Phe R.E.D.S makes his return with new single, “Closer,” featuring fellow Seattle artist Catch24. Released today via H1GHR MUSIC, the R&B number captures the push and pull of a budding relationship. Written to mirror a conversation, “Closer” is the mix of emotions that comes with feeling out a crush and deciding where things stand. While Phe R.E.D.S offers the perspective of someone who is cautious and guarded after previous heartbreak and disappointment, Catch24 voices taking that leap of faith. The track is produced by label mate and close collaborator Cha Cha Malone and it is the teaser to a larger Phe R.E.D.S’ project release that’s in the pipeline for later this year.

Leng Phe, who goes by the stage name of Phe R.E.D.S, is a Cambodian-Chinese American music artist. He is signed to H1GHR MUSIC, an unconventional independent record label that focuses on unique talents from Seoul and Seattle. Discovered by founder Jay Park through Seattle’s local hip hop and break dancing scene, Phe R.E.D.S initially got into music because he didn’t see many who looked like him making music. His name, which is a combination of his surname and an acronym for “remember every dream stolen,” pays homage to his family, who were refugees from Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge. It serves as a reminder to discover one’s dreams and live them out for those who didn’t make it, in addition to striving to break generational curses. “I think I’m unique in the sense that I’m Cambodian-Chinese, signed to a Korean label, and pushing my music in America,” he shared. Since his debut with the single, “Smile,” in 2017, Phe R.E.D.S has released a string of records, including “Love On You” (Prod. GRAY), “Your Hands” (Feat. Jay Park) (Prod. GRAY), “Way 2 You” (Prod. Cha Cha Malone), “ Juice” (Feat. Hoody) (Prod. Mokyo) and “Senseless” (Feat. pH-1) (Prod. WOOGIE). After contributing to H1GHR MUSIC’s critically acclaimed label compilation album, [H1GHR : BLUE TAPE], with his single, “Swing My Way,” Phe R.E.D.S has taken time off during Covid to focus on personal wellness. In between spending time with family and friends, he has been pursuing his other lifelong dream, pilot training. Invigorated, he said “Closer” makes for a strong return. “It’s like I’ve lived a little bit of life and I can take this experience and put it into a sonic medium for people to listen to,” Phe R.E.D.S said. The single marks a new chapter and leads up to a larger project, to be released later this year. Stay tuned for more news from Phe R.E.D.S.

“Take your time to relax with "Jonah White" and his high level vocal capabilities. The artist shares some inner thoughts with his audience, via deeply meaningful lyrics and sophisticated Indie R&B sound. Real pleasure from a rising talent in the scene.”

-Nagamag.com

Artist said about this song:

"I wrote this song about my rejection of casual sex culture and the insecurities and fears I've struggled with when dating as someone who places a lot of meaning on sex. I'd rather be alone and wait for someone who truly loves me then be used to warm someone's bed in short!"

HOAX – soju (Video)

Categories: Features, Pop, Pop Features, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , , |

“”Soju” is a heartwarming Indie Pop single, which underlines an important truth; we should absorb every single moment se spend with people we love, because life won’t last forever. Wise message, expressed in a very artistic way.”

-Nagamag.com

Indie pop / rock band HOAX released “soju”, the ninth and final single off the band’s narrative-driven debut concept album, b?, a 17-track project detailing the inner workings of being vs. doing.

“soju”

On the surface, “soju” might be best described to have an upbeat pop-centric sound, but the song itself is about dealing with death and reflecting on the notion that life sometimes feels like random moments in time that are out of your control. For most people, they wouldn’t know that Mike Raj wrote “soju” from the perspective of his late grandfather and that 2021 was the year of loss for him.

The first verse and chorus of “soju” was written about the aftermath of loss and grief. We tend to feel completely helpless and achingly wish for one more moment with our loved ones, as we are overwhelmed by the struggle to go on through life feeling like the meaning is lost. Most of the lyrics in the first verse and chorus are reflections on how hopeless life feels when you lose someone, and how much the sky feels like it is falling in the wake of their death. Simply put, life becomes monochromatic.

The second half of the second verse is all about that idea to not lose love when you have lost a loved one, and rather to use the pain you experienced that has undoubtedly changed you – to love even deeper. Pain is more relatable to people than success; than happiness; than anything else we often experience. Our lives more often than not are our symbols of pain that we have synthesized through our coping methods into how we then choose to perceive the world. At its worst, we let it consume us and we create insecurities that eat us alive. At its best, our pain becomes lessons of growth and empathy that we can use to understand why it is so goddamn hard for all of us to be alive and human.

