There’s no shortage of legendary stories about songwriting duos: Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, King and Goffin…the list is immense, and each has their own quirks and twists. As the world entered a global pandemic in 2020, a songwriting partnership for a new era began to emerge: Kerenyi/Spears, an artistry partnership between songwriter Justin Kerenyi and producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer Deke Spears.

The duo first teamed up in 2017 when Deke produced Justin’s first solo album, Silent Stars. Kerenyi, a lawyer by trade, always had an affinity for songwriting and had played in an Atlanta area band for nearly a decade. To make his lifelong dream of recording an album a reality, he turned to Deke. The two had previously met through work with the Songs for Kids Foundation, a music mentorship and interactive program organization for kids and young adults with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities.

Deke, an accomplished musician and producer in his own right, had spent nearly a decade performing and recording with the buzz-worthy Atlanta band, Quiet Hounds, when he relocated to a farm in Athens, GA in 2019. There, he began to construct his own studio, Magnetic Recording, from the ground up.

Having bonded over a shared affinity for well-curated music, as the pandemic became a reality, their friendship took on a new flavor. Justin approached Deke with an album concept in 2020 – bringing his songs to life through a variety of Atlanta-based artists and vocalists for a collaborative project.

In this virtual world, the duo worked together by video and email for about a year before having the opportunity to safely collaborate in person. The pair connected over very organic, wholesome aesthetics with inspirations ranging from classic ‘70s artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Jackson Browne; Bob Dylan; and The Beatles, to more modern artists that include Dawes, Ray LaMontagne, Tom Petty, and Elliott Smith. They also share a common interest in philosophical teachings of Buddhism, Eckart Tolle, and meditation, leading to songs that reflect themes of love and loss, mindfulness, and relinquishing ego.

Deke recorded vocals as a reference guide to inform the melodies and articulation of the arrangements. But soon, both found that those reference guides had a magic of their own and Justin encouraged Deke to keep his voice on the project. To fill in the gaps, Justin and Deke assembled an amazing cast of local Atlanta and Athens musicians to round out the sound … and soon, a unique collection of songs was

Kate Ellis – The Story You’ve Been Told (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Rock, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“its touching and delicate as feathers from the sweetest of birds. The lyrics are deep and have a natural flow to them. A track for ones who seek to be more and to make it through. Its energy is divine, and the artist involved in the instrumental execution are very skilled all around. ”

-Nagamag.com

The Story You've Been Told is the closing track from Kate Ellis' sophomore album ‘Spirals’ produced by John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Indigo Girls). The song encapsulates the album’s theme of how we go around in circles inside our heads getting lost in the maze of obstacles and pain we encounter in life – but it’s about getting out of these spirals of thought to a more peaceful place.

In Kate's words about this song: "We carry around stories about who we are, where we come from, what happened to us, and what it means. But it creates a false system of beliefs. The Story You’ve Been Told is about finding your way out of these thoughts that can possess you and memories and feelings that can trap you by realizing that the stories aren't true and can be discarded. Once we stop seeing our lives through a distorted prism, we are fine."

Ro’s releases have garnered support from tastemakers such as Harriet Rose and James Threlfall (BBC) and outlets such as Hoxton Radio and Visual Atelier 8. 2021 also saw her working with prolific UK songwriters, Fred Again.. and Kamille after being recognised as an up-and-coming producer (She Is The Music, Promised Land Music, Universal Music). In August 2020, my solo album «You, Me & Everything Else» was released. This was an important first step towards musical independence after the Lovebugs had decided to indefinitely put their activities on hold two years earlier. My goal was to avoid the familiar, to explore my stylistic range and attempt unexpected collaborations. A risk that was rewarded. The album was well received by critics and fans alike and even made it into the top 10 of the official Swiss charts.

I would have loved to perform the new material on stage. However, when it became apparent that the pandemic would thwart these plans, I continued working on songs instead and started looking for the right kind of producer. When musician and sound designer Grégoire Pasquier (Shuttle) from Fribourg heard the demo recordings for the first time, it was ‘love at first synthesizer’, so to speak. Sound files and digital sketches were sent back and forth, and soon the first song resulted from this intimate, long-distance partnership: «It’s Serious», released at the end of 2021 and instantly chosen by SRF3 as their ‘Song of the Day’.

