PKAY – pls call me (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“In "Pls call me", sensitive chords of piano are forming peaceful background melodies. The vocals are also very expressive and seem to come directly from the singer's heart. Characteristic sound which didn't left us unaffected.”

-Nagamag.com

PKAY wrote her debut album alone in a car somewhere on California’s Highway 99. Driving back and forth from the studio in Los Angeles, the 21-year-old indie-pop artist would open her iPhone’s Voice Memos app and start singing; Letters from the 99 was the result. Evoking Taylor Swift and Nina Nesbitt, it’s a haunting collection of heart-on-sleeve stories, recounted by an instantly recognizable vocalist with a clear ear for pop melodies.

Carried by broken chords on keys and slowly building strings, "pls call me" never adds percussion, but there’s a rhythm and a relatability to the chorus that give the song a haunting quality. It may be the strongest work of storytelling on the album – and on an album filled with raw stories, that’s saying something.

Render Ghosts – Keeping My Number (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Blogwave, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“If you prefer colourful music with energetic mood, you should check this bright Synthpop creation. "Render Ghosts" have dynamically entered the scene and their sound can stick out of the ordinary. Just listen and enjoy.”

-Nagamag.com

Render Ghosts (London/Utrecht) are a new trio making effortlessly melodic alternative pop.

Their life-affirming sound brings together three wildly different musical personalities for the first time:

Tamara van Esch is well known in the Netherlands as a singer-songwriter singing in Dutch, and as a multi-instrumentalist in bands such as Jo Goes Hunting, Drive Like Maria and Kim Janssen.

Tom O.C Wilson is a classically-trained composer of chamber pop songs, whose music is described as simultaneously playful, complex and joyous.

Iain Chambers is a sound artist who uses buildings as instruments, famously turning London’s Tower Bridge into a massive resonating chamber. He’s also a founder member of the experimental electronic ensemble, Langham Research Centre.

Render Ghosts debuted in December 2021 with Eye Rhyme, an 80s-tinged anthem introducing their trademark blend of crystalline synths and infectious melodies. It was immediately picked up by Amazing Radio, Fresh on the Net and BBC 6 Music Introducing, and named by blogger Allen Richards as the best debut single of 2021.

The follow-up, Keeping My Number, is if anything even catchier, built around a chorus inspired by the commercial pop the band were listening to while crafting their first album (Dua Lipa, Alex Hosking, Jax Jones).

Lyrically, the song is sassy but bittersweet, with the narrator struggling to make her ex see that their relationship is truly over.

There’s no shortage of legendary stories about songwriting duos: Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, King and Goffin…the list is immense, and each has their own quirks and twists. As the world entered a global pandemic in 2020, a songwriting partnership for a new era began to emerge: Kerenyi/Spears, an artistry partnership between songwriter Justin Kerenyi and producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer Deke Spears.

The duo first teamed up in 2017 when Deke produced Justin’s first solo album, Silent Stars. Kerenyi, a lawyer by trade, always had an affinity for songwriting and had played in an Atlanta area band for nearly a decade. To make his lifelong dream of recording an album a reality, he turned to Deke. The two had previously met through work with the Songs for Kids Foundation, a music mentorship and interactive program organization for kids and young adults with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities.

Deke, an accomplished musician and producer in his own right, had spent nearly a decade performing and recording with the buzz-worthy Atlanta band, Quiet Hounds, when he relocated to a farm in Athens, GA in 2019. There, he began to construct his own studio, Magnetic Recording, from the ground up.

Having bonded over a shared affinity for well-curated music, as the pandemic became a reality, their friendship took on a new flavor. Justin approached Deke with an album concept in 2020 – bringing his songs to life through a variety of Atlanta-based artists and vocalists for a collaborative project.

In this virtual world, the duo worked together by video and email for about a year before having the opportunity to safely collaborate in person. The pair connected over very organic, wholesome aesthetics with inspirations ranging from classic ‘70s artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Jackson Browne; Bob Dylan; and The Beatles, to more modern artists that include Dawes, Ray LaMontagne, Tom Petty, and Elliott Smith. They also share a common interest in philosophical teachings of Buddhism, Eckart Tolle, and meditation, leading to songs that reflect themes of love and loss, mindfulness, and relinquishing ego.

Deke recorded vocals as a reference guide to inform the melodies and articulation of the arrangements. But soon, both found that those reference guides had a magic of their own and Justin encouraged Deke to keep his voice on the project. To fill in the gaps, Justin and Deke assembled an amazing cast of local Atlanta and Athens musicians to round out the sound … and soon, a unique collection of songs was

Kate Ellis – The Story You’ve Been Told (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“its touching and delicate as feathers from the sweetest of birds. The lyrics are deep and have a natural flow to them. A track for ones who seek to be more and to make it through. Its energy is divine, and the artist involved in the instrumental execution are very skilled all around. ”

-Nagamag.com

The Story You've Been Told is the closing track from Kate Ellis' sophomore album ‘Spirals’ produced by John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Indigo Girls). The song encapsulates the album’s theme of how we go around in circles inside our heads getting lost in the maze of obstacles and pain we encounter in life – but it’s about getting out of these spirals of thought to a more peaceful place.

In Kate's words about this song: "We carry around stories about who we are, where we come from, what happened to us, and what it means. But it creates a false system of beliefs. The Story You’ve Been Told is about finding your way out of these thoughts that can possess you and memories and feelings that can trap you by realizing that the stories aren't true and can be discarded. Once we stop seeing our lives through a distorted prism, we are fine."
