Continuing a run of graceful and deeply emotive singles, London based singer/songwriter OLI releaseS ‘Cry’. followed by a video by Gabrielle Salonga and Heini Sussane. Salonga has also created the surreal new visuals, artwork and photos for OLI’s current releases.
Beginning with OLI’s irresistible vocals and gently crescendoing synths, ‘Cry’ implores the therapeutic benefits of crying to help make sense of our problems. “I specifically wanted ‘Cry’ to focus on that numb feeling, when you’re unable to even process your emotions and let them go.” OLI explains, “The constant back and forth of knowing something isn’t right inside but wanting to keep going and not seem weak. I’ve always felt crying in general is underappreciated.”
As the song builds, we hear and feel the sense of relief and release that crying provides. OLI says: “The second half of the song is describing how good you feel after. How things really can become clearer in your head if you allow yourself to let it out and stop judging yourself for it.”
OLI’s world of lush, ethereal soundscapes; expansive and inspired visual perspectives, and ingenious, non-conformist alt-pop songwriting has earnt her critical acclaim as well as some extensive support on streaming services. Her last single ‘Don’t Give Up’ saw her gaining ground around the world, including a top 5 placement in the Taiwanese alternative chart.
OLI always knew she was going to be an artist. She moved to London from New Jersey aged 2, and her exceptionally musical family always encouraged her to be creative. “Whenever I would complain about being bored as a child, my mum would tell me to go and create something – so me and my sister would come up with songs and little shows.” She recalls writing her first song at just 7 years old, and grew up in a household filled with music, soaking up influences as diverse as Sade and Dion Warwick to bands like Stereophonics, Supergrass, Razorlight, as well as Pearl Jam and Pink Floyd. With such a contrasting collection of music to grow up on, it’s easy to see why her own sound is so idiosyncratic.
‘Cry’, like all of OLI’s output to date, is co-written and produced by legendary producer Benny D (Stormzy, Boy George, Kylie, Plan B, Robbie Williams, Paloma Faith, Depeche Mode). Benny has also helped to facilitate OLI’s forthcoming collaboration with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, due for release in January. More details will be announced soon.

Oan Kim – Mambo (Video)
“Exclusively made for the most selective listeners, this Jazz juwel is going to add one more missing piece in your musical puzzle. Elusive sound elements mixed with dominating saxophone and a sample of passionate vocals. This is the recipe for artistic success!”

TAKEN FROM THE UPCOMING ALBUM ‘OAN KIM & THE DIRTY JAZZ’
Mambo is the latest single from Oan Kim’s upcoming album ‘Oan Kim & the Dirty Jazz’. Inspired by the likes of Archie Shepp and Charles Lloyd, Oan’s inimitable jazz saxophone style is neatly entwined in this mysterious and minimal track.

The single follows on from the first release of the album Wong Kar Why, which features French musician Edward Perraud. The album was produced by Oan himself in his home studio in Paris, with Oan playing saxophone and guitar throughout. On Mambo, he explains ‘as with most of this album I wanted to mix different genres. It all started with the guitar and bass line alla Nick Cave or Timber Timbre. This bass line really sets a particular mood of subdued tension, that I wanted to do a jazz saxophone track on.’
Also singing on the track, Oan added ‘the lyrics describe a compulsive liar enjoying the joy and laughter that his lies provoke’.
‘I called it Mambo because it reminds me of music from the Mambo era and I liked the connotations, but it’s clearly not a mambo per se’.
Oan’s compelling sound palette follows from studies at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Bill Evans Piano Academy, whilst also being fascinated by contemporary music and the indie scene in which he played for a number of years with electro-rock duo Chinese Army and rock band Film Noir.
Bringing together his musical and artistic influences into a melting pot of creativity, Oan’s passion for music and filmmaking is evident with the mesmerizing music video for Mambo. Featuring two contemporary dancers, the video showcases the ‘dynamics of seduction within a dance number’.
Inspired by a mix of Pina Bausch and Fred Astaire, the video aims to show ‘where a couple is gaging each other, getting closer, pushing back, pulling closer, embracing, controlling the other, or falling into each other’s arms’, whilst also keeping the urban settings of dance similar to in the film Pina by Wim Wenders.
The dance is based on these ‘push/pull dynamics’, borrowing elements of ballroom dancing that match the retro elements of the music.
Mambo, the second single from the upcoming album ‘Oan Kim & The Dirty Jazz’, is available now on all major platforms.

Leila Milki – Fall Asleep (Video)
“”Leila Milki” has combined her deep sensual voice with Neoclassic instrumentation, creating a romantic sense to her listeners. The concept in “Fall Asleep” is full of mystery… it feeds your imagination and calls you to explore its Cinematic character.”
-Nagamag.com
“Fall Asleep” plays out like an orchestral dreamscape, a hazy lullaby…exploring femininity and vulnerability in the face of abuse and peace-keeping. It showcases my vocal & classical-piano performance, along with an unfurling string quartet. It’s meditative, romantic, and mysterious, with dark-meets-light and Arab-fusion influences.
This brand new music video was a remote collaboration from Los Angeles to Toronto, capturing the dance between the familiar, and the pull towards something greater. It’s a terrifying limbo, but all the more worthwhile: daring to indulge those glimmers of freedom beyond our daydreams, when we’ve been taught to place the world’s comfort over our own.
Through this cinematic ballad, my hope is to champion visibility for fellow first-generation daughters of immigrants whose dual-identity limbo often intensifies our experience of early adulthood.
