Becoming Young’s Brandon Calano grows wiser on exhilarating, epiphanic, and episodic pop album, The Songs I Wrote You

The popular saying goes: People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. There are also those people who saunter into your life for one night, but you spend a lifetime reeling from the connection. For award-winning pop artist Becoming Young (Brandon Calano), one crisp and cool summer Colorado night he met someone who seismically shifted his superficial bro-ish trajectory. The fallout from this millennial fairytale of emotionally reckless romance became his sophomore album, The Songs I Wrote You.

“All of the songs are letters to ‘her.’ The record follows a jovial, funny, turbulent, draining, haunting, and, ultimately, hopeful story about two people who never should have met, but ended up in love,” the Nashville-based artist says with a good-natured laugh.

The eight-song collection was written as the captivating drama played out. The Brandon of the album opener, “Reverie,” isn’t the same Brandon as the closer, “Stand Down.” “I could never have imagined or planned the twists and turns this album takes. It’s one hell of an emotional roller-coaster,” he says.

The listener savoring the salacious saga from the sidelines can immerse themselves in the excitement via the record’s experiential episodic release schedule as a series of singles that begin releasing in January 2021. These one-song installments boast liner notes on the cover artwork—seemingly, the first of its kind—revealing the story behind each song’s lyrics and how every track fits within the overarching narrative arc.

Parallel to chronicling a period of intense growth and introspection, this body of work also marks artistic maturation. This is the album where Brandon defined the Becoming Young aesthetic. It’s a vibe best described as the feel-good folk-pop of Vance Joy and the dark grandeur of Dermot Kennedy, injected with the euphoric pop sensibility of Lauv and the fiery emotionality of Matt Maeson.

Brandon worked with three different producers on The Songs I Wrote You, including Ryan Hadlock (Lumineers, Vance Joy), Austin Shawn (Sony/BMG), and producer John McVey (Yonder Mountain String Band). In addition, Brandon co-produced and produced some of the tracks himself. The Songs I Wrote You was mixed by John O'Mahony (Matt Maeson, Coldplay).

The story goes that in the summer of 2018, at the apex of Brandon’s Feeling Single fury, he threw a welcome-home party for a close friend. She brought along a mysterious and intriguing girl. The new pair didn’t hit it off at the party, but spurred on by alcohol and late-night antics, they kissed in the backseat of their mutual friend’s car.

It was a blurry opening salvo, but the duo clarified their connection the following week with a proper date. The romantic reconnaissance was a success, and Brandon subsequently wrote the folk-pop gem “Reverie.” With emotive keyboard atmospherics, stately string touches, and back-porch acoustic guitar strums, Brandon sings, bursting with joy. One choice redemptive romantic passage is: But I saw the light in her face, the love in her heart and the way she made/One of my darkest days turn to a memory of grace as she kissed me and said, Boy I think you'll be okay.

The drama begins on the second song, “No Strings Attached,” where the weary and reluctant twosome decide to redirect their connection to something of a casual encounter. The song’s chill verses are offset by explosive choruses, reflecting the pent-up energy from sublimating feelings. On the haunting emotional centerpiece, “Addicted,” he shares his forbidden love struggle with rich and sensual low-register vocals. On the very next song, “Silent Words,” Brandon has a powerful moment of clarity, realizing he’s in too deep.

The record concludes with “Stand Down,” a poetic and courageously vulnerable pop track that manages to be moody and anthemic, without being sappy. During the song’s bridge, Brandon sings: Say it now, say it now, won’t you let in, let me in/Say it now, say something now, won’t let in, let me in. Here, he’s at the gates of her heart, boldly confessing his feelings. The camera pans out, and credits roll. We don’t know if there is a happily-ever after resolution, and it’s a little maddening. When prodded, Brandon candidly shared: “I’m already writing the aftermath record. I can’t reveal the title as it gives away the cliffhanger that comes at the end of TSIWY.”

Hold This – Rushil | Abi Sampa (Video)

Categories: Rock, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , |

“There are so many superb elements to this song that it’s difficult to know where to begin, or what to praise first. The multi-lingual vocals are tailored as finely as a Saville Row suite, Rushil’s lead vocal seamlessly blending with the sumptuous vocals of Abi Sampra and the orchestration. The piano and Indian percussion instruments also joining to reach the anthem-like crescendo and exotic fade out. ”

-Nagamag.com

Bursting back onto the scene in 2021 with an exquisitely addictive new single that expertly combines his empowered attitude, bold lyricism, and stunning vocals with an immaculately bright, catchy sound, Rushil is set to take over playlists worldwide with the release of his latest single ‘Hold This’ featuring Abi Sampa. Having recently signed a sync deal with Coca Cola Pakistan and featured on Nitin Sawhney’s new record, Rushil’s new single is as shocking as it is soulful; he’s never been one to hold back when it comes to his music, and ‘Hold This’ reveals the confident performer he’s become over the years.