While the lockdown shook the foundation of my private life, writing new songs gave me stability. Undeterred I continued to play with my tunes and released four more singles in the first half of 2021: «Slave to the Algorithm, «Over My Head», «Luv U» and «Speakeasy». All these were published on my very own label «Some of My Best Friends Are Songs», and indeed they felt like best friends in the lonely everyday life of the pandemic. As a response to the isolation, Grégoires sound design became more and more open and epic the deeper he dove into it. Carried by analogue drum machines and other electronic equipment from the early 1980s, the new songs found its way to the ears and hearts of fans, blogs and radios alike.

Inspired by the positive feedback and the prospect of performing my favorite songs in a one-off concert in 2022 on the occasion of my 50th birthday, it soon became clear that my journey shouldn’t stop with these five songs. The singles «Were We Every So Young?» and «When We Were Friends», the sensitive «Alphabet of Love», the pulsating title track and three other ‘best friends’ now complete the album, which will be released on April 22 under the title «Unglued». An album that came together while everything else came unglued.

Simon Field x Adam Griffin x James Hurr – You On Red (Feat. Aya Anne) (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, House, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“The beat shakes your body and those sensual vocals can set you on fire. When four artistic minds work together, the result cannot be indifferent at all. Maximize the volume and let this EDM banger do its job in the most effective way!”

-Nagamag.com

Producer extraordinaries, Simon Field, Adam Griffin and James Hurr have dropped the immense sounding ‘You In Red (feat. Aya Anne)’ on London’s hit-machine, Perfect Havoc. A disco-tinged deep house tune with rolling bassline, it brings together each producer’s unique touch: the analogue sound from Field’s studio, the contagious rhythms of Griffin, and Hurr as a master at work. Stream it now https://PerfectHavoc.lnk.to/youonred.

Simon Field is an awarded producer and songwriter based in Oslo, Norway with a distinct sound produced entirely through analogue gear. His releases on Perfect Havoc include ‘Is It Real?’ with Tobtok & Oliver Nelson feat. Salena Mastronnani (8 million streams), ‘Shake The Tree’ (18 million streams), and ‘Wildfire’ feat. Andreya Triana (3.6 million streams).

Champions of Field’s sound span DJ A-listers Tiësto, Hardwell, David Guetta, and Benny Benassi, while over on the Big Screen and TV, his music has been featured in the Academy Award nominated film, Passengers, and in the Netflix series Elite. With 80 million global streams to his name and the curator behind the Ibiza Deep House playlist on Spotify with over 500,000 fans, Field is a constant force in creating original and modern sounds.

Producing alongside Field is Perfect Havoc co-founder and producer, Adam Griffin. Alongside Robert Davies, Griffin has steered Perfect Havoc into one of the most in-demand independent labels around, underlined by platinum certified releases and generating over three billion global streams. His contagious house cuts include ‘The Sting’ and ‘The Stand Off’ (BBC Radio 1 Future Anthem) and ‘Don’t Over Think It’ produced with house icon Todd Terry.

Also on the lineup here is rising superstar James Hurr. His credits as a production and mixing engineer are an impressive ‘who’s who’ of the UK’s best-known dance talents. Hurr is behind Mark Knight’s ‘Yebisah’ and Prok & Fitch’s ‘Wow’, plus dozens of tracks, collabs and remixes with Michael Gray and Frederick & Kusse to name just two. Toolroom Record’s Mark Knight said that Hurr “was on fire” and the man wasn’t wrong. Hurr’s Perfect Havoc debut ‘Jump In’ with legendary DJ Michael Gray was so well received that it was played for 8 straight weeks on BBC Radio 1’s Party Anthems.

The sumptuous vocals on ‘You On Red’ come courtesy of Aya Anne. Signed to Perfect Havoc Management, the 22-year-old from West Sussex first appeared on the label as a feature with Pink Panda on ‘Only Love’. Her song writing skills take ‘You In Red’ down the narrative of leaving your lover on the dancefloor both literally and figuratively. Together with production of Field, Griffin and Hurr, Aya Anne gives the track an emotive and refined quality to get truly lost in.

There’s an extra level of creativity in the output of Perfect Havoc seen so far this year from its trademark crossover dance sounds to tech house and afrobeat house. Having given rise to six UK Top 20 singles including the No.1 single ‘Head & Heart’ by four-time Brit Award nominated producer Joel Corry and MNEK, the question begs: where will the label head next?

With a talent-packed schedule for 2022 that also features releases from Just Kiddin, PS1, Wankelmut, Tobtok and Freejak, Perfect Havoc is guaranteed to serve up a ton of new accessible and underground house sounds from both breaking and established talent.

