due to be released on March 29, which coincides nicely with International Piano Day. And there is no denying that artist and instrument have combined elegantly here, as the spiralling keys consistently reach for ways to keep our attention privy to their pretty patterns. Maria makes it all so effortless and like much of her music gives each piece an energy and a narrative. In this case the theme ties in well with the arrival of nature’s annual rebirth. Of course we can’t hear the hedgerows blooming but ‘Spring Green’ sure offers a soundtrack for watching the subtle changes occur over time.

Though ‘Colors of the Mind: Pt. 2’ is only three tracks long it offers plenty of variety, the absence of anything sombre is refreshing and just what we need to offer a glint of life in the still Covid suppressed world we live in. Maria Gronlund proves to be a composer who not only plays the tunes but also weaves a story that stokes the imagination, but an imagination that has us conjuring the good times rather that resigning to life in the turgid ones.

There will be a ‘Colors of the Mind: Pt. 3’ towards the summer, the jigsaw of pastoral delights finally complete and with it the opportunity to engage with positivity and light when opportunities for doing so have been few and far between so far in 2021. For now these three tracks can be our constant companion, an entity that asks for nothing more than to let it wash all over us and come out the other side feeling renewed.

“-Cure- can be called a model of cinematic ambient and drone. A thick, white mist like atmosphere, a strong, complex melody within the genre. Light touch of despair and wandering alone.”

“-Cure- можно смело назвать образцом кинематографического ambient и drone. Густая, словно белые слои тумана атмосфера, сильная, комплексная мелодия в рамках жанра. Лёгкий налёт отчаяния и блуждающего одиночества.”

“Трек -Introduction (Lull)- с нового альбома -You & I Would Die- словно огромный, невидимый магнит затягивает в свои сети, в которых с каждой секундой растёт напряжение. Чувствуете его? Невообразимое ощущение.”

S. E. Webster is a folk-rock artist born and raised in the deserts of Southern California. S.E.’s music evokes sunsets, sepia tones, and long drives on dusty, far-off roads. With intimate vocals and lush instrumentation, S. E. has cultivated a modern but timeless sound. His music gives voice to feelings of longing and nostalgia for what could have been.

“You & I Would Die” is a 4 song debut EP set for release on February 26th, 2021. The songs trace the arc of a romance destined to end too soon, the victim of circumstance and cross-country moves. As the first chapter of a trilogy, this EP sets the scene and brings the listener along for the ride. The follow-up EP is set to be released in Summer 2021.

S. E. collaborated with producer/composer Erik Groysman (Karmina, Cape Weather, Drunk History) to create a visceral, visually-stimulating experience with the help of mixer Steve Bone (Cape Weather, Mario Jose, Hannah Sumner).

“-Dark Waters- delivers melancholy out of your soul. Loneliness and hopelessness as the main moo and connecting thread in this beautiful cinematic work of the composer -Joshua Carlton-.”

“-Dark Waters- это меланхолия вашей души. Одиночество и безысходность как главная и связующая нить в этой кинематографической работе композитора -Joshua Carlton-.”

This song is part of an album that was written while I was going through the emotions of being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Although sad and melancholic, The music also conveys a sense of hopefulness. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Oregon instrumentalist Joshua Carlton toured the world with post rock band This Patch of Sky for the last decade. This lead him to compose music for television and film such as ‘Brand, a Second Coming’ (a documentary film on actor Russell Brand and his battle with drug addiction), and the Vice channel. He has also been featured in the McDonald’s Ramadan commercial, as well as large brands such as Petco. Joshua’s excited to share his new solo project. “This is an album that I absolutely had to write” he says of 2021 debut ‘Moonlight Under the Black Flag’. Joshua was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in February of 2020 and found solace in purging his emotions through the music he was composing. “This music is truly my heart, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed creating it”.

“Have you ever thought about how often you are happy? -Marcus M-Positive Parker- and his new single -I Choose Happy- will certainly remind you this clear rule; rather than any external circumstances, someone can be unhappy only because of his thoughts. By controlling his thoughts, he achieves his happiness.”

DREAMERS, Big Boi, UPSAHL – Palm Reader (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , |

“The track titled as -Palm Reader- from the homonymous EP can not be perceived as just another job from Trio -Dreamers-. Dynamic and vibrant representative of indie rock, which will certainly stay with you for a long time.”

“Заглавный трек -Palm Reader- с одноимённого EP невозможно воспринимать как просто очередную работу трио -Dreamers-. Динамичный и яркий представитель indie rock, который непременно останется с вами на долгие времена.”

-Nagamag.com

New York, NY, March 5th, 2021: Los Angeles-based alt-rock trio DREAMERS debut their five song EP titled Palm Reader out today on all streaming platforms. The spotlight track “Palm Reader,” is an infectiously catchy love song mixed into a world of modern pseudo-spirituality and features the legendary rapper Big Boi of Outkast and acclaimed alt pop disruptor singer/songwriter UPSAHL.

“‘Palm Reader’ is a song about an LA woman, adorned with all the crystals, sage, tarot cards and sacred intuitions,” explains lead singer Nick Wold. “I was almost poking fun at her when she said she could tell my fortune.. but then I realized while writing the chorus that maybe she can tell my future, since she decides it.