It’s hard to place Rushil into a box. The London-based singer’s ability to sew subtle strands of his Indian heritage into the melancholic sincerity of his songwriting has set him apart and placed him in an entirely new category of writers.

After spending his early years in India, Rushil grew up in Cyprus where he signed his first record deal at 16. He then went on to study at the University of Oxford which is where he first encountered Indian Classical Music. It was here that Rushil began seeking a sound that could embrace the entirety of his heritage. Drawing on influences such as Bon Iver and Damien Rice, Rushil sought to expand upon their styles by including elements of Indian Classical and Sufi instrumentation.

Gawain and The Green Knight – Fingers (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“Very smooth quality song and original music that you like listening with great interest, again and again. It reserves an unusual experience for those who first come in contact with that kind of music. Magic... not otherwise.”

“Очень ровная по качеству материала и весьма оригинальная музыка, которую слушаешь с большим интересом вновь и вновь. -Fingers- оставляет необычные впечатления для тех слушателей, которые впервые соприкоснулись с подобной музыкой. Магия, не иначе.”

-Nagamag.com

Leading up to the June 11th release of their new EP, A Sleeping Place, Gawain and the Green Knight have released the single, “Fingers.” Filled with allegory and inspired by literature and mythology, the duo calls their sound, “folk for people who like to listen to music while pacing mournfully yet poignantly through the streets, pretending they’re the protagonist in a very beautiful film.” Listen to “Fingers” HERE.

http://smarturl.it/FingersbyGawain

“Fingers” is “a love song for my soon-to-be husband [bandmate Mike O’Malley], simple as that,” says singer/guitarist Alexia Antoniou, and one of her only auto-biographical songs. She found inspiration in an unusual place - on an airplane, when they were unable to get seats together. “I had been reading Madeline Miller’s Song of Achilles and finished it mid-flight and was just completely emotionally devastated. I wasn’t just teary-eyed, I was outright weeping- so much so that the woman next to me took one look at me and started turning up the volume on her little headrest TV,” Antoniou recalls. “I managed to make meaningful eye contact with Mike across the aisle, and with a few gestures of the head, he agreed to meet me near the airplane toilets so I could cry some more on him. ‘Fingers’ was inspired by that whispered conversation.”

O’Malley produced the song with that same intimate, hushed atmosphere. “I wanted to ride the line of all-the-way-in-love and all-the-way-scared. And I wanted Alexia to sound like she was alone in the dark with a torch,” he says. “Sparseness and reverb seemed the order of things - a little Rhodes piano here, a little bowed bass there.”

Inspired by the etymology of the Greek word for cemetery, which simply means “a sleeping place,” the EP sits comfortably in the deep, sometimes dark, parts of the subconscious, arranged in such a way that you remember why life can be so joyful in the first place, its tempo anything but sad. “I think of this EP as a love letter, full of desperate affection, to anyone who has ever been alive and been scared to die,” Antoniou states.

“Death is loud, but it doesn’t mean you were never heard.”

A Sleeping Place will be released on June 11, 2021.

Heavy Heavy Heart | Natalie Gelman | Official Music Video (Video)

Categories: Rock, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“For a song entitled Heavy, Heavy Heart, it’s somewhat confusing that the extremely pleasant, enchanting vocals, whilst managing to pull off a strong sense of loss, also sound joyful? That is until you realise that the song is about the journey of rediscovering yourself after a break up and liking what you see. You also realise how clever & skilful Natalie Gelman is to sound both happy & sad at the same time. ”

-Nagamag.com

https://twitter.com/NatalieGelman

Attraction is inexplicable. It’s pheromonal, quasi-spiritual, physiological and physical. For songwriter-pop artist Natalie Gelman, the pull to music has almost been innate. It has been there since she was an eight-year-old girl with an absent father and an overworked single mother. Back then, she freely roamed the wilds of New York City, stoking the fire of her artistry, spurred on by violin and piano lessons, and her innate singing and songwriting gifts.

