GROUNDATION made waves with the announcement that their new album ONE ROCK will be released May 13, via a partnership between France’s BACO Music and Easy Star Records. Last month, the groundbreaking band, led by vocalist/guitarist Harrison Stafford, unveiled their first single from the upcoming album, “Original Riddim,” featuring guest vocals from the legendary roots harmony groups ISRAEL VIBRATION and THE ABYSSINIANS. This first single, which has already created a great deal of excitement in the band’s fanbase, deals with the universal history of music and its role in sparking the journey of our existence.

Today, Groundation presents “Human Race,” the second release from ONE ROCK. This track crackles with infectious energy, with Stafford singing about love and unification. “If love was the rule, would all this remain the same?” he asks, making a powerful statement in these polarizing times. The result is an instantly memorable song, well balanced between roots reggae and jazz, which has been Groundation’s signature style that has brought so many fans into their music. A corresponding official music video will also be released this week.

Harrison expresses about the song, “I love how this song carries the listener into so many different places; the lyrics coming in just after the blazing intro, the 6/8 section with the sax solo, the string trio arrangement, all while the band is locked into a groove of perpetual forward motion.” He adds, “I am very proud of ‘Human Race’ and what it’s saying lyrically, the song reaches the listener’s heart like an arrow!”

Groundation formed in 1998 when Stafford began a roots reggae/jazz fusion group with bassist Ryan Newman, keyboardist Marcus Urani, and drummer James Stafford, all of whom were in the same Jazz Performance program at Sonoma State University. The group’s first 2 albums (Young Tree and Each One Teach One) established their unique roots sound, while also beginning the band’s long affiliation with foundational reggae artists, as Each One Teach One features vocalist Marcia Higgs and drumming master Ras Michael. Stafford’s deep knowledge of the reggae genre led to him developing a course he taught at Sonoma State called “The History of Reggae Music,” where legends like Joseph Hill of Culture and historical icons like Abba Melchezadek (Haile Selassie’s private secretary) would come to share their personal experiences.

In 1999, while in Jamaica, Harrison met the legendary engineer Jim Fox, who was involved with the production of many of RAS Records’ most iconic releases. Fox remastered both Young Tree and Each One Teach One and recorded Hebron Gate (2002), the album that launched Groundation to international acclaim. Fox has continued working with the band on every subsequent release, helping to shape their sound on We Free Again (2004), Upon The Bridge (2006), Here I Am (2009), and Building An Ark (2012), creating a catalog of genre-bending, deep, progressive roots reggae music. Similarly, Groundation’s artwork had a consistent look and feel, in collaboration with Stafford’s childhood friend, Giovanni Maki, creating all visual designs from the very beginning.

Through the years, Groundation has performed in over 35 countries on 5 continents. The band, which had number of personnel changes over the years, but always built around Harrison Stafford’s leadership, continued to bring reggae into new worlds, with their last studio album, The Next Generation (2018) opening with a full jazz big band (featuring 12 horn players). This album beat out Ziggy Marley and others to win Reggae.fr’s “Best Roots Reggae Album of 2018,” voted on by over 16,000 media members, musicians, producers, and fans. This year, the group will be on tour in support of ONE ROCK. Groundation will be on stage in Europe, notably in France, but also in South America and the United States.

Isabelle Fries – Scrapbook (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , |

“Life is a journey, full of memories and experiences... something authentic and unique for each of us. In "Scrapbook", the artist shares her thoughts and reveals how her past can affect present. All these through soft Lo-fi Pop sound with an epic finale that leaves its sign in most listeners.”

-Nagamag.com

“SCRAPBOOK”, the new single from Isabelle Fries, invites us to not only take a look back at our life adventures, but to also look forward, letting us truly “feel along the way.

“This song for me is about longing for the past and the all encompassing feeling of nostalgia, emotions we almost all surely experience”, says Fries. “Yet at the same time, it’s also about wanting more for your life and knowing that you are capable, even if it means having to fight off the demons in your head, feeling rather than going numb, and that internal battle to get to where you long and belong to be.”

“I wanted to forget, I fell asleep and it’s so cold alone

I want to be someone, I want to reach out and touch love and burn all up

But they say it ain’t easy… “

~ SCRAPBOOK

At the tender age of 23 Isabelle Fries is not only a successful emerging artist, but she is also a teacher. Isabelle is the real life “Hannah Montana,” balancing a career of music along with educator to children in Colorado and Uganda.

Fries is a recent graduate of The University of Southern California whose senior year was impacted by the pandemic. Alas, her altruistic spirit and devotion for music has been going strong. Since her last release, she has been working on projects that merge service and music - not your typical pop star, but refreshing to say the least.

Isabelle has been described by the likes of Perez Hilton and others as a young Kelly Clarkson with a mix of Miley Cyrus and Maggie Rogers. There’s also a distinct Nora Jones “Jazz” influence that echoes through her raspy voice, which is no surprise since she began singing old Jazz songs with her acting coach at the age of 9. Her music is also morphing into a beautiful “Lumineers” sound that grabs your soul.

Along side her LA based music team lead by Grammy-winning, multi-platinum producer/mixer Rob Chiarelli, her latest single “Scrapbook” is a song that invites you to welcome all of life, even the painful memories that have caused so much heartache. Her “Coldplay” type melody on this track shows that she is indeed growing up, and her folksy-pop sound is maturing like a good vintage red wine.

Penned by writer Seth Baer, who’s developed a close musical relationship with Fries, had this to say about the new tune: “Scrapbook is a story of losing someone close to you, and the feeling of falling away from your true self. It’s the feeling of letting go of your past, nostalgia, simpler times, to finally move on with life, quieting the noise around you and battling what’s inside”.

Isabelle’s dream is to combine her love of music and international service work to bring people together and make a difference in the world. She continues to believe that music is a basic human need that allows a connection to self.

Sunflower Thieves – Lichtenberg Figures (Video)

Categories: Rock, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“Discover a mesmerizing vocal duet in their personal Indie Folk creation. Elegant sound decorated with background guitar chords. You can also feel those voices vibrating inside your head and receive a message of strength from its lyrics.”

-Nagamag.com

The Leeds-based dream-folk duo, Sunflower Thieves have shared their latest stunning track, ‘Lichtenberg Figures’. The track is released with a brand new visual featuring the duo.

The new track takes its name from the branch-like scars or patterns which form after either the human body or the ground are struck by lightning. Like their previous two singles from their upcoming EP (‘Sirens’ and ‘I Don’t Know Why’), ‘Lichtenberg Figures’ is a track warmly wrapped in personal experience and authenticity as the duo address finding strength and life-changing experiences from moments of adversity and vulnerability.

Accompanying the release is a new video, directed by Olivia Sofia Ferrara which captures the duo’s close friendship as they are seen performing the track as they playfully spread coloured paint on each other and around a studio in shapes reminiscent of Lichtenberg figures.

Speaking on ‘Lichtenberg Figures’, Sunflower Thieves said, “We were fascinated by Lichtenberg figures because of how they can look beautiful whilst coming from something so intensely dangerous and powerful as lightning. The song is about going through something traumatic and coming out the other side stronger, proving to yourself and others that you’re unbeatable.”
