Zenon Marko – Ascent 4 (Video)

“Zenon Marko with his new ambient atmospheric vision Ascent 4 invites to explore the elements of earth and beyond. Lush harmonies and gentle keys, arranged with care on sound design, engaging an emotional trip and appreciation for the universe which we are a part.”

-Nagamag.com

From the full-length symmetrical concept album “Symmetry”

“Ascent 4” is the final ascent of the Symmetry concept album. Symmetry is the musically symmetrical soundtrack of a journey, whether physical, intellectual, imaginative, emotional, philosophical, psychological, or spiritual. The music expresses progressive ascent towards a goal, arrival at an apex, descent, and return. Each piece corresponds to one of the shapes of ancient geometry representing the elements: earth, water, fire, air, aether. “Ascent 4” is about the element of air.

The structure of the composition reflects and embodies philosophy, mathematics, sacred geometry, harmony and dissonance, and psychoacoustics. This electronic arrangement of the composition is inspired by early, baroque, classical and neoclassical music, as well as electronic music and minimalism. The entire album is musically symmetrical, with the “Descents” as compositional reverses of the “Ascents”.

The challenge was to create a timeless meditative album, depicting a wide range of moods from tranquil to intense, within strict limits: all pieces share the same tempo, arrangement, duration, and internal structure. Themes repeat, vary, evolve, develop throughout. The Ascent/Descent pairs required the creation of sounds, chord progressions, and melodies that worked equally well forward or in reverse. Each successive “Ascent” modulates to a “higher” musical key and greater harmonic and melodic ascending movement. “Esse” (Latin: “to be”), the centerpiece and apex, itself internally symmetrical, is music of complete stasis, an arrival at the destination, a pure contemplation of a panoramic vista, perhaps even a state of enlightenment or mystical rapture. Each “Descent” mirrors its numerically equivalent “Ascent”, successively descending in chord progressions and in musical keys. One source of inspiration for this work is the ascent to knowledge as described in Plato’s allegory of the Cave; another is the meditative process and the ascent to the enlightened state of consciousness, known as “The Fourth” (Turiya), in Indian philosophy.

The hope is that listeners find this music to be an evocative soundtrack to their own journeys, and that they may create their own interpretations.

Mightelle – Wrurf (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , , |

“A new entry on electro – pop genre is coming from the Scandinavic north to portray a more inner version of such a popular music listening of our times, blowing a fresh breeze as autumn gradually setting in.

-Nagamag.com

WRURF is an experimental synthpop track built on neatly designed kicks, synthesizers, and vocal manipulations. The track opens with a flirting game between the kick and synth before Mightelle’s deep and soft voice carefully leads the listener towards a hectic, percussive, and redemptive chorus.

“WRURF is about confidently leaving a situation - especially when no one is sad to see you go. The track is inspired by a former relationship. I was SO confused. He said one thing and did something else and I completely lost myself. It sounds cliche, but along the lines, it dawned on me that is was an ‘actions speak louder than words’ kinda thing.”

Mightelle is the danish producer, singer and songwriter, Mai Skjødt. With contrasting electronic productions, heartfelt lyrics and forceful beats whirled in loads of synths, she lures you into a thoughtful sensitivity and shines a light where anger, doubt and love intertwine in the obscure nooks and knots of our thoughts. Partly rooted in synth-pop and partly in a fantasy world where everything is possible, she creates songs that challenge the usual genres and that have so many edges that you might as well give up counting them.

She draws inspiration from artists such as FKA Twigs, Lorde, Sevdaliza but mostly from her diary, dreams and nightmares.

“Despite all the hardships of this year, Travis Shallow came back early this summer with a masterfully performed guitar ballad and his characteristic warm voice to take us on an introvert travel in the magnificent sounds of rock ‘en roll”

-Nagamag.com

Take one listen to North Carolina native, Travis Shallow’s work and it is no wonder that he has amassed fans from his opening spots with legendary Gregg Allman, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, The Marcus King Band, Jerry Joseph, Todd Snider, and fellow native North Carolina band, American Aquarium.

Travis Shallow is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and recording artist.

Shallow started his career as a solo artist in 2002 playing every dive bar and club that would book him. He quickly developed a loyal following which allowed him to further explore the thriving North Carolina music scene. Soon after, he formed the alternative country band, A Few Good Liars, with whom he recorded a studio album in 2011 titled, Battered Wooden Body, at Tweed Recording Studio in Oxford, MS.

In 2012, Shallow left A Few Good Liars and started writing and recording songs that would later be released as his first solo self-titled album, Travis Shallow, to regional critical acclaim in the southeastern United States.

Shallow went back to Tweed Recording Studio with Andrew Ratcliffe engineering to record his solo debut album. This solo album was acoustically driven with an accompanying band to highlight the songwriting and lyrical prowess.