The Ojai, California-based artist has aptly titled her milestone release, Moth To The Flame. This is her debut full-length for Blue Élan Records, and it features 11 co-writes with producer Charlie Midnight (Joni Mitchell, Katy Perry) who was an early champion of Natalie’s talents as a singer-songwriter. It has the added distinction of being mixed by Grammy award-winning sound engineer Jason Mariani (Lissie, Mumford & Sons); mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer icon Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, OutKast); and it features a band handpicked-by-Natalie of ace musicians with resumes that include working with such artists as Patty Griffin, Fiona Apple, Brandi Carlile, and more.

https://www.facebook.com/NatalieGelmanMusic/

Moth To The Flame was born out of struggle. Looking to take her career to new heights, Natalie set out to do something different than she had done before, and that meant building an album with precision and direction that would be uncompromising in its execution and creation. This proved to be an arduous task; to record with the team she hand selected meant bending her life to the schedules of many. Long, late hours in the studio; days, weeks, and even months between recording sessions can prove overwhelming to many artists, but Natalie so believed in her vision she refused to settle for anything less than perfection.

The 13-song album represents a rare artistic feat. Moth To The Flame is a sublimely melodic and heartfelt blend of polished production, telepathic musicianship, and finely crafted pop with emotionally raw lyrics and storytelling. “I feel an everlasting draw to music, sometimes at the expense of the rest of my life. Like a moth to a flame, I continue to drive towards it, even when the price is frustration or pain. Sometimes we need to experience adversity to truly appreciate our purpose, and music is that purpose for me” Natalie says.

Natalie’s songwriting recalls sophisticated-but-still-pop tunesmiths such as Jewel, Sara Bareilles, and Jason Mraz. Her songs are subtly lush, detailed with ethereal atmospherics, majestic cello flourishes, chiming electric guitars, stately piano, and layers of dreamy vocals. Throughout her catalog, Natalie exhibits a stunning range as a vocalist, spanning delicately emotive phrasing to powerhouse full-voice singing. Her lyrics are both profoundly spare and poetically incisive, and her autobiographical songwriting boasts a universal resonance.

https://www.instagram.com/nataliegelman

Her latest release, Moth To The Flame, opens with “Photograph,” a potent dose of songwriter-pop with ethereal verses that yield to anthemic choruses. “I wrote ‘Photograph’ about never giving up when the odds are against you; it’s a love song to my audience,” she says.

Other album highlights include “Heavy, Heavy Heart,” “The Answer,” “Better Days,” and “Won’t Matter Anymore.” “Heavy, Heavy Heart” exudes a sweet Americana melancholia with lyrics that are both uplifting and thought-provoking. “This song is about how we can become our own worst enemies or our best friends based on our self-talk. We look around and think we’re the only ones experiencing something, that the growing pains of life are unique to us alone, but many people struggle with the exact same things,” Natalie shares. The empowering but tender track, “The Answer,” features sweetly sensual vocals and atmospheric-pop production. “Better Days” opens with a Motown-y bass hook and then blossoms into balmy, uplifting pop-rock. This track’s feel-good energy is harnessed in its video that promotes connection, inclusion, and unity. “This one really sums up the message of my music and my philosophy on life. I really believe in not giving up — especially on yourself. We’re at our best when we work together and lean on each other” Natalie says.

The concluding track, “Won’t Matter Anymore,” is a country-tinged song boasting soulful harmonica lines and the album’s most stirring vocal performance. Here, Natalie’s chorus lyrics are bravely honest. She sings: But everyone’s got something to hide/Some get convicted before they are tried/All the stupid mistakes you did or didn’t make won’t matter anymore/Everyone’s got some secrets to tell/mine just happen to be yours as well/And it won’t matter anymore, it won’t matter anymore. Natalie reveals: “We all have secrets. We may never know the truth, but we have to choose what is important. In this case, having the relationship is more important than having the pain of the past and never having a real answer.”

Natalie grew up surrounded by classical music. She studied violin, and attended the famed LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts where she studied under educators from Juilliard, and was featured as an opera singer. During this time, Natalie performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and other esteemed venues.

A chance finding of a guitar behind a friend’s couch changed everything. The instrument became an extension of her body as she took guitar lessons, and nurtured her songwriting gifts. “I used to fall asleep with my guitar,” she recalls with a good-natured laugh. “When I woke up, I was always so grateful I didn’t toss and turn and break it.”

Natalie earned a degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Miami. Upon graduating college, she set out on her path as a songwriter, releasing her debut album, and embarking on her rollerblade tour back home to NYC. There, she became a fixture in the gritty subways—a circuit she began to master when she was just 16—and a mainstay at the city’s storied venues. From there, she inspired a sing-along crowd of 17,000 while opening for Bon Jovi on a coveted opening slot she earned from a songwriting contest and beat out 120 subway performers to open and sing a duet with Wyclef Jean.