Ever since the early 2000s, Outkast was my favorite hip hop group, and I’ve been having my mind blown by their lyrics and

styles for a long time. The fact that Big Boi is on the track is like a surreal dream for me and connects me to my wide-eyed

earlier self before we ever started the band. Add in the powerhouse energy and voice of UPSAHL - I’m such a fan of these 2 artists and what they brought to our song. ”

The Palm Reader EP is the culmination of the band's hits from 2020 and 2021 and dives deeper into ideas about mortality, gratitude for existence, and the need for knowledge. The projects features standout tracks “Still Not Dead” ft American Teeth and Wes Period, and “True Crime” ft DeathByRomy which speaks about breaking hearts. The EP also includes “Heat Seeker” ft. grandson and a classic Dreamer’s track “Teddy Bear.”

“I think this year of quarantine has been a time of reflection and perspective, of realizing what’s really important,” says Wold. Ultimately it’s been really positive, because I know that I have life and good people in my life, and that's what really matters. This EP is some kind of a twisted diary on the way to that realization. Additionally, it’s been our first stab at branching out and collaborating with other amazing artists that we’re lucky to know.”

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez – Better For You (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Jazz, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Jazz elements, funk and soul flavor and an impressive improvisation. -Better For You- is the successful combination of live and electronic music, in which the incomparable and exceptional vocals of -Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez- are just crazy!”

“Джазовые элементы, колорит funk и soul и впечатляющая импровизация. -Better For You- это удачная комбинация живой и электронной музыки, в которой бесподобный и исключительный вокал -Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez- просто сводит с ума!”

-Nagamag.com

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a singer/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a family of musicians, music was Raina’s first language and it runs deep within her veins. Rooted in Jazz and R&B, the songwriter invites us into her unique sonic world with harmonic nuance and lyrical poetry.

Raina’s cross-genre style is built from the bottom up. With improvisation as a starting point for her songs, Raina draws on her emotionality and leans into her perception of the world around, uncovering hidden depths within daily life and articulating personal truth with vulnerability and bravery. Songwriting is her way of processing and understanding life in all its complexity.

Her latest single “Better For You” grapples with the gaze, focusing on the experience of being objectified and the ambiguous response to this reality. The song is most explicitly about sex and the ways in which heterosexual dynamics often prioritize men’s pleasure. “Better For You” highlights the ways in which women contort themselves physically and emotionally to be more desirable. Raina shares, “It also depicts the flip side of this, where we become or can become hooked on being the desired one; the way we come to need it, the way our identity becomes tied to this positioning. This is the ambiguity, the grey.” Drawing on her Latinx heritage, the rhythmic piano phrases, dynamic instrumentation and a grooving rhythm section provide a hypnotic backdrop for Raina’s clear and concise vocals.

The accompanying video is a depiction of different aspects of self and their varied responses to the same encounter. The parallel progression of the character in the orange world untying the ribbons and the character in the yellow world becoming emotionally undone, represents an unraveling, a release from the constraint of the gaze, a coming into her own rawness and vulnerability, co-existing with her strength all at once.

With over 600k streams on Spotify and a budding global audience, RSG has packed rooms at prestigious venues such as Brooklyn Bowl, SOB’s, Rockwood Music Hall, MoMA PS1 and many others. Opening for artists such as Starchild and the New Romantic, Raina has a deep connection to the New York City music scene. She has performed for 3-time Grammy Award winning singer Marc Anthony, who took a strong interest in her music, as well as having had the honor of working with Jazz composer William Parker, performing with him on stage and appearing on his albums.

“Better For You” is the first single to be released off of the upcoming album IF THEY’RE MINE, due spring 2021.

Remy Styrk – The Smell of Burning (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“The single -The Smell of Burning is poetry wrapped in a classic piece. Minimalistic orchestral structure, expanding layers of strings and piano.”

“Сингл -The Smell of Burning- это поэзия в обёртке классического произведения. Минималистичная оркестровая структура, расширяющиеся слои струн, сюиты и фортепиано.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with us few words behind his project and source of inspiration about this beautiful track:

"...This is my score to my short film "The Smell of Burning" about finally learning to process my mom's death over a decade later.

ABOUT THE FILM:

“i see my mom everywhere i go, in everything i do, and in everything i want to accomplish, but she is always just out of reach. i am entangled in her memory, and the memories of those she inspired.

my memory of my mom is more of a protective energy than a face. the feeling of her arms, her voice, and her security.”

https://www.instagram.com/remystyrk/

I’m Remy Styrk and I’m a composer and creator. I was born to a homeless heroin addict in Newark, New Jersey in 1999. At the age of 14 months, I was adopted by a couple, the husband, a fashion photographer and wife, a creative director. My parents’ love of the arts helped deepen my curiosity in music and the creation of it. In 2004, we moved to Leawood, KS from our colonial house in Accord, New York. Within months of settling into the new house and state, my mom suddenly passed away due to a brain aneurysm. She was my guiding light.

So here I am, grieving the loss of my mom and growing up in suburban Kansas as predominantly the only black kid in the neighborhood. I played into a character not my own, often choosing isolation. My mom was learning to play the piano in her adulthood and had a Roland Keyboard. I knew as long as I had the keyboard, I was safe. Starting to make melodies on it allowed me to express honest energy.

I've studied at the Grammy Museum, learning from artists such as Matchbox Twenty, Fallout Boy, and Sevendust. I've worked on sound design and music for films, tv shows, and commercials from HBO/Showtime.

I make short films to tell personal stories. These films also double a way to continue to process trauma, learn and educate, and continue to my mom’s memory..."