After the release of his self-titled album in March 2016, Shallow took the show to the people performing intimate shows, stripped down with him and an acoustic guitar. While doing so, Shallow wrote a new batch of songs that was miles away from another solo acoustic album and set out to put together a backing band for the studio sessions. He reached out to longtime friends and trusted heavy hitters whose familiar chemistry quickly turned into his full-time road band, The Deep End. The result was clear and titled- The Great Divide.

The Great Divide was featured in Relix Magazine and the single “River That Sings” made it’s radio debut on the Americana Charts.

Shallow has now stripped down the musician line up and returned back to his acoustic roots. He often plays with Bob Russell accompanying on guitar and (before the pandemic) playing intimate seated listening rooms where the song itself is king. “Let It Pass” is out now on Cavity Search Records and a studio album is scheduled for release in the fall.

Stephen Caulfield Interview on Nagamag

Categories: Ambient Features, Ambient Interviews, Features, Interviews, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Nagamag:
What are the genres that describe better your music style?

Stephen Caulfield:
Ambient, Contemporary Classical, Neo-classical, Dark Ambient, Space Music

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Stephen Caulfield:
I am a musician and composer that has been making music for a long as I can remember. I grew up in a a pretty large musical family with what felt like music all around me. However I've always preferred writing and working on my own and following my own passions. I was always looking for anything I could lay my hands on that made some kind of interesting music or noise which meant that I never became too locked into any particular music style or genre, something that is still reflected in the music that I listen to. Essentially I love music that moves me emotionally in some way whether I am the one making it or not. Over the years I have released 5 albums and worked on 3 film soundtracks.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Stephen Caulfield:
Growing up I remember hearing artists like Queen, ABBA, The Beatles, Blondie and Pink Floyd all through my childhood, in fact sometimes it feels like I have them written into my DNA. This gave me a real appreciation for the power of music to move people emotionally and unite them in a shared experience. It also taught me to follow my own path, success is amazing if it happens, but staying true to your artistic vision will give you creative satisfaction and fulfilment.

Nagamag:
How did your new album come about?

Stephen Caulfield:
My new album, ‘Circuits’ kind of took me by surprise, I wasn't planning on making it and all of a sudden, there it was. I had been working on music for a number of different projects and when I put them together I realised that they worked well together and formed a cohesive album that I really like. On the album I have continued to explore ambient and piano led composition, but I have also introduced some stronger orchestral elements too which I think provide some nice dynamic range over the course of the 15 tracks. As well as the music on Circuits, I have made videos for each track on the album using a series photographs of light manipulations I made that I then animated.

Nagamag:
Most artists have a favorite song from a different music genre than the one they are producing music for... Which is yours?

Stephen Caulfield:
The Japanese House "Chewing Cotton Wool"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which track from a similar artist you admire?

Stephen Caulfield:
Jóhann Jóhannsson "Flight From The City"

Louie Louie! – All Fall Down (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Pop, The Latest|Tags: , , |

“Well this is pretty much layered but guess what? Brilliant mixed and still manages a clarity that other more minimal pop songs missing. Beside this, Do you want to go to a party? Just say it, or better join the happy party vibes of ALL FALL DOWN by Louie Louie!”

-Nagamag.com

Louie Louie!, the new project of former HOLYCHILD member Louie Diller, is bringing back all the charm of anthemic, 2000's pop-rock jams. Louie brings us soaring highs in his new single "All Fall Down".

The former HOLYCHILD star saw international success for their brat-pop sound and dance-like-nobody's watching attitude. With praise from the likes of NYLON, NME, Billboard, LA Mag and several others, HOLYCHILD was viral. However, Diller has spent the past few years finding his solo voice and perfecting his sound. Louie Louie! has evolved into that project - an honest reflection of the trials and tribulations he's experienced in the last 4 years.

Life sure has a way of humbling you and Diller is no stranger to that. "In 2016 I went from making half a million dollars to food stamps after a whole lot of financial mismanagement, classic music biz shit show and some," he shares. "That same year I also had my heartbroken by a girl, who I thought I was going to marry, and found myself living next door to the Mexican mafia in east LA, who were hustling me every other day. That same year my dad came down with cancer and though he thankfully beat that shit, for most of 2016 it wasn't clear if he'd survive. And then Trump got elected. Out of all this, Louie Louie! was born."

Diller began writing his debut album, Heartbreak In the Fall Of The Empire, which is about falling in-and-out of love while society crumbles around him. "All Fall Down" is the first song from the album and a spilling out of all his misery.

"All Fall Down" revels in all of its pop-rock glory with a sing-along chorus and the infectious energy of a rambunctious crowd cheering. This optimistic anthem couldn't come at a better time. In the midst of a global pandemic and social justice movement, we are challenged to be the best versions of ourselves as 2020 continues to knock us down. Louie poses the question, "When we all fall down, will we turn it into something?"

Louie flips the narrative we've come to know as 2020 and urges us to turn those lemons into lemonade.

On the single he shares, "The chorus of this song is as much a question to myself as everyone else asking, 'when we all fall down, will we turn it into something?' It was inspired by heartbreak in a decaying society."