This song has to do with being unsettled. It's about knowing wherever a person goes, they're thinking of someplace farther along. It's also about living with another who knows this and wants the feeling to cease. It touches on the conflict that situation creates when one party hopes toward the impossible cause of changing someone other than themselves.

Angel Sánchez Enríquez x Athens Philharmonia Orchestra – À Laura, Op. 1: II. La mer et les étoiles (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Neoclassical, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

“If music had a soul, it would be enclosed in this classical composition. Its sound flies like a free bird in the clear sky. Deep sound of symphonic instruments for your favourite playlist.”

“Если у музыки есть душа, то она заключена в этой классической композиции и словно огненная птица вырвалась на свободу, чтобы порадовать нас. Глубочайшее благоговение, настоящее наследие симфонической классики в вашем плейлисте.”

Navona Records proudly presents PRISMA VOL. 4, the fourth installment in the acclaimed PRISMA series showcasing the best of American contemporary composition.

Brian Belet's three-movement string orchestra work Stellar Nebulae starts off the album. The multi-layered I. Emergence is aptly contrasted with the calm II. Contemplation, before culminating in the animated finale of III. Expansion. The structure is classical, the tonal language modern, but with influences reminiscent of Baroque concertos. Mara Gibson strives to paint an impression of a small island's ecology in Secret Sky. Completely novel and original in its concept, this work is based on the migratory patterns of birds on Beaver Island MI. A similarly nature-themed inspiration is the background of Rain Worthington's Shadows of the Wind. It graphically evokes the changing silhouettes of leaves and branches cast on walls during a storm, mirroring the workings of the human subconscious.

Next up is Angel Sanchez' symphonic poem À Laura, a three-movement dedication to a beloved woman. I. La petite Princesse is a feisty characterisation of the heroine, II. La mer et les étoiles aptly portrays the beauty of the dedicatee's beloved sea and stars, while III. Feu is an uninhibited declaration of passion. There is an air of martiality to Adrienne Albert's Courage for Winds, its beginning centered around a recurring snare drum beat. Commissioned by the Inland Empire Youth Wind Symphony Commissioning Consortium, it reflects the battle against adversity in a tonal language that is decidedly American. John Franek's Mithridates epically closes the album with a punch of Dvořákian opulence: its unbridled energy remains profoundly reminiscent of the highly dramatic Slavic musical tradition of the late 19th Century.

PRISMA VOL. 4 seamlessly takes up on the quality listeners have come to expect from this series. In its diversity, this apposite cross section has something to satisfy not only every mood, but also every taste.

Faybl – Island (Spotify)

“Every time you find yourself in the middle of a storm, music will be your rescue island. Bright, energetic, alive and kicking creation from the experienced "Faybl". Keep your mood high with this EDM dynamic sound and its supportive lyrics too.”

-Nagamag.com

American startup duo Faybl's newest release - "Island," will take you back to the cathartic, high-energy dance anthems of the early 2010s in the best way possible. The duo's signature sound is on stunning display with the new track, which opens with soulful vocals belting out heartfelt lyrics like "even if it hurts, even if the tides turn violent, I will be your island." Faybl slowly build into a goosebump-inducing drop full of big room energy and soaring melodies that make this gem into a tearjerker on the festival stage. Whether you're a newbie to the scene or a tried and true veteran, this track about offering support to each other during hard times is sure to ignite your emotions and your dancing shoes. Read on for the artists' inspiration behind the track:

"In a time when many people in our lives and around the world are facing a lot of adversity, we feel it's more important than ever to emphasize being there to build up and support your friends and loved ones. Much of our current culture is so focused on showing what we have and trying to present the best versions of ourselves that we can often neglect building sound support systems and making sure we participate in supporting those we care about. We wanted to create a house tune with influences from artists like Illenium and Seven Lions to create an emotional yet powerful and fresh take on progressive house and festival culture. We hope this song will inspire people to reach out to their friends and family and remind them how much they appreciate them. Life is short, and we often take the life and people we have while trying to chase something else for granted. We first played this song at the end of our set at Red Rocks opening for Illenium, which is a venue that we had been dreaming of playing from the moment we started making music. With the incredible crowd response, we decided that it should be the song to kick off 2022 with this new sound."

Faybl is a US-based duo out of Denver, Colorado, already making waves with fans and industry tastemakers alike. "Island" is their 7th release ever, with their most popular single to date being "Love Runs Cold." This past summer, they opened for Illenium at the storied Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, where they played "Island" live for the first time. Faybl's journey has just begun, so ride along on their adventure by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