The takeaway message of the song? Make sure you find someone that you can give your all to, and then love them in your every waking moment – until their final breath. That’s what the bridge of “soju” is all about. How often can we regret the time we no longer have with someone who is gone? Savor every moment you get with someone who loves you, exist with them, and be with them. And though Mike hopes that none of you will ever have to go on living without someone you love, knowing you were truly with them – and they were with you – is enough.

Debut Album: b?

HOAX’s debut album, b?, is a concept album that follows the narratives of characters that are thrown together in the aftermath of tragedy. Each song is written from the point of view of a character who explores the abstract concepts of the essence of “BEING” – an evident obsession of both the characters in the story and the band members themselves. The dichotomy of BEING vs. DOING is highlighted through careful lyricism on the album. Visit hoax-band.com for HOAX’s supplementary album content for their debut album, b?

QUOTE

“2021 was one of the toughest years of my life. It’s probably just confirmation bias, but death came to me in threes. I lost my grandmother, my dog (Luna), and then my grandfather. I wanted to express the grief I felt, but through the lens of my grandfather and all the pain he endured before his time finally came. The instrumental for ‘soju’ was written back in 2019, but all the lyrics I would write for it held no weight. It was only now after this year of loss did the words come to finally give me peace with it.” -Michael Raj

“Immerse yourself in the deep vocals of "She don't" in almost three minutes of smoothly mixed Indie R&B sound. When night falls after a busy day, we usually accept music of slow pace and soft flow. This is the case here.”

This song is about dealing with being done with someone and others who are always talking but their actions never match up with their words. Finally you take control of the situation and let the other person know it's either all or nothing.

Erika Tham – Shhh (Video)

Categories: Pop, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“Erika Tham raises the temperature with her seductive and super hot vibe, which can leave you speechless. Attractive voice, decorated with some light percussion elements and highly artistic clip that exceeds our expectations.”

LA-based pop/R&B singer-songwriter and actress Erika Tham makes a fiery entrance this year with new single “Shhh” and premieres the coinciding Patrick Wilcox-directed video today. Co-written with GRAMMY-nominated producers Deion Gill (Kelly Rowland, Miguel, Playboi Carti, Usher) and Major Myjah (Chris Brown, J.Cole, Ty Dolla $ign), the tongue-in-cheek track demonstrates Erika’s lyrical wit and seductive flow as she puts every mansplaining fuckboy firmly in their place. Paying homage to the unapologetic female pop stars of the ‘90s, “Shhh” is a loose spin off Shania Twain’s 1997 megahit “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and laced with alluring Asian string instrumentation against a modern R&B production.

“‘Shhh’ came together off the back of a joke made during a writing session. I remember talking to Deion Gill and Major Myjah, and I said ‘you know when someone’s cute, until they open their mouth and ruin it?’” Erika Tham explains, “It’s a fun, feminine, and coquettish song that was equally as fun to make. When it came to writing the verses, I wanted to pay homage to the sassy, unapologetic pop stars of the ‘90s. The line ‘your daddy’s black card don’t impress me much’ was inspired by Shania Twain’s iconic ‘Don’t Impress Me Much’ but with a twist and subject matter that felt authentic and relatable to my real life and so many other women. The rest of the song is honestly just the result of three friends talking shit and gassing each other up.” On the video, she adds, “Patrick and I juxtaposed the fantasy and glamour of cabaret with somewhat of a horror backdrop. We felt the contrast fit the mood and mysterious energy of the song.”

Toronto singer/songwriter/producer Chris Grey is “Back Again” with his new fiery single. Following up his viral song, Seamless, Grey unleashes his intensity and mixes it with a rare capacity for personal insight as the lyrics and production take the listener through an anxiety attack in real time. When describing the song Grey stated “Lyrically, the song is a play by play of losing control as all of your tamed demons come back again and production-wise there is a pulsing heart beat that threads through the track.” There is something to be said about the ease in which Chris Grey moves across the world of music, easily flexing his talents in songwriting, producing, and singing. Grey takes this musical dexterity to new heights as Back Again opens with a distorted Yeezus inspired intro, with a heartbeat that builds, and layered vocals that switch seamlessly between smooth and stirring in the verses and an edgy breathlessness in the chorus. Back Again will leave your heart pounding.