To date, Natalie has released a self-titled album, an EP, and four singles. Select press praise includes Huffington Post raving Natalie is “sunny and soulful”; The New York Post gushing she is “simply terrific”; PopMatters concluding “all listeners will enjoy how Gelman pours out her soul”; and Billboard weighing in “fan reaction confirmed that her intimate songs play well in an arena setting.” Natalie earned a feature on the front page of the NY Times; and interview features in LA Weekly and Songwriting Magazine. Natalie’s most recent single, “2020,” has been added to Apple Music’s coveted “Hit Reset Playlist,” and has been enthusiastically reviewed.

Natalie looked to build on those early successes by creating an album that would define her as an artist, but it would ultimately take years of concerted effort before Natalie would find Moth To The Flame in its fully-realized form. She is quick to admit the toll the arduous process had on her well-being. Many opportunities to take easier paths presented themselves. In greater numbers were the chances to throw in the towel completely. The obstacles, the personal challenges of taking care of an ailing family member, the professional challenges in the pursuit of perfection, Natalie willed her way through for the sake of the music. “The truth is, giving up has never felt like a real option” Natalie exclaims. “Music is a life force for me, I’ll find a stage, street corner, or subway platform to perform on, no matter what stands in my way.”

Her never-say-die work ethic has paid off for Moth To The Flame as Natalie is now supported by a full team, and she’s issued her most assured artistic statement to date. “I have put years into this album. While working on it, I got married, lost my mom to Alzheimer’s, and had the opportunity to open for major artists,” she says. “The songs on the album were written before going through those things, but the pain and passion are in the performances and recordings. These songs have taught me to focus on the love you can give and the integrity of which you live your life.”

In -Pressure Points- the singer's charming meditative voice floats into the clouds and lift us up too. Also presenting an emotional atmosphere and kaleidoscope with rich variety of sound colours.”

Песня -Pressure Points- словно плавает и витает в облаках, очаровывая своим медитативным голосом. Обволакивающая слушателя атмосфера, эмоциональный калейдоскоп из разнообразия звуковых оттенков и тональностей.”

-Nagamag.com

Returning with her third single of the year, alt-pop prodigy ELUNIA unveils the emotive single "Pressure Points," co-produced with multi-million streamed producer JMAC (Haux, Luz, Matilda Mann, Rosie Carney). The singer-songwriter-producer, praised by EARMILK as "[leaving] you hanging off each word," released her debut "Borderlines" and second single "Soak" in early 2021, which received notable acclaim from music blogs and accumulated over 20,000 streams on Spotify alone. Guided by moody piano, the nuanced production of new record "Pressure Points" ebbs and flows to create a dreamy landscape. Alongside shimmering guitar, haunting synths, and dynamic percussion, ELUNIA’s ethereal voice soars as she delivers intimate, poetic lyricism.

Speaking about her new single, ELUNIA says: “I wrote ‘Pressure Points’ about idolizing someone as the hope I was looking for through a struggle with mental health, and the fear of losing them. I felt like I was finally seen for my full potential, which gave me a glimpse of possibility when I could only see nothing before. You can hear the original voice memos in there from the day I started writing it with birds singing in the background, which felt so right to keep in since it’s quite a vulnerable song. The idea of ‘pressure points’ felt so strangely accurate to me when I came up with it – it's not like someone is outright saving you, but more that they're just existing in the right places and the right ways, and it's really subtle, but that makes it all the more powerful.”

Sophie Janna – Wide World (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , |

“"Wide World" is a heartwarming Folk song, made to express feelings which come deeply from the soul. The ideal message to send on a person you really love. Lyrics with great meaning, unforgetable singing voice and very artistic clip that you don't want to miss!”

-Nagamag.com

Artist shared with us few words behind this song inspiration:

"'Wide World' is a song I wrote when I wanted to convince someone to stay with me in Amsterdam, instead of go home to the other side of the world. I didn't dare to say "I love you" out loud and neither did he. I wrote the song when he had left and sent it to him. A year later, a few months after the first lockdown, I stranded in France when I couldn't continue my journey to Spain. Because it was already quite late I called my friend Niko whose parents live in Paris. I stayed in Paris for a week and in that week we recorded a few songs together, which I am going to release as an EP this year. 'Wide World' is the first song! Niko and Jakes are a producer duo - forming psych pop band pecq - and have studio in Oxford together called Upcycled Sounds. I was really lucky that they were in Paris at the same time as me! The song features Jakes on synth, organ and harmonies, Niko on field recordings and Niko also mixed the track. The artwork is a print from a lino cut I made of two swans flying above a snowy landscape. The landscape is from where I grew up, the swans symbolize the theme of the song."
